What if it snowed in San Francisco?
I have recently downloaded a file entitled "Rpg Maker XP Postailty Knights Edition Enhanced".

I've been using RPG Maker for the PSX for as long as I've been making RPGs (none of which I ever actually finish >_x) but after reading that there were others of these types of games, I decided it was time for an upgrade and downloaded RPG Maker XP.

However, everything is suddenly complicated again. I was expecting a menu to go into different aspects of creation like in RPG Maker for the PSX, but instead I was greeted with a green screen, without much of an introduction.

I found the help menu without much difficulty, but it's in japanease so it doesn't help.

After a bit of fiddling, I found the database, but it looks like everything is already made, and there's nothing for me to do but click green and make it white.

The description of the program described it as generally user-friendly, but I haven't been able to do anything but change colors of squares and squint at japanease not-so-helpful-help files.

Is it supposed to be this complicated?

What I'm looking for is something where you can start from scratch without much difficulty, but this seems to be quite the opposite. Is there an easier version of the program out there somewhere?

Erm, you can easily extend it and/or whipe everything out.

Oh, you can download the english helpfile too. At the bottom of the download page.

What will that crazy ape do next?
if ur having trouble figuring out how to use the system u can check out one of the great tutorials we have in the tutorial database.  I don't know why the help file doesn't work, but I found the help file pretty useless anyway compared to the tutorials.

as for the database, just clear everything.  decrease the array sizes to 1 then re increase it to ur needs afterwards and everything will be gone.

I'm getting the hang of it okay...Tiles were pretty easy to figure out, and I think I have the layering down...I'm going through the monsters and stuff now, but I'm mainly just making a base and have no sense of game balance as of yet...most of the stuff is just copied and pasted presets with new names. Making animations is fun, though. Animating spells has always been my favorite part of making RPGs~ ^^
