the dress is blue and black, no question about it, the website it's sold off of confirms it
to some people at first look, especially dictated by the color they see around the picture, it's white and brown, but it's a matter of the lighting and an optical illusion

I don't understand how a picture with poor lighting is an optical illusion. It just looks like it's a photo taken with a bad camera. The picture on Amazon is clearly blue and black though.

I see on Amazon the reviews are "confused" about the colors. Is this just another one of those things where everybody makes joke reviews on Amazon? Am I just dumb today? I don't understand.

I saw the dress as white and gold the first time I looked at it. Then I read the article that accompanied it, looked at it again and saw it as blue and black. I had recently watched this episode of Brain Game, so that made sense to me lol. It's definitely blue and black :)

but like yeah i see white and gold, and when you go in to photoshop and pick the colours they're white and gold, i understand and appreciate the fuckery at hand here but it's a crap photo to begin with

I really want to be able to see it as white/gold but I don't think it's possible. I mean, knowing it's black and blue is kind of reaffirming but I wish I knew what everyone else was seeing.

The pictures of it being sold as blue and black on the website also show other color options being available. One of which is gold and white. At the least the picture I saw did. So my conclusion is that both are correct.

But yeah. I have no idea how this got to be such a big story. Kind of fun to see who sees what colors though. I can't bring myself to see anything but white and gold, even when operating under the assumption that there is only 1 color scheme and that scheme is blue and black.

I can't even remotely begin to see how the dress is white and gold. Not once did it ever even come close to looking that way to me. o.o It just looks blue and brownish black to me.

Blue and Black: Your retina’s cones are more high functioning, and this results in your eyes doing subtractive mixing. White and Gold: Our eyes don’t work well in dim light so our retinas rods see white, and this makes them less light sensitive, causing additive mixing, (that of green and red), to make gold.

I'm actually legitimately curious about this.
Out of those seeing gold and white, who wears glasses? *raises hand* and for what? For me I'm nearsighted.

I was given glasses because I'm nearsighted, but I never wear them.

I wear glasses, have extremely terrible vision without them, and am nearsighted...and I can't work out "white" or "gold" at all. o.o 'Looks very blue and blackish brown, to me and my sister (who has even worse vision than me). My mom, however, saw white and gold. :p
I don't think it correlates with vision, but rather the adjustment to dim lighting. I didn't think there was a difference before this, honestly. o.o

I even took off my glasses and still see blue and black. Not even close to white and gold. AHHHH

:halo: I feel like I'm being trolled reading this thread. I see white and gold... I don't have any problems seeing, though I really don't like going outside without sunglasses because I can't take bright light very well. Maybe it really is a lighting thing... Never thought I had a color blindness due to light sensitivity... Kinda random.

So...out of curiosity...
What kind of gold and white are you guys seeing? Is it, like, pearly white and mustard gold? Or like, gray white and metalic gold? :B
I see a brownish black (mostly brown) and dull, light blue B)

I saw it as an off-white in bad lighting and a murky sort of goldish brown
also wear glasses btw

I see it as slightly smokey off-white and the gold is a slightly towards a light-brown paper bag shade of gold if that makes any sense.
I have a huge light sensitivity that's exacerbated by certain medications as well. So, while I don't understand it, it may very well indeed by light adjustment.

It's barely black, even to the black/blue viewers. o.o It's, like, a dull brown that I can tell is supposed to be black, because of the lighting. It's not quite gold to me, though. As for the white...I can't even begin to see it. It looks pure blue to me. O.O
I guess you guys are just seeing the colors lighter or something. B) That's pretty cool.

Oh my god this isn't even interesting. That gif of the spinning ballerina where you can trick yourself into seeing it turn different directions was more interesting than this dumb dress ever will be.

At least I could change my perception of the ballerina's rotation at will. I just want to be able to do the same thing for this. Even in the XKCD comic, both dresses look black and blue to me.

Are the two drawings really the same one but with a diiferent background? It looks recolored to me. The middle bit of the dress is the first image of it that I saw where I actually saw it being a little blue.

The dress colors are exactly the same. It's the same principle spriters use to make it look like there are more colors in a sprite than there actually are.
For example, most of the streetfighter characters with blond hair reuse their skin colors.

You should look up some articles on color theory. It's really fascinating stuff.

back in the good ol' days of color limitation ;]
I do a lot of Fire Emblem 7 ROM modding, and creating characters is a pain in the buttocks because of the color limits. You have 16 colors, not including the one that gets changed to be transparent in game. So really, you have 15 colors to make and shade your characters. o.o
