Transparent colour not transparent

ok.. I'm making a little program i C# (C Sharp) and I've got several images that change layered over each other.. but only the top-most image displays, because the so-called 'transparent' colour in the colour list is not actually transparent. if i can't get this working, i can't make the program, either that, or I'm restricted to 2 sort of layers.. background image and image.. and i need at least 3

C# is kinda beyond me but for anyone to help we will need more information can you provide it.

ok.. i have 3 pictureboxes on top of each other, they each display and image which changes when certain things happen, but only the image in the picturebox on the top actually displays, because the background is not transparent. its not an image problem, its that the background colour of the picture box is an actual colour, not transparent as i need it to be so i can see all 3 images
