Does anyone know how to do Frankenspriting?

Does anyone know how to Frankenspriting? I am using GraphicsGale and I understand how to add a layer, but when I do that it covers the orignal picture. I must be doing it wrong. ALSO is there a good site for the hair pieces, clothes, shirts etc. BTW if no one knows how to do this but you want to recommend a good sprite maker ( has preset pieces that layer with just a click) that would also be appreciated too! Thanks!

I use paint. It already has pixels.
