Title: Steam Stuff
Post by: Kokowam on December 20, 2011, 01:48:41 AM
I guess share all the things you buy on Steam over the holidays on here? :D So far I've bought "Bunch of Heroes" and "Orcs Must Die!" because they seem interesting and they also contribute to the event that's going on right now. I'm thinking I should buy the Portal bundle for $8, but I'm not sure ._.

Post by: SirJackRex on December 20, 2011, 02:03:03 AM
The store was pretty much broken earlier, so I only got to see what was on sale. Even that wasn't great because I kept getting differing prices and discount rates on the front and on the individual pages.

I'm contemplating Portal 2, Metro, Orcs Must Die, and Bunch of Heroes, but I wasn't really taken by the Orcs demo. The only certain buys currently on my to-buy list are Fallout New Vegas, RAGE, and Civ V. Hopefully I can snag Civ and F:NV at 75%, and Rage at 50%. :D

Did you get two gifts from the first pile achievement? I only got a coupon, but the wording implies two gifts.

Getting Portal bundle. Right now. I've been meaning to get this legit.

I got excited because I got a -25% any one Valve title from one of the achievements, but it only works from January 2nd to March 1st. :( Can't use it on things discounted right now. </3

Yhea me too hah. I really want it to stack with Portal 2.

I'll probably just trade it away at a later date.

I bought Bunch of Heroes. It was pretty terrible.
I've only played the survival mode, and it's not bad as a survival kind of thing like the type you play on your iTouch. But it's a pretty high price - even during this sale - for a game like that (idk what the campaign is like). I just wish there was some way of upgrading yourself and not just sticking to the same weapons. I can't really see myself playing it over and over again especially with how poorly the game itself is designed, with death timers going up past 1600 seconds.

tl;dr - Game isn't well designed, but it's okay but definitely not worth its cost.
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Sales
Post by: chewey on December 20, 2011, 06:28:54 AM
The camera just isn't very good. It has a hard time not wobbling all over the place. It makes the game uncomfortable to play.

Although, I did have some problems with the way the difficulty ramped up.

Do we? I don't know what games we're both really into. I've probably gotten into a lot of different things since I was last here too.

Anyway, here's my steam profile

Post by: Holkeye on December 20, 2011, 06:31:04 AM
I got it because I saw TotalBiscuit play it with the Yogscast guys, and it looked like a lot of fun. I think you need multiplayer to enjoy it. But yeah, its a simple twinstick shooter, so I'm not really expecting a whole lot.
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Sales
Post by: chewey on December 20, 2011, 06:40:07 AM
Maybe, man. The camera thing might bother me more than it'll bother others. I get frustrated by these kind of things a lot, I think.

It probably is better with friends, so long as the difficulty doesn't ramp up. There are a lot of enemies that each take a lot of bullets to kill already. I'd rather play Renegade Ops some more though. Everybody should play that game. It's only 25% off now, but I have to imagine it'll be reduced some more some time during the sale.
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Sales
Post by: Holkeye on December 20, 2011, 07:10:43 AM
It looks like modern Jackal! I'll have to check it out, but I'll wait to see if it drops down any more during the sale. Nice rec~
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Sales
Post by: chewey on December 20, 2011, 07:49:43 AM
Yeah, it's pretty similar to Jackal in a few ways. The game feels great, better than any other dual stick shooter I've played. It's made by the Just Cause 2 guys, which might mean something to you.

I just found out they just released a Winter themed campaign as DLC for it. There's an achievement for it related to this present thing they're doing, so it's pretty certain that it'll be a daily sale item.

holy shit last day's deals overlap for four hours. so I think I'll snag Orcs Must Die and maybe Dungeons of Dredmor. Anyone know anything about the latter?

edit: bought Orcs and Double Fine pack. Always wanted to play Psychonauts, and Costume Quest seems like a nice little game too.

Costume Quest's pretty cool, though it would frequently hitch up when loading scenes when I played it on the PS3 and that was really annoying. It's probably not a problem on the PC, though I wouldn't know.
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Sales
Post by: SirJackRex on December 20, 2011, 11:14:31 PM
Oh. I guess I'll find out later today. Orcs Must Die! is pretty shallow so far, but fun enough for 3 bucks and a -50% SpaceChem coupon which will probably be useless in the coming weeks...

Thanks for the recommendation Holk. I really love more casual roguelikes, so I'll pick it up tomorrow when the new dailies hit.
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Sales
Post by: Holkeye on December 21, 2011, 01:24:48 PM
I also recommend The Binding of Isaac. It's $2.49 right now, and it is my favorite indie game of the year. It mixes old-school Zelda dungeons with roguelikes, twin stick shooters, and nightmarish imagery. It was made by Edmund McMillen, who is half of Team Meat. Please buy this game, because I want to see more things being made by him. He's a really cool guy, and I've been talking to him on and off for a while now about some stuff that I'm planning.

Dredmore is amazing. Its one of my favorite games of the year.

Agreed, it was a really good roguey. Really rewarding and fun to jump into, heavily recommend it.
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Sales
Post by: SirJackRex on December 21, 2011, 05:03:37 PM
SMB is one of my favorite games, but I just couldn't get into The Binding of Isaac. The Zelda Rougelike Twin-stick gimmick didn't click with me. But I'll back the recommendation too. It's an inventive never-ending dungeon crawler by a team that deserves more support.

I also recommend that everybody picks up Psychonauts while it's still a (hidden) daily deal at $2.50. The Witcher is also $2.50, and it's among the best RPGs of the decade.

edit: So new deals up. Nothing that really interests me, but I'm getting Dredmore (is its DLC worth getting?). I might get Defense Grid because I've been on a TD kick lately, but I don't feel like dropping another $2.50 on something I've played many times over. Is there anything really noteworthy of this game?
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Sales
Post by: Kokowam on December 21, 2011, 07:50:19 PM
Lol I got a -40% on The Witcher 2.

I'm thinking of buying Defense Grid and all the DLC, not sure yet...
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Sales

The Witcher 2 is cheaper still on GOG, always has been.
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Sales
Post by: Holkeye on December 21, 2011, 10:23:07 PM
Defense Grid is about as standard a TD as you can get. Its just really pretty.
The DLC for Dredmore is like, 7 new classes, some new enemies, and a few new floors. If you like the game, the extra stuff is worth it, and its $1.50 right now.

Yeah so far I haven't been too interested in these games. I was really thinking of Blur too, but I heard it's a somewhat bad PC port, and as far as combat racers go, I just bought MK7...but I just got an invite to Tribes: Ascend Beta! So even if my certain-buys don't hit dailies anytime soon, I'm all good B)

It's almost UT99/2K4 good. I think there's a beta referral program, so I'll see if I can get you an invite Holk.

Bought RAGE, thinking of EYE. Can't wait to download 21GB! I finally got myself 7 Coal. Crafted into a fucking -50% Virtua Tennis coupon. My friend laughed at me and told me that one coal is worth one reclaimed metal. I'm damn-near livid right now.

Renegade Ops is $3 on Amazon. It'll register on Steam.

Title: Re: Steam Holiday Sales
Post by: Holkeye on December 23, 2011, 09:13:03 PM
Ok, so I have a crazy conspiracy theory:

Valve is going to announce HL3 after this sale. Hear me out on this. Along side the shirts that devs were wearing, and the voice actors who claimed to be working on it, I've noticed something strange about the holiday sale pics: There are HL Lambdas all over them. The Brink one yesterday was the first one I noticed, and there was another one, too. Today, there's one in the "Steam characters" picture, in the yellow guy's chain. I'm going to keep a look out for more.
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Sales
Post by: SirJackRex on December 23, 2011, 09:56:02 PM
You're not alone. I was thinking the exact same thing.

Apparently the robot (Wheatly?) from Portal 2's speech at that award show that shall not be named referenced a new half-life. There have been some other HL things popping up in Valve stuff too, a lot of it seems really far-fetching and desperate, but now they kind of seem valid.

Some notes:
Frozen Synapse is absolutely worth three bucks for TWO copies. Easily one of the best games of the year.
Greed Corp is pretty fun. Worth the $2.50 if you want a casual strategy. (It's not a daily, but it has an achievement today.)
Audiosurf is audiosurf. You should get it if you have lots of CDs and music on your computer.
RAGE is shooting bliss, with some really great car combat too. It's a pure shooter with some rpg gimmicks and racing, so don't expect Fallout 3 or even Borderlands (though in my opinion it's much better than both). Almost like an open-world Doom but with less-good level design? And damn, those sewers are amazing.

also tomorrow amazon is having Civ V GOTY download for $10.99, and it activates on steam. Today, Just Cause 2 is $2.50 iirc and Deus Ex HR is $9.99.
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Sales
Post by: Holkeye on December 24, 2011, 10:11:29 AM
Also, those Amazon downloads get you a $5 credit toward one of the top games of 2011, after the holidays.

Rage is really good. One of the best shooters I've ever played, but to compare it to Fallout or Borderlands is doing a disservice to all of those series. It is nothing like them, so you can't really compare. It is a shooter, through and through.

yep I agree. The "rpg" in it is nothing more than the "Rpg" in a typical Zelda game but people are up in arms about how shallow of an rpg it is when it isn't at all an rpg. I also see a lot of people passing up on it because they think it's a Fallout or Borderlands knock-off. It's a shame. The only faults I can give it are enemy count and open space in the levels, and those are only minor complaints. (It's also pretty easy even on hard, but I only just past the first Mutant Bash.)
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Sales

Overlord Pack, an action take on Pikmin, is a steal at $4.99. I put at least a couple dozen hours into Overlord, and hadn't even touched the expansion pack's dungeons. It's a really great game.

Arkham Asylum is mostly phenomenal. I recommend it.

Has anyone played Alice: Madness Returns? It looks really good.

Can anyone give me a hand? I bought Fable: TLC for $5 and when I run it, I get to my profile. When it loads for the game to begin, It says, "Runtime Error" and google isn't helpin' any with my prob. Anyone got any ideas? (btw, What Assassin's Creed should get?)
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Sales
Post by: SirJackRex on December 26, 2011, 06:23:03 AM
I'm not sure. Run-time Error seems pretty broad. What's your OS? I played through Fable on XP fine. Try running the game in XP compatibility mode. You can also try "Verifying Integrity of Game Cache," found via right-click-> properties in Steam Library. Last resort would be to re-install.

I think assassin's creed is really boring actually. I've only played 2, but everything about it is so automated; it's almost anti-participatory. I really dislike that quality in games, but they're not really bad games at all and they do seem to have a lot of content. I hear 2 is the best from most people, which is why I picked it up, but Brotherhood and Revelations have some legitimately awesome looking multi-player.

Though really, wait to buy any games until they have a daily deal. If they don't, then you're not losing anything but a few days.

How is Rock of Ages? I heard it's like a tower defense + Super Monkey Ball. Probably going to pick up Bulletstorm and Painkiller Black Edition.

And what's up with Bastion being discounted by 66% but being $5.09 (a publisher thing?)? The $0.09 isn't the issue, I'm just curious.
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Sales
Post by: chewey on December 27, 2011, 04:42:36 AM
Rock of Ages is fine, but it could have been executed better. It's worth checking out for the price, but only if you can find somebody to play with.

The aim of the game is to break into the keep at the end of your enemy's path. The kind of lame thing is that it always takes three strikes. It might take more if you're especially terrible, but it'll never be less. So basically you'll always want to launch your ball as soon as possible rather than spend some more time building your defenses, because that's never a better use of your time. It's very fast paced but not very strategical as a result. The ball rolling is pretty simple and easy too, not nearly as challenging as a game like Super Monkey Ball.

Bulletstorm is pretty fun. I finished the campaign, at least. The final boss is a QTE though, which is really stupid.
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Sales
Post by: Esmeralda on December 27, 2011, 10:23:03 AM
Actually since we played they seem to have changed ball damage mechanics a bit. It's entirely possible to end a match in three strikes still but if you're going for keys/money you'll be looking at 4-5. Towers are still kinda redundant though.

Yeah, the gameplay doesn't vary itself up a lot, that's indeed true.  I enjoy the game mostly for the twisted characters and monsters, and at least the samey gameplay is designed well enough.

Then again, I also adored American McGee's Alice, so I suppose I'm biased.

What Fallout: New Vegas DLC is worth it? I heard one was bad but I can't remember which. And does Civ V GOTY include all of the DLC?

also I recommend Command & Conquer 3. I had a lot of fun with that game, even if one of the best strategies is turtle tanks and assault with a shit ton of orca.

Tomorrow's likely a recap. If Portal 2 goes up I'll probably buy it...I regret not getting X3 War Pack when it was a daily, because I saw some in-game footage the day after and it looked real groovy. I'll probably pick it up tomorrow too.

bought and fired up Sandbox Universe, fucking thing crashes to desktop twice on startup, and then when I finally get it to run it doesn't even render shit, and now I can't even get it to load. nothankyou.jpg Shame because I really really want to play it.

Is the X series really that good? Because I traded away my DotA2 for the X Superbox because it's worth significantly more than DotA2 is now, and I'm wondering if I should unpack it or trade it in the future.

And I want to buy LA Noire, AC1, AC2, and AC:Brotherhood for $35, but I don't want to ask my parents if I could spend another $40 on games... Granted, it's my money, but still.

I've never played an X game before, but I really dig space games and want to get a sim. X3 looks a bit like Descent and (offline) Eve from what I saw, which is pretty swell in my book.

I probably won't buy X3 now because I picked up two copies of Civ V Goty. (Played like 12 hours almost straight since yesterday; this game is bad news for me.) Though I still have $2.11 balance on Steam, and I'm leaning strongly toward Portal 2 for my last purchase. Also do you know how much X3 War Pack is worth in coal/games/coupons, or a place I can find out at?

but I don't want to ask my parents if I could spend another $40 on games... Granted, it's my money, but still.
I thought I was alone. Tears of sympathy, my friend.

Mmmm... well for games, people tend to do a "this game is worth its price so the sum of your offered games' prices must equal this one" unless someone's specifically looking for something so it'll vary.

A lot of people don't like coupons. They're mostly things tacked on to make offers look nicer unless you have a Bethesda/Skyrim/Ubisoft coupon or stuff like that.

As for coal... Coal has been highly inflated as far as I remember. Coal quickly became $0.50 each, and it eventually inflated further to whatever it is now especially since you can't really craft it for anything worthwhile. But it's, at the best, $0.50 each, so you'd need a fair amount of coal.

EDIT: I swear to God... these past 6 months quickly inflated the net worth of my Steam account.

Okay, recycling this topic because I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Majesty 2 because it's on sale, and I have exactly $4.99 in my Steam Wallet and I was wondering if it was worth getting the pack thingy.

Is SPAZ any good then?

No, but on another note, Ys: The Oath In Felghana just got put up, which is a sick game. I love the Ys games, and this one is probably my favorite. They even added achievements, if that's your thing, and its only $15. I hope they put the other ones up, too. That would be rad.

Shit, I thought Ys was a niche Strategy RPG that I played a long time ago but didn't really care for. The Oath in Fleghana looks really, really fun. Man, I think I'm gonna have to pick it up now. :D

SPAZ is seems nice but it very slow. As such, I have played little of it. I liked what I did play, but man it does drag itself.

Has anyone played Kingdoms of Amalur? Should I get it now, not get it at all, or wait for it to go on sale?

It's a good game, not a blockbuster or anything but it's easy to get into.

My brother played that game solely to laugh at it.

I would say it's not very good. The quests are really bad.

If anyone knows anything about "Hack, Slash, Loot," is it a dungeon crawler (or whatever the genre's called) worth getting (ie. if it's innovative or just a solidly executed or etc.)?

EDIT: I read one thread that kinda completely turned me off from this game. The unlocking of classes is linked with more playtime, but the way it works is that it's linked with the number of your deaths. Unlocking based not on merit but on something so stupid is such poor design - in my opinion - that it doesn't seem like a game worth buying. The logic is ostensibly to have people who are bad at the game playing at the same standard as others, but it's dumb.

The game is part of the latest indie royale bundle, just so you know.

Right, "roguelike" was the genre. And yeah, I forgot I had Dredmore so I'll probably get around to that someday...

wow this post is probably your most coherent so far.

that said I don't think portal 2 will be free anytime soon, it's too new.

but a half-life with a 3 in it better come before any other valve series gets a 3.

Well technically Counter-Strike is getting a third installment.

Otherwise yeah I don't care about any other new Valve game at the moment just finish HL3 ffs.

Also noteworthy is that Dark Souls is coming to PC and likely to Steam because Namco's latest PC release (Ridge Racer Unbound) was put on Steam.

The same thing will happen as when Source came out. Some people will say it isn't as good as Source, and the 1.6ers will still play 1.6.

Its an expansion. If you don't have Arcania, it won't work.
