Title: ITT:We talk about stuff
Post by: Acolyte on December 05, 2015, 01:00:04 AM
This is for all the people who frequent the forums, but never really chat in irc. Though if you do happen to frequent irc, feel free to post here anyway.

So yeah, talk about stuff. Introduce yourselves, yada yada.

Oh hey!  The regulars know me, but for those who don't, I'm Jules :ladyj:  I know nothing about game making and very little about life, but that doesn't stop me from putting my two cents in often. I have three grown children, cause I'm an old woman lol (41 - I know you're curious, it's ok ;])  I have a grandbaby on the way, he'll be here in April and I'm currently knitting and crocheting like a crazy woman. I hope my son and his wife don't hate me when I drop a ton of things off for him lol

We need a topic for this thread or it's gonna die out pretty quickly, the thing that keeps the IRC alive is that you guys hit a topic and chat on it for a bit, then you'll move on to the next. :)

It's ok, I get that a lot lol

I absolutely LOVED Jurrasic World, I went to the theater with Charlie to see it, which is something we rarely do. It takes a lot to get me to spend $7 (or more) to see a movie.  I just watched Home a few days ago on Netflix, absolutely adorable and totally funny. My favorite line from the entire movie is:

but I also liked:

If you haven't seen it yet, I totally recommend it. It's probably one of my favorite movies now, though I really have way too many favorites lol

Oh man that sounded wrong I meant because my mom is almost 15 years older and I never really thought about age and sorry I sounded like I was saying you look old but that's not what i meant oh god im sorry please  ;9

Lol, it's all good bud, no offense was taken. I'm a firm believer that age is just a number. The biggest reason I'm working on getting fit is because I want to be around another 40 years or so (at least). I have a lot more years of pestering you all in me :)

My mother would hate to think she was old. She's 43. She, too, has 3 children. Of which 2 are grown (28 - myself - and 23), and 1 which is getting there (16). Also a grandmammy, now (that's my fault).

Definitely not old is the point I'm trying to make. At least, not if that is anything to go on and I want to value my living status.

Hi.

I'm Ronald, a young dad/husband with 3 daughters (https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xat1/v/t1.0-9/12294913_826934102082_1311598780968954834_n.jpg?oh=b2e52ac7a3fae3af82b446a2028be307&oe=56D46A55), a couple games (http://rmrk.net/index.php?topic=50246) I'm working on and a fantasy book series (http://www.retrovertbooks.com/) I'm writing.

I've been around on RMRK off and on for several years. I love the RPG Maker and keep coming back to it for fun every so often (mostly for GIAW).

I'm a pastor (http://waysidechapel.org/who-we-are/our-team/) and video game player (but like, mostly old school games).

I like it here.

Aww, thanks!  I don't really think of myself as old, honestly. But when I was in my 20's I thought 40 was ancient (lol) so I guess that's why I refer to myself as old, since this site is full of YUNGINS   *shrugs*

Funny.. thought:

It's funny you should mention that Pac. I was thinking earlier about how, when I was younger, I would see people who are my age now who were "acting like kids". That's the way I thought of it, and I recall thinking to myself that they should grow up and act their age. And now here I am, that age, and honestly having the time of my life. My kids are, for the most part, out of the home. I have several hobbies that I absolutely love and some that my husband has foisted on me (hello chickens ).  I play games, I still sing along with songs (wherever I may find myself, I don't care), dance along in my car, and honestly if the mood strikes me I'm liable to bust a move in public :ladyj:   I'm finally at the point in my life that I really truly don't care if people stare at me. I am going to enjoy life, no one gets out of it alive anyways, may as well have a blast while I'm here, right?

The thing is, if younger me could see me now, she would be all judgy and thinking I should grow up. I would really like to tell younger me to stick a sock in it and don't be so serious. Growing up is over rated  :drsword:

The only good episode of season 9 was episode 11.
Season 9 episode 11 is now one of my favorite Doctor Who episodes.

Too bad the rest was dum bum garbage.

Ok, before I start, I enjoy all 6 of the star wars films, but the originals (4, 5, and 6) are better IMHO
yes

Uh, 4, 5, and 6 are better than the prequels cause:

I mean, do you really even NEED another reason?

If so:
1) Acting: Not as good in the prequels
2) Speaking of: Chemistry. Han and Leia made me believe, Anakin and Padme.. not so much.
3) Again: Deaths got you right in the feels. I don't think I cared about a single death in the prequels.
4) Costumes: hello halloween, when think Star Wars, what comes to your mind to dress up as? A senator perhaps?.....
5) PLOT TWIST:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6JnGTXCkHA" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6JnGTXCkHA</a>

Yes, you know this, because everybody talks about it and now it's a meme and you grow up knowing it. But step back in time, if you will, and imagine yourself just seeing this for the first time. Show me a moment in the Prequels that had that same mind blowing effect.
Title: Re: ITT:We talk about stuff
Post by: pacdiggity on December 12, 2015, 11:44:23 AM
episode one is tragic because it's only a few steps away from being a good movie, but as it is it's a pile of trash.

step 1) more maul. he has such a damn cool design it hurts that his character was thrown away so readily. if he didn't die at the end and continued to be a threat throughout episode two, and maybe three, that creates an emotional arc for him and Obi-Wan. here's the key events maul should have in the trilogy:
step 2) pick a main character. the movie doesn't have one, and it's a problem for 2 and 3 as well. the main character should be Obi-Wan, and we should see Qui Gon as a master-like figure instead of the main character, like Ben in episode 4.
step 3) take out george lucas and all his dumbass annoying crap like jar jar and jabba and freakin kid anakin and the space battle at the end, and replace all of that crap with scenes that build the characters to actually have characters. get someone who can take criticism to direct the film.
step 4) change naboo to alderaan. it adds further depth to the series without compromising anything.
step 5) nobody gives a shit about the trade federation and the senate and the treaty and the politics or any of that crap.
step 6) fix the lightsaber duels - in the original trilogy the duels are so insanely awesome because of their meanings and how much emotion was in them. instead of neat choreography and fancy effects, why not establish some kind of deeper meaning to the characters' actions

i don't think we have the time to talk about episode two, but Empire is without doubt the best star wars film.

but yeah they blow the show right out of the water with the intricacies and thematic material. there is SO much that can and should be read in to. there are so many mysteries and loose threads that it's like diving down the rabbit hole.

i really wanna talk about who jon snow's mother is (or, you know, who i think it is and why) but doing so without permission is generally considered taboo.

R+L? =o
as compelling as that theory is, it has certain holes that point to a different direction. i'll put a cheeky little clue in this here spoiler, see what you can figure from that. i just don't want to spoil things D:
Spoiler for:
Firstly, consider that in Eddard IX, AGoT, Ned mentions that he hadn't thought about Rhaegar in years. Years. That would be impossible if he'd been raising his son, plain and simple. So, if Jon isn't Rhaegar's, whose is he? Well, here's a really cool literary connection between Jon Snow and a certain Dornish house.

In Eddard X, AGoT, Ned has his famous fever dream about the Tower of Joy, when he tried to protect and save his sister Lyanna. He recalls a battle outside the tower where he and six of his friends (7 people) fight against 3 knights of the kingsguard - Ser Oswell Whent, Ser Gerold Hightower, and Ser Arthur Dayne.
In Jon IV, AGoT, there is another fight where a precious person is being fought over - Alliser Thorne pits 7 recruits against Jon Snow, Grenn and Pyp, and they have to protect Samwell Tarly. There are some crazy ridiculous connections between these two fights - particularly between the kingsguard knights and Jon's team.

Ser Oswell is of House Whent of Harrenhal - Harrenhal and House Whent are frequently associated with bats throughout the series; the sigil of House Whent is nine bats on a yellow field. So we have Ser Oswell, who is associated with bats.
The Lord-Commander of the Kingsguard was Ser Gerold Hightower. The Hightowers are shrouded in mystery, and they practice sorcery and dark arts. What happens in Oldtown stays in Oldtown. What's important is that Ser Gerold's nickname was "the White Bull." So we have Ser Gerold, who is associated with bulls.
Ser Arthur Dayne was the Sword of the Morning, a title always held by a great knight of House Dayne, along with their Valyrian greatsword Dawn. What's interesting here is that Arthur's sister, Ashara, seemed to have an affection for Brandon Stark (Ned's brother). So we have Ser Arthur, who was Sword of the Morning.

In Jon's fight at Castle Black, on his team are Pyp and Grenn. In the same chapter, shortly after the fight, Pyp is described as having the ears of a bat. So we have Pyp, who is associated with bats.
Grenn's nickname, as given by Alliser Thorne, was Aurochs. An Auroch is a specific type of oxen, or bull. So we have Grenn, who is associated with bulls.

If we have Ser Oswell Whent and Pyp being associated with bats, and Ser Gerold Hightower and Grenn being associated with bulls, that screams that there is a connection between Ser Arthur Dayne and Jon Snow.
Spoiler for:
Is Jon Snow the next Sword of the Morning, the heir to House Dayne? Are there two fire and ice couples? Rhaegar + Lyanna, Brandon + Ashara.
Spoiler for:
Well, if Jon is the child of Brandon Stark and Ashara Dayne, that begs the question: whose child is Rhaegar and Lyanna's? Well, it turns out we know exceedingly little about the childhood of...
Spoiler for:
Daenerys Targaryen. Take in to account that when Ned thinks about the promise he made to Lyanna, he feels as though he failed in keeping it. If the promise were to protect Jon, then he hadn't failed at all; Jon was safe at the Wall. If the promise were to protect Daenerys though, then he absolutely failed: just before he thought this, Robert and the small council agreed to assassinate Daenerys. Therefore, Lyanna's promise being about Daenerys makes much more sense.

ASoIaF is my favourite piece of fiction ever and I like to think I know a great deal about it. If anyone else in interested in discussing it, be it fanboying out or crackpot theories, please hit me up.

Interesting!  I am not totally sold on R+L either. I do think it's an interesting proposition.  I really need to go back and read them all again. It's been a few years now, and I've watched the show in the interim. Sometimes my brain gets the two muddled.

Oh I tell everyone I know who watches the show that they MUST read the books. There is SO MUCH MORE in the books.  I prefer the books. But I do like how the show is developing its own characters and plot lines that aren't in the books. So you can enjoy both :ladyj:
