I'd be okay with it. The series would benefit from something earth-shatteringly different like that.

Either way, I really, really like that art direction. I like that Link's not wearing green (is that Link?). I like that the hairstyle is different. I like that Link looks younger. I like the psuedo-sci-fi stuff. I hope it doesn't suck.

Skyward Sword made a pretty decent break from convention with that ending, really going in to some batshit crazy lore stuff. I hope this game breaks convention even more.

edit: In case you missed the trailer.

And apparently the word is that while the camera angles in the trailer aren't in the game, the trailer is running in real time what we'll actually be seeing.

Not that it's any real surprise because while the Wii U isn't as powerful as PS4/X1/PC (lol) and the graphics in the trailer look beautiful, it probably isn't all that intensive. But I've seen a lot of people claim this is one of those "THE TRAILER LOOKS BETTER THAN WHAT THE GAME WILL BE LIKE" things.

Link confirmed male. I'm guessing that's Zelda in the trailer.

That's definitely been the trend, lately, and I'm very happy about it. We're finally past the point where all/most videogames use pre-rendered cutscenes, and well in to the point where most games do "cutscenes" in real time, in-game (Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, DMC, the list is endless). I'm glad to see Nintendo following suit.

Although, Nintendo's always been like that, haven't they? They've never been one to use many pre-rendered cutscenes in their finished games. Trailers, maybe...? I dunno.

But the whole thing with the Watch_Dogs trailer looking significantly better than the game actually did at release probably has a lot of people very wary of that kind of thing right now.

That didn't confirm that Link is male in the game. Aonuma-san-chan reportedly just said it might not be Link in the trailer, which, if it's not, doesn't really matter because she deliberately looks like Link.

Aonuma is illuminati
Title: Re: Link's a girl in the new zelda
Post by: Irock on June 11, 2014, 04:35:49 AM
Anyway, it's really nice to see Aonuma (the guy infamous for never beating the first Zelda and thinking it's too confusing) embracing the series' open world roots with this game and speaking out against handholding. (http://www.polygon.com/2013/10/12/4829872/the-legend-of-zelda-a-link-between-worlds-eiji-aonuma-interview-nycc-2013)

Skyward Sword was, in my opinion, the worst official Zelda game I've ever played. It was way too linear, the sky was empty, the world was unconnected and essentially comprised of three areas accessed via a glorified level select screen, it was too handholdy and it was too easy.

This one has the potential to be good.

Aonuma is learning.

It had some great music, but I didn't find most of it to be enjoyable, despite being orchestrated. I'd say it was below average as far as Zelda goes.

The artstyle tries to mimic impressionist art, but falls short of the real deal by a long shot. I think it looks bland a lot of the time and only occasionally is it pretty. I do prefer more stylistic aesthetics in games, but I don't really dig Skyward Sword's implementation.

Also my video's on Kotaku for some reason

It should be renamed Legend of Link, its much better rather then Zelda. Sometimes people just mistakenly name Link with Zelda :P

Without going into the dark past and maybe why she thinks like this, I'll just say quite a lot of Patricia's opinions have logic to them, but flawed and in some cases completely over-blown.

The motion controls often register incorrectly or don't register at all.

Many of the enemies are boring games of simon says.

Almost every sky island is empty, aside from treasure chests which you can't access unless you activate them from the surface. Why not just put the chests on the surface instead of forcing the player to tediously fly to them? What does that add?

There's barely any exploration.

The side-quests seem like something you'd expect to find in an MMO.

All of the The Imprisoned fights are annoying and devoid of fun.

The game outright tells you the solution to puzzles.

The harp is awful.

The upgrades in the game are pretty much useless considering the game's so easy (if you disregard the flaws in the controls, which adds some bad difficulty).

There are some good nuggets thrown in there, like the time travel crystals, which were a great imaginative mechanic, but overall it was absolutely a bad game and it makes me uneasy to think that Nintendo could make something like that. Players need to raise their standards. We aren't going to get better video games otherwise.

This looks great though. I'm very excited for it, and I hope with all my heart they don't build their game on a weak passing gimmick with clunky controls this time. Zeldas should strive to be timeless. The first three were. Let's hope the sixth will too.

You're both right.

Also, any comparison to Skyrim is justified because Aonuma practically echoed Todd Howard when he said "See that mountain? You can climb that mountain." I wonder if that was on purpose.

This might be revealing my ignorance of some canon, but how exactly are you counting that would make this one only the sixth Zelda? Also, does your "first three" not include Majora's Mask or Wind Waker? Because I would dispute either claim.

4. Ocarina of time
5. Majora's mask
6. Wind Waker
7. Twilight princess
8. skyward sword

That's pretty much the problem, though; people in general have been fed shit for so long that they'll only accept shit, and anything else will just raise eyebrows.

Also, my favorite Zelda is still Link's Awakening.

I suppose I should've made it clear that I was speaking of the 3D Zelda games. I also should've reminded myself that such things as 'timelessness' are opinions.

The 'first three' I referred to were OoT, MM, and WW, all games I consider brilliant.

And this made me soooooooo glad I bought the Wii U.

Can't wait for it.
And I'm excited to see where the new direction goes.

It was not a let down for me, but I cried inside a little each time the mechanics was used poorly. XD

There was an open world Zelda game 28 years ago that let you climb a mountain. It was called The Legend of Zelda.

Skyrim did not invent climbing mountains in an open world. It's not even the first Elder Scrolls games to let you do that.

At any rate, in the world of LoZ, if it is possible to create a wide-exploring field, they generally should.

Daaaamn you look so bad right now tho

Got no gamer cred

Consider this.
28yrs ago was the first LoZ game created.
I am nearly 25yrs.
My first gaming system was the SNES.
That means my first LoZ experience was A Link to the Past when I was 3yrs and old enough to remember things, which my first memories of ANY video game was the LoZ series.

It's my favorite series.

I think that's enough 'gamer cred' if you absolutely love a fictional story, and would love to continue to see how it grows as you yourself ages.

Wouldn't you agree?
