Its all me
How do I increase the size of the map? And also how do I get the screen to follow the character moving out of the frame.

First, you go to your map on the bottom right of the screen and right click and pick map properties

Then you can change the height and width of the map on there

And for your second question, I don't think I understand what you're asking.  Could you clarify what you are trying to do?

For your second question....

Go to the second page of the event commands menu, and click on Scroll Map.

Then you just adjust what direction you want the screen to move (you want it to follow a character going off-screen, so whatever direction he or she is going), how far and how fast you want the screen to move. It's called 'panning'. You probably want the screen to move as fast as the character it's following, so check the character's speed first.

That's all. Good luck.
