It's necessary because, even through all the shit and spam, there are still serious conversations to be had. I mean, even in this part of the forum, it isn't guaranteed that they'll be handled completely maturely, but at least they have more of a chance to develop than they would have in general chat.
This is true, but I only come to the forums for lols anyway so my opinion's a bit biased.
