Aside from Paper Mario 1 and 2, Mario & Luigi 1 and 2 are also a lot like 7 Stars.
I'm pretty sure all four of those games were supposed to be official sequels in the order in they released. (Maybe not Paper Marios, but I could've sworn in Nintendo Power they called Mario and Luigi an official sequel)

They couldn't legally make a offical sequal to SMRPG. Square holds half the license (or something), and at the time they weren't buds with nintendo anymore. They were planning a SMRPG 2, but tha't at the time that Square left for sony.

Not really. Yoshi's Island DS resembles the original's design and gameplay much more than it does Story's. Yoshi's Story was shit anyway and I'm pretty sure Nintendo would rather forget all about it.
