Switches??

Hi people, i was wondering, what are switches? and how do you make them or use them? I have RPG Maker XP Edition, and im a little confused about it. Please, anyone help

you can use switches for a ton of stuff:

Example:

After boss is dead, switch 1 is turned on.
Door closes when switch 1 is turned on.

That would set it up so after the boss is dead, the door will close.
