RMRK in trouble?

What is going on in RMRK that established members are now jumping ship? Here are some problems that I see:

1) Too few members.

There just aren't enough members to keep the forum alive. It's the same few members in the General forum and it gets old.

2) Too many mods, too few rules.

The number of mods here is wildly disproportionate to the number and activity of the users here, and they are given free reign to lock, unlock, move, and delete anything they like. Second-guessing is common and the only real rule on RMRK is "Be a suck-up". This leads to problem #3:

3) Sycophants and groupthink.

Almost everyone here is sucking up to someone else, and dissent is treated harshly. A handful of people sit at the top of the heap and decides everyone's opinions of things. A good example of this is how HaloOfTheSun worked to ostracize SexualBubblegum by constantly remarking on how unfunny SBG had become; other members quickly picked up on this change in policy and cast SBG out of the community.

4) Isn't this forum about RPG maker?

This forum is supposed to be about the RPG maker program, but lmost no one seems to care about this aspect of the forum. Some mods have admitted that the forum has drifted and now has no real purpose. Attempts to revitalize the forum by including new features and new subforums have failed because there aren't enough people to use them. There are better alternative forums out there for all the non-RPG stuff but the mods are reluctant to eliminate all the extra forums and give up control over their cliques. These silent forums are just so much dead weight which is slowly dragging the site down.

THe easiest way to be known is to post in spam.

If you help people, like Nouman, or are talented, such as Yossy was, then you could become known that way.
Old members are simply leaving now because some of us/them arent as entertained by the boards as we were even a month ago.

I disagree with the first part. Crankeye.org was wildly successful and had very few members, and there have been times when these forums were kept active by just one or two people(Blizzard, mostly).

However, I do agree with the second part. We have too many mods that just don't do anything. I try to do my job but I goof around just as much as I do help, and I'm too busy with work and my personal life to do as much as I once did. We have alot of mods that don't really do anything at all.

I never really noticed anything like your third point. I've always been independant had my own opinion. I've always spoke up about how I feel about things around here. I've gained my status here for just being me. I never sucked up to anyone, though I suppose there are people who have.

As for RPG maker, all the sections for it are still there, and have even been improved upon. I don't see anything wrong with expanding the forums to encorporate Game Maker as well as a more social aspect(which is what most of the more prominent members are here for anyways). It's the recent and constant complaining and no one doing anything to try to fix the so called problems that has lead to this feeling of discontent.

Perhaps you just have no idea what you're talking about, which is most likely I'm guessing. This forum has 37 or 38 boards, that's a lot to watch over, especially with so many members. And we aren't going to read every single topic, hence the large number.

3) Sycophants and groupthink.

Almost everyone here is sucking up to someone else, and dissent is treated harshly. A handful of people sit at the top of the heap and decides everyone's opinions of things. Don't be ridiculous, it's just I have common sense and am able to point out the logic in things. Just because I was the first to point out that Fu wasn't funny doesn't mean no one else thought so. Hell, even he said he wasn't funny in his Holk-bashing topic today. And I've seen quite a few members comment on his lack of humor much more than I. If I have such a heavy influence on people here, it's just because I've earned their respect.

Maybe you should just wait till summer like we keep telling you. Some of us have lives, and don't have time to be using a silly program all the time. Most of you will have more free time in the summer, and it will pick up again.

One of the best things about this place is its relaxed rules. People tend to feel more comfortable when they aren't afraid to post what they really think.

There is no mandate that says you have to read, or even enter the other forums. A lot of people don't, actually.

I like the way that you set this up though, Saladin. I think the best thing to do to make the forum better would be for people to not bring flamewars upon themselves. The biggest problem seems to arise when someone makes a flippant comment. When people defend the person the comment was made against, it is taken as an attack against them, when it could've been prevented outright by thinking before they hit the little post button.

Honestly you have a point, I should try to restrain myself more. But the point I'v been pushing today is that there are blatant problems being ignored, and effort needs to go into them. I haven't been a member of this forum for veery long, but I have been a member of another one for about a year. All forums have thier downtimes.This one will probably pick back up in summer like someone else said. People will quit. But people will return later. This happens most of the time. People get busy and people have lives.

I actually don't find it that bad, really. This place is far better than the other forums that I have visited in the past/do visit. It's just..easier to get along. People talk like they actually KNOW each other and as if they were friends, not like people who are afraid to talk and get yelled at for speaking what they think.

3,367 I don't know if that's alot, but every time I log on, there is usually another member joined. And the amount of posts most people have is pretty high for old members, and nouman isn't that old, and he has a very very high post count.

People like Nouman, Blizzard (etc...) are the people who keep this forum alive, and I like the fact that we can speak our mind, I got banned from a site just because I disagreed with one of the members... 
It is relaxed and I'm glad the mods keep it on it's toe, without tacts* on the floor.

When you have someone who enforces rules like Nouman does, people listen, (I'm not sure if he is a mod, or is he just extra access?), and HaloOfTheSun too.  (I don't really know any other mods but DS, and she seems to be very nice and good too)

I'd say you're one of the best of the newer members, not that I'd say you're new anymore. I thought you were kind of annoying at first; you're not so bad actually, after you went through your adjustment period.

Of course, you have to remember we don't have 3,367 ACTIVE members, but for an RPG Maker-based community (or what started out as that), this is one of the larger and more active forums. Hell, I've been a member on forums with almost 10,000 total members, and we get almost the same amount of posts per day that they do. And Nouman has the highest amount of (real) posts.

1. Go to www.anesisgaming.com/forums , It has hardly like 5-8 active members, still it runs very succesfuly and all of  the members have their fun over there.

2. The Rules are okay, ppl spam topics but for that you can't blame the whole forum because it's the same 2-3 ppl who do it. Also the 1 mod acts like 10 mods(no that doesnt mean they got 10 peenozzez) so the modding is no great deal.
Too many mods would make the place strict, but the mods are kind and friedly, and the forum is good without being strict.

4. You're doing the same mistake Rocko did. Compare the forum with a school. You don't go to school and start sex with you're books all day. You have recess, break periods. Only, our forum is a light school with a better principal(crankeye is good, SILVER U SUX) so it's a nice and light forum. Nice balance over things. We have made different sections for art, for p.e for recess etc. Other forums just join it together.

The implication that the forums are dying is ridiculous. Things have changed since those members that are complaining have joined, and when changes occur, not everyone is going to be happy about it, and there's no sense in trying to alter anything to please everyone, because it isn't going to happen. What really needs to be done is for everyone to quit griping and move on.

That's the smartest thing anyone's said in this thread so far. Well... except for the fact you misspelled "boring", but that's beside the point.

The people who are complaining are not doing anything but "raising points" as to why RMRK isn't as good as it was in its like, "glory days" or something, rather than, you know, actually making an effort to change anything.

Sure, you do have to set goals first, but if these guys really thought the forums were going steadily downhill, why didn't they speak out before?

And then, why are some of them only speaking out at all? Saladin, for example, hasn't made a single post in the RPG Maker section of the forum, but he makes the point that there should be more focus put on it, instead of the extra forums. Why bother? Then Fu, although he does post in the RM section, does so a lot less frequently than he does in the other sections. If that's so important to him, I don't understand why he didn't say something sooner.

I think the next person who say's RMRK sucks The area at the top right of the screen (Do you actually read these news items) should show their name and links to all their posts for the last few days, so we can try and get them more envolved in things... Should a project need a new member, try and recruit those that have nothing else to do... That sort of thing...

It's Saladin, I would love to have him do all the wording for the Bad guys in one of my games, or at least design and make a bad guy for me... (Only cuz his idea's conflict so much with my own, and he is a VERY intelligent guy, when he aint flaming)

Again some people are going to disagree, it's only my opinion:-

It's starting to feel like two seperate forums, one for RPG makers and one for a MODS social club, and if those in that social club like you you get given extra access, if yo don't get the extra access you feel outcast and unwanted... And it seems by that measure that those in the social club being that they have extra access are some how better than those that aren't...

I think the forum having two elements is a nice idea, but I think it's been done in such away it can alienate some members, to the point they feel betrayed by a forum they have given many an hour too.

I don't think Extra access should be given as the Social Club like members feel fit "We like you so your in" cuz that implys if your not in your not liked... It should be done on your REP score... that way even if a member of the social clubs REP should fall they too could be ejected...

Fairness I think the word is... and that in my opinon is what the forum lacks...

When you load RMRK the forum looks up and stores your IP, hostname, referrer etc.

Dupe accounts aren't allowed (sup nexridia) and it's impossible to tell using a proxy.

Because people are idiots. Let me elaborate, before anyone affects my rep... yet again :-) Go to amazon.com. Go see CD reviews... People will rate a CD 5 stars cause it has one song that people like or they will rate a CD 1 star, just because they hate metal or they will give a CD 1 star because the musician says something in an interview that offends the reviewer. People will give DVDs a 5 star review, because the movie has a sex scene or a cameo from Tom Hanks.

In other words, one little thing greatly sways people's judgements about the overall, or in this case 4 little things sway someone's judgement of the forum overall.

When I joined Nintendo Power forum or whatever it is, a few years back. (I think 2003)
They let you edit your posts, they let you have signatures, now, you have to have like 1300 posts just to have the above and more normal stuff like posting links, images, and other stuff like that. It's retarded, people barely ever get banned, and the post rate for a member is usually high, and that means they can now edit their posts, but I have seen so many double (triple) posters on that forum, it's crazy. Also, in order to get over 1000 posts, you'd have to go on a spam rage! What the hell? I tried editing my post one time, and I searched like a billion times to find it, it's not there....  Damn nintendo....
Really, who is going to actually post 1000 posts on Nintendo Forum? I don't think you would. What's there to do, and you can get warned for general talking in the forum that's for general chat. I think it's the power on one...(I haven't, but I heard of some...)

That's exactly the kind of stuff I hate, and so don't do on RMRK =o. Why limit stuff like inbox size (well there IS a limit, but it's in the thousands =p) or editing privelages =x

A downside is that (unlike hbgames.org) since everybody gets everything anyway there's no incentive to donate, but efhg =p

Because apparently some members think it's a big deal to derep someone, and when you say something that they don't like, they can't help but click on that minus button. It's pretty silly, but whatever they think works.
