MAIA 2K3

Pretext:
With the world of humans consumed in a war, the troops of the empire have been spread thin, and many have seen this as an opportunity to overthrow the organized government. The isolated continent of Annakova remains untouched by this war. It is a small continent populated by fishermen, farmers and an evil governor that will do anything to oppress his people so they do not rise up as others have.

The Awakening:
The oppressive governor has been murdered the previous night and the woman that killed him faces an execution if she cannot escape. This woman, Maia quickly finds her way out of her prison cell and releases three allies, one; Geo was a squire, unjustly thrown into prison for a crime that he claims he cannot remember. The next ally Kraus isn’t just a petty thug or bully, his true allegiance is much larger than anyone anticipates. The final ally is Morgan, the foreseer that was imprisoned for not being able to foresee that the governor would be murdered. The four of them quickly escape the prison, only to have Kraus ditch their party and rejoin his secret allegiance.

Chapter 1: Absolved:
With Maia marked for death, the first thing the party must do is be absolved of their crimes. There are only two people on Annakova that can do that. The governor’s widow is one of them, but she wants the head of Maia, and later wants the heart of Geo. The next is the previous governor that was exiled to a haunted tower on a tiny fog covered island.

However, getting to the tower is the challenge. The trio must first find a way out of their chains, by seeking out a locksmith who is not pleasant to escapees. In the meantime, the trio can find refuge in the guilds. Magic, fighting and thieving guilds are the main three on Annakova. With these guilds come quests, gold and a reputation.

Once the trio have earned a key from the locksmith, they will soon meet a ship’s captain named Baux who will demand treasure. Not your treasure, a treasure that is hidden in a shrine at the southern point of the continent. The party of four will gain the treasure, but not before encountering, Seiko, the undefeatable reaper that takes souls to his master. He knows all, he knows Maia, because she was around the governor’s death.

After the treasure is obtained, Captain Baux will take the trio to the tiny island where all four of them will fight their way to the top. The mysterious man in exile is untrusting, and requires the party to perform good deeds. He will also give them orbs that will recall the good deeds, so that the exiled man can see them.

The major good deed is when the governor’s mansion is burning down. It has been invaded and set ablaze by a band of rogues that have seen the governor’s death as an opportunity to strike! The trio will join forces with the guards of the mansion to retake it by force and face off against the leader of the rogues! After which, the governor’s beautiful young widow will come face to face with the handsome young Geo. He will be captivated by her beauty.

The trio will not be greeted as heroes though until they are absolved of their crimes.

Chapter 2: Tringala
On their way home from the tower, the ship of Baux is blown off course and the ship slams into the small island of Tringala. It might be a small island, but the forests are so thick and dense that it makes travel difficult. Maia and Baux set out to gather wood to repair the ship, but they are soon captured by the hostile natives.

Morgan and Geo set out to find them in the village, but once they are found, there is another problem, Baux and Maia are frozen solid from a paralyzing poison. Geo and Morgan must find a potion to cure them, which is where alchemy comes to be used in the main quest.

Once they have found the ingredients to make the potion, Geo and Morgan return to find Maia gone. She has been taken to the top of a mountain to be sacrificed to the local legendary blue dragon! The heroes must get through the natives and their chief in order to save her, before the blue dragon comes for his sacrifice.

When the heroes rescue Maia, it angers their gods of the underworld and the mountain opens up into a volcano! The party is swallowed into an erupting volcano and must escape not only the volcano, but the island as well!

Chapter 3: Immortality
This is the first step into the massive world of the game. The four of them travel with Morgan’s girlfriend to the huge continent of Bronga, which is a continent being tapped by the empire for its resources and soldiers. Bronga features a fighting arena, where the heroes must compete in a tournament against other parties!

With the victory of a tournament, it gives Maia, Geo and Morgan to a meeting with the governor of Bronga, whose daughter has been kidnapped by a wizard named Magnus. The trio set off to save the governor’s daughter, and encounter a swordsman named Kilmer, who joins them to save the girl. The heroes meet an old foe from Annakova inside the cave, before they face off against the wizard Magnus.

After saving the governor’s daughter, they are invited to a dinner. A dinner of nobles, commanders and last but not least, the governor’s widow and her council will come face to face with Maia.

At the dinner, the governor will tell the heroes of a way the humans can win the war abroad. Immortality. There is a legend of a god named Garuda who has granted sea travelers immortality so they can live to get back to their home. The tower of the winged Garuda is on its own huge island. If Garuda will not give immortality, the heroes are to kill the immortal Garuda.

When the heroes fail to defeat Garuda, they are imprisoned for failing at their task. The only way out of this stronger prison is for Maia to tap into her powers, unknown even to her, but awakened when she dreams.

Demo #4 new / updated features

- new second continent east of the original (there is actually a third continent, but I have not done anything with that yet). The second continent is twice the size of the original continent, and it is more dense than the original. The second continent has some big land masses, joined by a network of tunnels.
- The second continent is not yet complete, only just the major land mass in the center is complete.
- New towns, villages, a mansion, a collisseum, caves, tunnels, woods, shrines, and a tower have all been added.
- the player can compete in the collisseum and in tournaments.
- Also at the collisseum, you can bet on and watch monster fights (there is not that big of variety right now for the monster fights). Bets are done in ratios, bet 10 GP on a monster with 2 odds get 20 GP. Get the drift?
- New mini game Pachisi (board game), where you are given dice rolls to make it to the end of the board. There are good spaces that give gold and health, there are bad spaces that damage you, drop you through the floor and so much more! The shrine you find the Pachisi in is located on the northern island of the second continent. You need play tokens to play though.
- You must go through the dating system in order to get off of the first continent.
- The dating system is also GREATLY improved since Demo #3. There were bugs in the system, now there is not.
- More dreams were added. The dreams are just as strange as before, but now that the game has progressed so far, there are dreams that pertain to things in the game. In other words, nightmares that haunt the characters.
- Bugs involving dreams were squashed.
- A little dream counter was added so people cannot keep jumping into bed to view all of the dreams. (dreams only happen with certain characters, and other dreams you have to have had events in the game.)
- Realism bug fixed, where if you turned off the bounty when the game first starts, you would not be able to pass the first guard, now you can, just walk around him.
- leveled enemies, so as your levels go up, the variety of enemy attacks increases. Such as a giant worm would only attack, until you are at level 10, then it will try to bite you in half.
- much smarter enemies. They will heal themselves, some will run if outnumbered, others will protect their nests with lethal force when they would not use that same force if it were not a nest.
- There is more of a variety of battles, some are beat the clock, others are survive the clock. oh and classic fight to the finish battles of course.
- More game customization. Find books to change your classes, and when you are done with chapter 1 you have the oppertunity to revert your classes from prisoner.
- New clan with new side quests.
- More variety to quests in general.
- Fall tiles, fall through one floor to another and appear on the exact position before.
- Teleportation... Yes, other games have it, but mine doesn't, now it does. Scrolls, spells, items that will teleport you to past towns, villages and mansions.
- More conditions / spells... I went digging and imagining when having to upgrade the AI of enemies. I've added some very good conditions and spells. Airhead, Ironize, Stopspell (different than silence), and more are added to the already great amount of spells and conditions.
- As it stands right now, if you just wiz through the game doing only the main quest, it is 5 hours of map time, probably about 15 hours in all.

Demo #3 new / updated features

- The first chapter of the game is completed, leaving the player with a finish and satisfaction at the end.
- The player is now given choices as to which handicaps / realism effects to remove to make the game more playable for beginners.
- There is now a quest tally system that keeps track of how many quests you have completed. The new character in the Pringo Tower keeps track of them.
- Because the game is now has a specific end point (end of chapter 1), there is an ending sequence. Due to the fact that there are now removable handicaps, and the quest tally system, there are really 5 endings! 3 endings for people that complete the game with handicaps turned off. 1 ending for people who play the game normally, the way it was made to be played, and 1 ending for those amazing enough to complete all of the quests and side quests.
- More points of fun / interest have been added to the world, along with all of the villages / towns are complete (including the interiors of houses).
- Enemies, attacks, skills improved / tweaked
- New skills, new classes.
- Several things fixed, tweaked, whatevered.
- The game is so far 3 hours of map time, and that is with me knowing exactly where to go. In all there is probably 8-10 hours of playing the game in all (map time does not count battle time).

Demo #2 new / updated features

- Improved monster graphics
- New cooking system, don't just catch fish, cook them. The cooking stat improves as you get better. There are also things to improve your cooking.
- There is a fishing system (this was in the game before, but it was not mentioned in the list). Now the fish must be cooked though.
- Lock pick system. Find a locked door and want in? Pick the lock using one of four lock picks! The lock pick stat improves as you get better.
- Because of the lock pick system there is now more detail to the days and nights. Before at night, people would just go into their homes and disappear, now you can pick the locks and find them inside!
- There is now a shovel mini game in the first town. The game even remembers where you have dug. You can play 10 times (30 places to dig), until you need to leave the town so the game can be reset.
- New charas, mostly guards and guild of fighters members to offer some variety.
- Due to how dark some areas are, a torch system has been implamented.
- A lantern system is also implamented. The only difference between the torch and the lantern system is the lanterns use oil and you can turn them off.
- There is also a spell of radiance, so you can use that to light your way.
- The game will not only have torches and lanterns, but spells too.
- A spell of repellant. There was already fairy water / repellant in the game, but now there is a spell to repell.
- Sword techniques for guards and soldiers, because there is a long point in the game where you fight along side of the guards. Those battles were tedious and one dimensional, so the guards have been given some techniques to fight with.
- In the area you fight along side the guards, details have been added to improve the atmosphere.
- New monsters, monster groups and the areas they appear in have been added. It gives a greater variety.
- The ship master now charges to go to the islands.
- The story extends further, getting the main story back on track (those who found where the story leads know what I am talking about).
- 2 new areas consisting of 10 new maps. Along with a good sized storyline / continuation of the main storyline. Drama It is the thrilling (I hope) finale of the second island.
- Several things fixed, tweaked, whatevered.

Demo #1 features

- This RPG features a day and night system with five periods of day (morning, noon, evening, night, late night).
- There is also a clock system to keep track of the time in the field. Unfortunately it does not keep track of time in battles or in the system menu.
- Along with the night and day system, there is an advanced weather system along with each region has its own stats for certain weather events. In other words, the weather goes along with weather patterns set for the region that you are in
- The game also features dreams that take the player to strange new places. The dreams are based on who is in the party.
- The game also includes dabbling in a dating system. There are a few datable characters in the game.
- There is also a stealing system, once the stealing skill is learned, the player can sneak up behind a NPC to take from the NPC.
- This also means the player could get caught stealing from NPCs.
- This also means a bounty system, that the game also features.
- Having a bounty on the player's head will result in different reactions from NPCs, as well as going to jail, and being put in leg braces.
- There are different bounties / fines for different crimes. Stealing is ten times the value of what was stolen.
- Murder of a citizen is a flat 1000 gold, murder of a guard is a flat 5000, murder of officials and royalty is a flat 10,000
- When captured by the guards, you can pay the fine given for the crime or you can go to jail.
- When you have a bounty of over 10,000 you will go to jail without a choice of paying the fine.
- The game also has a guild system.
- So far there are only three guilds, the fighters, mage and thieves guilds. Each has their own requirements to join them.
- They each have their own ranking system and quests / duties / orders to complete for advancement. These quests make for excellent filler.
- There are many side quests and a main quest. The game is like basket weaving. It just keeps progressing as I do work to it.
- So far, in map time, and map time alone, I have spent two full hours in the game. This does not include battles, work in the system menu, nor does it include times the party has perished :-)

After all of that, its 9 MB.

Wow, if you did all that in 2003 then I'm sure it is worth at least checking out, which I'm going to do right now.  :D

EDIT: Gave it a quick look over, and quickly noticed EVERYTHING IS RTP! Whcih is not good. Do yourself a favor and find some non-RTP resources. Your mapping is quite good, espescially for RTP, so that will help a lot. And try to find some different charsets (although with 2003 you have to find the battle characters too. :() And try to get something besides standard RTP music and sounds and title screeen and game over screen. Also, it seems like a bad idea to mis RPG 2003 and RPG 2000 monsters together. One is side view, while the other is front...

Otherwise, get some custom resources and you'll be doing great. Now I just have to play the game a little more...

I don't have RPG Maker 2000, I have whatever I obtained in a special add on pack, maybe that has the 2000 resources in it. There are different midis I've imported from somewhere, but that's about all that is unique.

Also what did you mean by my mapping is quite good?

There's an add-on for 2000, maybe you downloaded that?  :?

I mean, for RTP, your maps look pretty good. You actually understand what all the tiles in the chipsests are supposed to be, and most importantly, your houses actually look like houses! You'd be surprised how many people's games that use RTP have such crappy looking maps. Crappy even by RTP standards. Although, I kind of like some of the RTP chipsets for 2003.

Um, anyway, it's a compliment for sure. If you go and find better chipsets, I'm sure you could make some very good maps.

Morrowind. Yes, exactly where I got the ideas from :-) And what do you think was difficult to cram into the game? It was all pretty easy to program, I think the toughest thing was bug testing every little detail.

For those that don't know Morrowind is a 3D 1st person RPG, that allows you to do anything you wish, be a criminal, be a hero.

There aren't any deadly / dangerous glitches, there are no loops or excessive paralell processes. I have gone through the game as I made it.

Alright, posted some screens as I progress through the game. I've posted the same photos and catpions on the webpage I put up. I will soon post photos of the map / maps.

Looking at how dark some of the photos are, I need to put a lantern / torch system into the game.

Its a terrific game! the only things are that it's sometimes too dark and that the fire's aren't litting. You nkow they don't give light.

and in your prologue i can see the hero in the top corner, thats easy to make away. use a blank charater sheet as a charater and just a few moments before the prologue is ended add the event: chance player looks or something like that. and just add it to normal.
here is an empty character sheet!
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/5803/charset31ji.png
if you don't get my hint it's in the down-left corner of the charset!

b.t.w i only played the beginning so more can come lateron!

Or you can go to System, and don't put anyone in the party, and then add the starting heroes at the end of the prologue.

Thanks for the tips on the prologue. I've made a lantern and a torch system for the next update. I took a look at the screenshots and realized they are really dark. The torch system is easy, while the lantern system uses lantern oil.

Has anyone accomplished everything?

I've decoded your post :-) Why am I the opposite of everyone else? Because I love the RTP pre-made charas / backgrounds / music / monsters? I do find them quite cute and the fact that they were made by the same person means consistancy that I do not see with other sets.

What's an I337 programmer? I'm kind of new to the RTP world. I've made games before, but I've never interacted with the community (because I didn't know there was one until www.crankeye.com).

UPDATES:

I have added new charas, new guard charas similar to the original guards, but offering a different variety.

I have uninstalled R2K3, and reinstalled it to get that R2K addon / upgrade out, so I now am using R2K3 enemies (sorry I mixed them together before, but I did not know).

I have added a mini game into the first town. It involves a shovel, and you dig in spaces. You get three tries to find something. After your 3 tries are up, you can play again for a fee ofcourse, but the game remembers where you had dug, so it won't repeat the prizes until you leave the town.

I have extended the storyline / getting closer to getting the story on track (those who have gone through the entire thing know where there's a sidetrack). Like I said before, it is like basket weaving, I just keep going, I have the story all in my head, but if I write it all down it will be very overwhelming for me.

Finally... a MAP of the first continent, Annakova! The second continent, is the island (I am calling it Island of Hostiles so as to not spoil anything). It may look like an island, but there are plenty of things to do on it.

Your the opposite of everyone else, because everyone else uses no RTP(If rm2k3) and they have little or no programming.(Which is what I'me seeing lately).
But you seem to have a lot of programming in your game, which most people don't and its good programming, so that makes you a l337 programmer.

Since this post I have gone back through the game to play it again for the first time. Some of the dialog I had forgotten how amusing it can be. "I'm not his daughter," you'll get it when you see it :-) I have improved things as well as timed just breezing through the game. I am at the halfway point and according to the game clock I have 1 hour of map time, which I think means at least 5 or 6 hours playing time.

I will probably be uploading a new version tomorrow.

A lot has been done since the last update.

2 new areas consisting of 10 new maps. Along with a good sized storyline / continuation of the main storyline. Drama :-) It is the thrilling (I hope) finale of the second island

Made the player get back on track of the story, those who have reached the halfway point know what I am talking about.

Spells of radiance. The game will not only have torches and lanterns, but spells too.

A spell of repellant. There was already fairy water / repellant in the game, but now there is a spell.

Sword techniques for guards and soldiers, because I am not sure if everyone reached where you fight along side of the guards, but wow were those battles tedious, so I gave the guards some techniques to fight with.

Also when you fight along side of the guards, I have added details to the area you fight in.

I have added several new monster groups / monsters and areas they appear in. It gives variety.

The ship master now charges.

Several things fixed, tweaked, whatevered.

Y'know this game sounds fricken' awesome. But why is it so big?
Thats a good question, especially if you only used rtp in the first demo.....
Is there just so many maps and stuff that the game is amazingly  huge??
Because if so, then that means that it would just be CRAZY COOL! Which I'm sure it already is.

It was so big because I am new to this and did not know how to purge the things that were not in the game.  I think the largest map is 1 MB. There are 121 maps in the latest version.

Speaking of new things, because I too am on dial up, while I was uploading the 9 MB file, I started making a restaurant / waitress / cook / own the restaurant style mini game.

My average maps are 50 x 50. Also, my overworld map is tricky, I have hidden areas in there, like if you walk onto a square that looks like a lone tree, or a lone pond, it opens up to a new map that is 50 x 50 offering great detail and just fun little side treks. I am trying to keep the game high in fun :-) The Dragon Warrior games to me were moreso fun, and that is why I loved playing them, as opposed to a huge in depth story that Final Fantasy had. Not to say that my game does not have an in depth story, the story is not the focus of my game.

the bounty on your head at the beggining is incredibly anoying. you are handicaped and all the monsters are more powerful then you.

Isn't the point of each game to start off where you have the weakest things? Where you unlock things and progress further in the game? I do think you can run from the more powerful monsters like Annakondas, or just stay away from areas with difficult areas.

There is no blacksmith, but there is a weasponsmith, armorer at each town, and a locksmith on the first town. If you are looking for weapons and armor, become a member of the fighter's guild and they will sell you some :-) See, its all a matter of talking to people, and joining guilds. They make things a lot easier. The guild of fighters is in the first town, the guild of mages is in the first town, and the guild of thieves is in the second town.

I know about the idea of a jail in each town. I am thinking about having one in each kingdom.

This is just the first continent. There are two islands, a minor island, and a major island. I think you find the minor island an hour's worth of map time. I think you find the major island 90 - 120 minutes of map time into the game.

I am sure like all games when going from continent to continent there will be a boat or airship. You don't want to give away too many things on the first continent.

I have thought about that with every game I have made... the door factor. Doors can be on the north, east and west, not just the south. I will stick someone in the town that says that or something like that. Sorry for the confusing frustration

As of right now, the whole main part of the quest is doing what it takes to get the fine off of you. Also, avoid the daytime, the guards are out in force in the daytime. I think there are a few people that will warn you of that.

As for stealing, you need to be taught the technique, either by a book or someone in the thieves guild. Same for cooking :-) Same for lock picking.

How do you DO this stuff? You have a crazy cool, super omega game! Oh yeah, and as a suggestion, since I'm a dial-up user and think this game is awesome, why not exclude the rtp files? It would likeley make the game around 1 or 2 MB(I think) if you just didn't include the rtp files.
Meaning a quicker upload time for you, and a quicker download time for all dial-up users. cuz 9 MB takes about an hour on my comp, and I have to do other things...

STEALING

Do what? Like learn how to steal? A few quests into the thieves guild you learn how. There is also a book on it. You get a skill. If your skill is at 0, you cannot even do the command to steal, because it would throw everyone off more than telling people in the forums that you can steal :-) Once you have learned how, the stealing stat is at 1. With each successful steal, you get a 0.1 added to your stat. So 10 successful steals / pickpockets gets you an extra 1 for your stat :-) Simple as that.

COOKING

It is the same for cooking, and picking locks... well to an extent. With cooking, you can buy things to cook with like pots, pans, frying pans that will improve your chances. You can learn how to cook from books. There is even a book that tells you what percentage your cooking stat needs to be to cook certain fish. I also want to make a fish selling restaurant mini game :-)

LOCK PICKING

With lock picking, you need to have a lock pick, and you need to know how to pick locks to actually pick locks. If you know how to pick locks (your lock pick stat is higher than 0), BUT you do not have a lock pick, you cannot pick a lock. You must have both, and the better the lock pick, the better your chances. I think you learn how to pick locks from the thieves guild a few missions in.

FISHING

As for fishing... that's totally different, there is no *real* logic to fishing. I would like to implament logic for fishing, but then it dampens the point of fishing. The fishing point is to get extra money, or when you're out in the wilderness, you can catch fish, cook them and eat them, instead of using potions. Trust me, on the second island, you need to :-) The only thing you need to fish, is a pole, bait and a fishing spot. So far there are 3 fishing spots. There is even a fishing mission.

Does anyone want me to make a FAQ of all of this stuff? I do have it written down in my notes :-)

mmm as the game stands now, I am at a point of the plot where I can stop and the game is completable. So far the main story line revolves around being obsolved of a crime. I have just finished that part of the main plot by finally making the characters obsolved :-) ah rest time...

Unfortunately the being obsolved is really just the first chapter, and being obsolved is a stepping stone :-) With the main storyline done (so far) it is 3 hours of map time, and that is with me knowing exactly what to do and where to go. Map time does not count for battles :-)

I think I need to put in a big battle before you are obsolved though.

To make the game more playable at first, I have made a difficulty or a lessening of realism. At the start of the game, the player gets a CHOICE if the player wishes to start the game with the 10,000 bounty on their head. Although really the whole point is getting the bounty off of your head, but the quests still exist, but you now have the CHOICE to start the game with or without the bounty. The player also gets a CHOICE about the leg braces. If the player choses not to have the realism of the leg braces, the player will never have them, even when thrown in prison. Simple as that. CHOICEs.

Because of these choices, the game will have 4 different endings. The game's demo #3 will be fully playable and fully completable, as in, this chapter will be complete before going to a new chapter.

Also... to make things more interesting, I went back to my notes, counted up all of the quests, saw what the quests are and now you can see how many quests including side quests you have done compared to how many quests there are. There is 65 quests in the game so far, which is kind of a lie, because there are quests that you can do multiple times and I did not include them in the tally. I will probably make a 5th ending for those who have done all 65 quests. You can also still play the game even after you beat the main storyline :-) It is just more fun that way.

I have put more points of fun / interest into the game. Along with now because you can complete the first chapter, you can finally get to the part where you are relieved as a prisoner class and put into your real starting classes. One class is unusual, and involves a lot of telekenisis with unusual and unique spells :-)

Demo #3 is up, this will be the last demo for a while now, I am going to go to the second continent and make the storyline continue with chapter 2. I have also sent in an email for this site to have my game in the games section, being that I host it myself. Unfortunately there are no new screenshots for demo #3, because I can't really "show" programming or how something ends, but here are the features:

But I still don't like like the realistic/unrealistic idea. I didn't mind haveing the leg brace or 10000 G on my head, even though I ran from most monsters anyway. Good job with monsters, usually people make the monsters either have too much HP or too little strength points. (Generally speaking of the beginning boss battle).

I have created the second continent to the east (you may notice there is actually a continent to the south west mapped out in demo #3, but that is not the second continent). The second continent is twice the size of the original continent, and it is more dense than the original. The second continent has some big land masses, joined by a network of tunnels.

I have played from where chapter 1 leads to chapter 2 (this transition is called escaping Annakova). You must go through the dating system in order to get off of the first continent, as a twist of events happen that cause the player to look to other characters for help. I also GREATLY improved the dating system. There were bugs in the system, now there is not. So far, I am more than three and a half hours of map time into the game.

There are also quite a few areas that will need a ship / cannoe to get to, but as far yet, there is no ship in the game other than the ships that ferry the player to given points (Volkova, Pringo Island, Tringala Island).

The major points and plots of the second chapter are plotted out (I just make it up as I go along). It is a natural progression from things said at the end of the first chapter.

Oh yeah... more dreams were added! The dreams are just as strange as before, but now that the game has progressed so far, there are dreams that pertain to things in the game. In other words, nightmares that haunt the characters, like Gomi-Tre (huge part / wyvern of the second island). Some bugs involving dreams were squashed and a little dream counter was added so people cannot keep jumping into bed to view all of the dreams. Plus dreams only happen with certain characters, and other dreams you have to have had events in the game... such as escaping Gomi-Tre.

For those worrying about getting the 9 MB download and then I come out with demo #4. Do not worry, demo #4 will not come out until I am done with the second continent, which is a long time, so download demo #3 and enjoy it! You will be able to continue demo #4 from where you are in demo #3.

Hmmm if you speak with the guards they should throw you in jail for your crime, which means you have the realism off, so they do not throw you in jail.

I never tested the game without the realism off. Start a new game, keep the realism on, and progress in the game OR just turn off the leg braces and keep on the 10,000 fine on your head.

What causes you to not go past the guard at the end of the hall is NOT HAVING the 10,000 fine. I have made a correction for the 4th Demo, where you can just walk around the guard if you do not have the fine on your head.

I think I pulled the name of the eggmines from my head. I just made a new egg mine for the second continent. As for egg mines, Morrowind stole that from something else. The eggs in my mind come from Ogres, the eggs in Morrowind comes from Kwamas. Either way,

I have added many locations to the second continent, caves, tunnels, the governor's mansion, dungeon, a colluseum that will be a part of the main storyline, and various other locations. I have extended / padded the main story line to get more quests out of it.

Some of the maps are turning out good. I did not want to make the maps of the first continent that complex, because the further a person goes into the game, the greater the maps / dungeons / caves and tunnels should be, otherwise it would be a lot of the same, and it would start becoming unappealing.

I am almost done with the first land mass, and then I will move on to the other smaller land masses around the main one. Here are some screen shots from the second continent:

It has been a while since the last update (or even since someone posted). I have furthered the main storyline. Taking the player through some small quests, and into competition in the collisseum! The player must go through a 16 team tournament, to go further in the storyline, and then from there, it goes into the real start of chapter 2.

There are new maps to go along with the storyline as it continues, there is also a reaccuring character and a new one that is the main villain of the second chapter (well there are 2 main villains, this is just the first).

When creating the den of the first main villain, I leveled the enemies. In other words, when your levels go up, the enemies attacks get more interesting. Lets just take a tarantula for instance, normally, just poisons and attacks. Now as the player's levels go up, it attacks with paralyzing darts, because seriously some tarantulas can throw their fangs! The monsters are also just plain more intelligent. Monsters heal injured ones, then run away when they are left alone.

Quite a few more side quests added, one new clan, and now with all of this it is 4 and a half hours map time, and around 12 hours game time. There is also more customization with the game. For those of you who were obsolved, you found that you could change your classes. Now there are books to change them.

Who says you need to have good graphics, good music, good characters and a good story for a game to be interesting :-) Not that my game doesn't have good characters and a good storyline, but I haven't posted anything about them.

*** MONSTER FIGHTS ***

Oh and the game gets even more interesting, because at the collisseum, you can bet on monster fights and watch them!!! Then you get paid out a ratio, like bet 100 on a monster that hads ods of 3. win 300 its that simple :-) But your monster needs to win of course :-)

I had made a monster vs monster fighting system with RPGXP and I didn't think it was possible for RPG2K3 to have it, I proved myself wrong :-)

I have furthered the storyline a bit more as well, I am getting everything set for the bulk of chapter 2... Immortality.

Hmmm releasing the next version? I really don't know. I will say a minimum of one week.

I think I'm about halfway through the main storyline of the second chapter. I keep padding it, you know main quest has quests in between. The first chapter was probably halfway through when I released the first demo.

I really don't want to release a weekly demo, cause its rough on those that have dialup, which I have dial up too, and my server only uploads at 2 Kbps and if I don't cancel the upload when its done... the server deletes it, cause its weird.

Another catch is there are two towns, both are baron, no population other than those that need to be there for stores and quests. So I will populate them. I also would like to get to a point where the second major villain in the second chapter makes its appearance.

I am currently working on the dinner party. There is something that the main quest involves, that when I originally plotted the storyline, it kind of goes from point A to B to D to E.... in other words, I need something in there so it makes more sense. A-B-C-D-E. Part C is the dinner party.

Its long scripted, with returns of characters from the first chapter, involving a lot of character developement, and instead of making it huge amount of dialog, I am making it a little game / task / quest where you interact with various questions and get responses at the party.

*** USELESS FACTS ***

mmm... useless facts... there are now 202 maps in the game. Small rooms and dream worlds count for maps too.

Map time is now 5 hours... and that's me knowing where to go, and with the increased monster attacks in the second chapter, there is a heck of a lot more fighting. That probably means play time is now around 15 hours. For those that may complain about monster attacks, there is fairy water and repellant :-)

*** NEW STUFF ***

Fall tiles... remember in Dragon Warrior how if you walk on a fall tile, you would fall through to the exact position one floor below? I have that. You step on a fall tile, the screen goes dark, the character secretly moves to the correct position, and the lights come back on one floor under :-) Nifty.

Teleportation... Yes, other games have it, but mine doesn't, now it does. Scrolls, spells, items that will teleport you to past towns, villages and mansions.

More conditions / spells... I went digging and imagining when having to upgrade the AI of enemies. I've added some very good conditions and spells. Airhead, Ironize, Stopspell (different than silence), and more are added to the already great amount of spells and conditions.

Dozen new characters... Well these have been added since I've started the second chapter, I just have not made any reference to them. I should write out character bios like other people do when they pitch games :-) You know, name, age, background, prefered gear, story.[/img]

Jesus! You obviously work on this game quite a lot. You keep us updated about twice a week and every time you tell us something new, nit only did you program 200 more things for your game, you also added another hour of gameplay. 80% of the people who make games do not use all this programming. Most use tutorials written by other people.
I'm pretty good at rm2k/3 programming, but I don't give out tuts because most of the things I program are slightly iffy and main;y I just want people to say:
"Hey, I'll just figure it out myself in about 20 minutes and get it exactly as I want it."

Instead of:
"Hey, I want to have a cms in rm2k3, I'll go search for a tutorial on how to make one."

Yeah, you can use a tutorial as a template for programming something complex like a cms, but there are some things that almost anyone can do very easily, but they don't! They search for some simple things, like day & night systems. Of course, a day&night system with actual times and more than just screen tinting invloves going deeper into the situation.

Man, what was I blabbing about just now? Kinda went off-topic.

I can barely read tutorials by other people. Its really not that hard. Its just the length of some things get to the point where people can't remember them.

I love my day and night system, morning, noon, evening, night, wee hours. My day / night system for RPGXP is far better it goes in 24 hour cycles, and it is constantly going, but RPG2K3 won't allow it.

I don't know, but always thanks for posting. I have added a few more side quests, bringing the quest total to about 82 last I counted. There is a character in the game that keeps track of all of it.

I was just at GamingW.net, which has turned into a horribly outdated site. I submit some things there, as well as one of their featured games took someone 3 years to complete and its play time is 10-15 hours total. Ouch. I guess that's another reason I don't waste time with graphics :-)

82 quests is A LOT! When my game is done, it should be about 5-8 hours and there are 20 side quests and 12 main quests. Meaning you already have 50 more side quests than I will eventually have total quests. That is very good, since about a week or two ago, you said there were about 50 some. And adding 30 side quests in about a week is a very good thing.

I don't think it took me a week for those quests, maybe 2 or 3 weeks, maybe I just never posted the progress. I made and played two side quests today for the guild of mages...

The second one is probably the most interesting mages guild quest by far. You get to step into a boy's dreams to save him, and then a good twist once you're out of the dreams.

Oh and a major new mini game that I don't think anyone has done for any RPG Maker game. Pachisi. In other words a board game like Dragon Warrior III for Gameboy Color had.

It is really nice, I made a shrine for it on one of the northern island of the second continent.

Finally one more question to you Dragonmanga, because you want the next demo, does that mean you've completed the last one? Because you can't get to the second chapter / continent, until you're done with the first.

And when you ask If I have finished the last demo, do you mean that you only include the new features with each demo? (I haven't even started the last demo, cause I haven't even finished the first one).

Download demo #3 save it over demo #1, your saves should still work. The demos are all the same game, its just that I've added more to it. Demo #1 was halfway through the first chapter, Demo #2 was almost through the first chapter, Demo #3 is the full first chapter, Demo #4 whenever it comes out will probably be half or most of the second chapter and the first chapter.

The three tokens: one on the first continent, another on the second island, the third on the second continent...

oh and second continent (the places on the main land mass are marked):

How come Your guy touches a mirror and it turns into a flaming Hell?

Seriously, dreams are random, they are based on the characters you have in your group. The lion dream is meant for comical purposes. The stone man is meant for somewhere later in the game. Its a tease. There are NPCs that tell you about dreams. heck there is one swammi that tells you the point of each dream :-)

I've gone back through the game and added a lot more... puzzles!!! :-) In the first Governor's mansion alone I have added four more little fun things to keep interest. Three of them are required to progress in the game, one is just for the heck of it.

These puzzles are zelda like and fun. Hopefully nothing all that complex, although one really twisted my mind making it. The combination is 3, 1, 2, 4. You'll know what I mean when you see it :-)

I can't remember the tiger dream hmmm... I will look it up. I just looked it up, and I think you're thinking of the lion. Anyway, sleeping will not help you escape from prison. Theres a pretty easy way out.

Dreams are reaccuring, but there is a trigger that will only let you have 2 dreams until you exit the building. This prevents people from jumping into bed just to see the dreams :-) Speaking of dreams, I think I will add some more.

Here are some photos of the puzzles that fit nicely into one screen (well some things are off the screen, but I moved them into one screen).

Originally this cave looked much like this.

Now it has more puzzles and push stones.

The first dungeon has been reworked with a new puzzle.

Don't let this fool you. This puzzle is more complex than what it looks like.

Other puzzles are more broad, and less visual than these photos.

Wow. GOod Job. It's not like you did anything that hasn't been done before. But you did it well. You set realistic goals, kept the storyline preety basic, and made a huge RPG based on side-quests. You sir, are a very good at game design. I tip my digital hat to you.

Since you are new i will give you a tip maia..
1.Don't say "The government has just been shot you are standing over his dead body. You get thrown in jail for his murder"Make it into the storyline.
2.Dont make your entire party join you in 1 minute.

Other then that its pretty cool.

Mental 1: There is a tiger dream, I just cannot find it currently. Speak with the Swammi in Volkola, she will probably be able to help you.

Inaru: mmm backhanded compliments :-) I have no goals in general, its basket weaving, I just keep adding to the game. The storyline gets more complex in the way that Lord of the Rings gets more complex. You start with a simple spine of the story and branch off into other things. As for the hugeness of the game based on side quests. The main storyline so far is 60 quests long, and that is the bulk, the longest and the more challenging quests :-) So far there are only 33 side quests.

xanaxx : thanks, but did you mean Good, Gay? Great? Gruesome? :-)

Mental 2: The government wasn't shot in the back. You do get thrown in jail, and if you haven't caught what I've said on this topic for the longest time, the whole point of the first chapter is being obsolved of the crime. Oh and there are dream sequences about the murder, and there are characters that clue you in on things like Sekio, Balam, Bashem, and of course the widow.

In other words, the story unfolds as you play the game. Hence why at first there is a simple story, but as you play it gets very broad. Not to ruin anything, but it becomes about pawns, an empire, love, passions.

Technically the entire party doesn't join in the first minute, something happens to one of them. I prefer to play games, instead of read a story for 30 minutes. That's just me :-)

Remember Dragon Warrior III, and many of the Final Fantasies have you start off with 4 people. There are quite a lot more characters that join your party. Baux, Ellen, Kilmore. I guess that I can have Morgan in a different part of the mansion.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for everyone's comments, I appreciate the people PMing me who have legitimately gone into the game far enough to have questions :-) Its really them at this point that I am continuing to make this game. I also have done more work on the game. I will post it later.

News on the game. More puzzles as you read (more than when I last posted). More side quests (involving more thought than monster killing). More play tokens added for the Pachisi board.

The dinner party is now complete. Lots of dialog and character development. I need to make buffer quests, before the dinner party, and after it, just due to the 14 day waiting period (you'll know why when you see it).

The lair of the second villain has been finalized, along with some interesting puzzles in there. The discussion with the second villain is much like a puzzle as well, only with punnishments for doing the wrong thing.

The second *major* villain of the second continent is less villainous at the present moment. After the meeting with the second villain there is a major plot twist that I am thinking about removing. Anyway, the storyline is continued.

Where the story twists and takes the player to will have new chracters, and one that escaped in the middle of the first chapter.

More creatures. More afflictions, items and so on. More things to do, such as now you can bring snake skins (python, rattler, viper) or any material to a tailor and they can make you special items :-)

I have also been fixing bugs that people that really PLAY THE GAME have been finding.

@Mental: The double posting is ok, it's their topic and they posted something significant to validate the double post, plus it had been after the 24 hour rule. Also there is nothing wrong at all with getting the entire party right away. There are games where you get your party very early on and those are the only characters you use the entire game.

@Charlie_Kilo: No offense to you, but from your post it doesn't seem like you are one to judge on grammar and spelling. Hehe.

@maia: You should include the font patch with your game so people who don't have rm2k won't have the font problem, or those that don't have the font patch.

EdIt: I only played to the point where I was getting out of the governor's mansion, because the guards nearly killed everyone in my party and I didn't feel like getting a game over.

THE OLD:
I would finish the game, but the game is 15 hours so far and I don't think that anyone got 2 hours into it. It is disproportionately difficult at the start which is why I put the choice at the beginning as to play the game with handicaps or not. I did try to justify it as the game should get easier as time goes on. Being that you can do as you please with the game, it felt too free so that you did not have to advance the main quest. You had to advance the main quest to get off of the first continent, but no one bothered to :-) (at least I assume from the nothing I am told).

THE NEW:
I am 40 minutes into Maia 2K7. It follows the same storyline as before, only now the main quest is a lot more goal oriented. It is *much easier* and there is no confusion as to what to do. There are reminders of quests. Lets say you enter a cave to kill egg poachers. Each time you enter that cave you are reminded to do something about the egg poachers.

The original Maia floundered around, where you needed 3000 GP to remove the leg braces... so you could do anything you wanted to get the 3000 GP. Hence where the game lost focus. All while you had to find a way to get to Pringo Island (the first island).

In Maka here is how things were.
1. Escape the governor's mansion
2. Speak with Locksmith...
3. Realize the Locksmith's son is missing (its never stated you need to find the missing posters).
4. Find the Locksmith's son (this was vague too).
5. Get 3000 GP to have the key made.
6. Make the key.

In Maia 2K7 there is a clear cut series of steps to do.
1. Escape the governor's mansion (in a box)
2. Buy disguises (so towns people won't run and guards won't chase you)
3. Tailor will not talk to you cause you are criminals.
4. Save the Tailor's son from a well (this branches into what can be a series of side quests).
5. Tailor is happy, but the disguises have been taken by a crotchity old man.
6. Elusively steal the costumes at night avoiding to make any sound.
7. Put on the costumes / disguises (this is where you CUSTOMIZE YOUR CHARACTERS)
8. Set off to the Locksmith who will not just sell you the key.
9. Locksmith has you find who killed his wife (series of events that I will not spoil).
10. Locksmith sells you a key for 3000 GP (the price could change)

And with the need for 3000 GP, you can join guilds or go back to do side quests.

So far Maia 2K7 there are 7 quests, that take me 40 minutes. There are even puzzle rooms, where you do the puzzle for a treasure, but the puzzles completed also count up. 4 main quests, 3 side quests, 3 puzzle rooms, 1 village, 1 town, 1 mansion, 1 side area (pond), and 1 egg mine.

Egg mine? Like the one in Morrowind? I don't know if it's too good an idea to rip that directly from them.

Technically all RPGs are rip offs of something. I am keeping the egg mine, because it serves a purpose. It had a tunnel that lead to Pringo Island before a cave in. Zelda's Moblins are really Goblins. Orcs, elves. Its all recycled anyway. Now if I actually rip off a pontoon city, you can shoot me.

I mean, does it have to be an EGG mine? Why can't they be mining something else?

For protien for another source of food other than fish and lizards. There are other mines, it is just that the first one is an egg mine. I also just made a DDR quest, it is quite fun, at least in my opinion.

I will have the Maia 2K7 up soon. I am now 80 minutes into the game. I have done 13 quests out of 15. It is fully playable and quite nice. Skills that let you manipulate the environment, weather, time, guilds, side quests, VERY NICE AREAS, cooking, fishing, puzzles and everything is better explained than the original Maia.

Oh yeah and there is a heck of a lot of dialog. In the original Maia, there were dialog heavy scenes for some things, but otherwise there was barely any dialog, because I personally do not like RPGs where you get bogged down in dialog instead of in game content.

There was tons of dialog in Morrowind, I just don't think anyone ever bothered to read it.

Morrowind had statements, not dialog mine has banter in between characters and the quest givers. Thus making character development :-) Actually I think I will post the alpha now in a different topic :-) See you all there!

I've updated the start of the topic to include a very long synapse. No one has ever confirmed to me that they've beaten chapter 1, so I decided to post info about the two other chapters.

Wow old school!

So what did you think of it? Why is it a good game?

I should dust it off and see if I can beat it 2 or 3 years later after I made it :-)
