Once upon a time, the world fell prey to a cruel demon. Azazel The Fallen ravaged the lands, leaving misery and death in its wake. A group of young people banded together and traveled the world in search of a way to defeat him. They forged friendships, found true love and struggled with the possibility of betrayal in their midst. In six short months, they developed extraordinary strength and skills they did not know they possessed. When they finally met Azazel on the battlefield, they fought with glory and pride. As the hero delivered the mortal blow, the world went quiet, barely daring to breathe. Without their leader, the demon armies retreated back into the night. At last, the world rejoiced.

It has been fifteen years since Azazel fell. The world has changed and its people moved on. Alistair is now trying to live a normal life, tucked away in a small, sleepy village. But a casual visit from an old acquaintance threatens to propel him back into a world of adventure - whether he likes it or not!

Embark on a journey to explore the world and the unique perspective of what happens to said world once the fairytale of might and magic is over.

About the world of Caeta:
The world of Caeta (pronounced SEH- tta)  is comprised of five major continents: Andras, Ahden, Geldion, Vega and the Maia islands. With the exception of Maia, which is a democratic independent republic, the continents are ruled by a  monarchy (diarchy in the case of Andras). Since the appearance and consequent death of Azazel, the world has been living in a time of world peace, and free from political intrigue.

While both modern and futuristic technology can be found in various areas of the world, the majority of the population prefers to live a simpler existence that is in harmony with nature. In the past five years, it's become trendy for licensed mages (or those with magical predilections) to rely heavily on technology. This is largely due to theories that the mana pool of a person is limited and should only be used in the "worst case" scenario. This is a stark difference with the mages from pre-Azazel era, who used magic at all times - even while asleep.

Religion plays a major level in the personal life of some people, but Caeta is primarily henotheistic in nature. Most towns and villages will have one patron deity, but their worship won't be enforced. Patron deities are chosen by the perceived natural blessings of the area where the towns are located. For example, the patron deity of Par Tillian is Damia, goddess of plenty. Even though Par Tillian is located in the hot desert, its citizens are blessed to have a constant source of pure drinking water via the mountains located just north of the town.

(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi242.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff267%2Flunarea_album%2FGames%2FTUAH%2FAlistair.png&hash=f5e92ff4d36cfd2255a9cfed7127ea8460058289) Alistair Leblanc  ~ Age: 32 ~ Occupation: Bartender of a tavern in a small town
It was Alistair's sword that dealt the mortal blow to Azazel. He never truly enjoyed the praise and attention given to the great heroes, thus he spent a few years wandering Caeta before finally settling in a small village on the fringes of civilization.
His idealist and impulsive nature led him into many adventures and sticky situations in the past, but the years have turned him into a more prudent and thoughtful man. Though he never received a formal education, he is intelligent and well-read.
He takes life in moderation, so he is a man without vices.

Cordelia grew up hearing the stories about Azazel's fall and the bravery of Alistair and his companions. Like many of the younger Caeta inhabitants, she hasn't been exposed to harshness or violence in life.
Idealistic and naive, she has a knack of getting herself in trouble. She quickly developed an infatuation with Alistair, after he saved her from a monster. In her eyes, Alistair is a knight in shining armor. Much to her disappointment, Cordelia's sweetness and generosity remind Alistair of Lillian, which has led him to be short-tempered and grouchy around her.

As one of the countless orphaned children, Penelope grew up sheltered by the church. Unlike other children, she developed a fascination with the priest life and requested to join the clergy. She took up her studies with zeal and unorthodox organized discipline. She has a natural predilection for healing magic, though she is most interested in plant-based salves and naturalistic healing.
Penelope values her logic and intellect, often dismissing or ignoring her emotions. She can be counted on as a voice of reason, and follows a strict moral code.
She is originally forced to join Alistair by her matron, Diana. She quickly grows to like and respect him as a leader.

Azazel era was particularly difficult for mages, as they were often easily sensed by the demon armies. As a result, anyone with the potential to tame and use magic was quickly recruited by the academy. During those times of uncertainty and fear, the academy frequently traveled from place to place. This life gave Claudia both the formal education of the academic setting and the multicultural know-how of everyday life. This life also gave her a thirst for adventure, leading to her penchant for chaos and disregard of rules and laws.
Beneath her wild and rebellious exterior, Claudia is a thoughtful and intelligent woman. Her magical potential is very high, but she lacks the discipline needed to excel in her studies. She initially joins Alistair as a way to get good grades effortlessly, but she sticks around for her love of adventure.

It's great to see you creating a game. I enjoy this.

Thank you!  ;D

I'm currently working hard on finishing chapter 2 - or most of it anyway. I've added a quest log script (thank you modern algebra!) as well as started planning out what to do with battles.

I'm going to try to release chapter 2 within 2 weeks. I really hope life complies.

They are from Amaranth Studios (Aveyond creator). Amanda was gracious enough to share them with the users. I'm not sure if they're still available on her site and forums, but you can at the very least find a couple in the archives of the Loose Leaf/Tekepon site (here (http://www.tekepon.net/fsm/modules/imgbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=742&forum=1) and here (http://www.tekepon.net/fsm/modules/imgbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=741&forum=1)).

lol, that website is messing with my brain. The thumbnails won't get any larger :|
haha oh well.

Double check your link BBC. It's broken atm. You can still extract the address though.

Eep, I didn't even notice that. Thanks :3

I think I saw a Brazillian blog that had all of the Aveyond tiles in the VX format. I'll see if I can dig up the link.

The game looks really nice - the screenshots are beautiful and the world looks like it has interesting political and religious structures. One of my favourite things about a game is the complexity of the world and its characters and it looks like you are paying due attention to both. I am looking forward to seeing a release. Great work so far :)

Well, you can already download chapter 1 (http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/Lunarea/TUAHv1.02.exe). It's got about an hour of content, and it should give some idea of the story.
And thank you! I hope I can continue to deliver quality work :3

~Chapter 2~

- I've added several new scripts, so your old save will not work. Sorry 'bout that! The good news is that I don't anticipate adding any more scripts, so your saves should be good from this point on. And should I ever go back on my word here, I will most definitely provide save files for your convenience.
- The lengthy introduction is now skip-able.
- The music has been changed. As much as I love the old-school midi sound, all the orchestral custom pieces made the midi sound pretty flat. And since I've already broken the 128mb resource rule, there was no other reason to keep the midi format.
- The size has gone up to 224mb. I wish I could promise that it won't go much higher than that, but it will. Hopefully, I can still keep it a reasonable size ...
- The battle system is not done. I'm currently working on the skills and spells for the characters and monsters. The scripts I will be using, however, are in. So, while the battles are same old n' boring, they should give you an idea of how the battles will flow.
- Because a lot of people missed it, I have put an arrow above the quest giver's head in Summervale. She is only available while you have Cordelia in your party, so you have to do the side quest after getting the nectar, but before turning it in. Or, you can skip it altogether and wait for the next time Alistair is in the area.
- To my knowledge, the chapter is bug-free. If you do encounter a game-breaking bug, do let me know. Same for any passability errors or typos.
- Special thanks to Reives for hosting my project, and also to Zeriab for releasing the encryption tool that allowed me to compress my game data smoothly.

Have fun~!

Your main character's name is French for "the white", and is also the best range of clarinets in the world (probably). I like this.
The game, however, is very profound. The style is very good and the maps... dear god, they are amazing. I feel embarrassed to call myself an RPG Maker after playing this. You are amazing. I love you, will you marry me?

Already married  ;D

But I do appreciate feedback! Especially since my own stuff never seems that impressive to me. Probably because I've been staring at it too long.

Also, uploaded a new version this morning. Apparently, I lied and there was a bug that didn't let you access chapter2 ...

I've created a development blog (http://lunareas.blogspot.com/) for Twice Upon a Hero - and future projects. If you're ever in the mood to read more details about the development process, or to see me get excited/ranting over the most minuscule stuff, feel free to check it out!  ;D

wow! I played the demo.

how did you compose all the paralaxes for the maps?
did you made screenshots of the them ingame and put them together, or is there another way, because I can imagine it being quite difficult.
I really like the way you mixed vx and xp resources there.
Title: Re: [VX] Twice Upon a Hero
Post by: Lunarea on March 19, 2011, 06:36:38 AM
Thanks for trying it out, rofl!

It's not actually terribly difficult, but it can be a little time-consuming. I use Photoshop, which has layers and that makes it very easy to move things around. I also have a 32x32 grid showing, so I can quickly figure out the right placement for various walls, floors and objects.

Mapping is probably my most favorite part of development. :3

so it was really made with ingame screenshots! awesome work, I must say.

I noticed you have some mack tilechips in there, but
can you tell us from where you got the awesome chips like the ones for the exterior of the desert city houses, or are they your own work?
sincerly

Revised Chapters 1&2

Download Here (http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/Lunarea/TUAHv2_5.rar)

There have been quite a bit of changes in the revision!

Cosmetic changes:
- Custom windowskin
- New Font(please be sure to install it from the Font folder!)
- Overhaul of the menu and message systems
- Slight changes in sprites to make them a bit more unique
- Remapped: Sewers under Summervale
            CTN tech area
            Gullad Mountains (inside)

Gameplay changes:
- Skippable introduction, and ability to fast-forward text by holding down the Shift button.
- New battle system
- New and improved skill/spells
- Emergence of random encounters, and ability to toggle them on/off
- Basic tutorials for menu, quest and battle
- Complete redesign of inner Gullad Mountains, including new puzzles
- Added a new quest that can be picked up in Summervale while Claudia is in your party.

Bug fixes:
- You can no longer access sewers unless you're on the side-quest.
- You can't get the boulder stuck inside the corridor of Bethlam Tower F3
- Eventing on first chest in Bethlam tower B2 changed slightly
- Fixed a few spelling/grammar mistakes.

The story and most of the events are identical to the previous version. Though I would be very thankful if you played through the new version, it's completely understandable if you would rather wait for new content. With the release of chapter 3 (and thereon, should the need arise), I will be providing a generic save file that would allow you to access new content without having to replay the old.

You may have noticed that the size of the download is larger than the previous version. There are quite a few files in there that are in preparation for chapter 3. I don't estimate any future gigantic jumps in size, but I can try to package the audio files separately for easier download management.

Thank you, and enjoy playing!

Your storytelling and mapping is simply amazing. I like how you use the relationship system as well, especially since the characters are so well written and developed. I'd say I've gotten a good amount of play time in so far, played about 3 hours straight after downloading, and I'm planning on playing a bit more. I think I'd have to say this is the best RM game I've played.

"He calls me pretty" ~~~

I'm giving it a go and I must say I'm really impressed, Lunarea. The graphic is very well-crafted, the battle is charmingly challenging (I must say the battle system is easy to get used to yet would take a while to fully master). I love how even the normal battle keeps me on my toes all the time (I got a hard-learnt lesson of game over once due to carelessness XD). This is the first game I find normal battle so enjoyable :D (Even to the game I regard as best RM game out there, normal battle is still a pain ~)

Though, you might want to put the dialoque skip button some other one rather than Shift. I have a tendency to hold Shift the whole time to run and having to stop pressing whenever talking to a random NPC is quite annoying. I ragequitted once right after I found that out and only pick this up again recently. It still gets in the way though :)

Well, charming work you have here :D

Glad you enjoyed it! And I'm very happy to hear battles are fun. It was the weakest area for me in the previous versions and it took heck of a lot of time to set up. But it sounds like it was worth the effort (phew!)

I will be changing the skip text button to something a little less used (maybe Q) in the next release, as well as add a couple more "skip cutscene" options for some of the longest scenes.

Thanks for the C&C!

Hi Lunarea, I don't know if this has already been brought to your attention, but once you enter the forest west to Summervale a second time after collecting the nectar, you can't exit.
On a side note, I like how you write dialogues, I like it so much I read all tutorials xD

@heisenman:
Yep, it was mentioned but I'm double-checking to make sure it's fixed. I try to keep all the details in order, but every now and then one of them will slip between the cracks. I really appreciate the bug reports!
I'm also glad you like the dialogue. It's really fun to write and I often find myself chuckling at how it all comes together at the end. Hopefully the "good reader rewards" are a nice incentive as well. XD

@WeirdGameMaker:
I am trying very hard not to give an ETA because I really don't want to blow it and miss the deadline. But I'm so excited to share the 3rd chapter! It has some of my favorite locations, to date, and quite a few new party members. I just can't wait to show it all in action.
I will say, however, that I will be making a beta-tester post in a short while. I'm hoping 3 or 4 people can help me test the chapter and make sure it's as bug-free as I can get it.

I have to say I am enjoying your mapping and story. I am particularly intrigued by the second screenshot in the cave - is that part in one of your demos? Things with lots of switches intrest me!
Title: Re: [VX] Twice Upon a Hero
Post by: Lunarea on May 07, 2011, 04:48:21 PM
Thank you, Darico!

That particular shot was from a very early version of chapter 2. The puzzle combined switches with moving carts, but it was too frustrating for people and had a bug or 10 to work out. So, I reworked the area and removed it from play.

However, like you, I like switch puzzles. A few switch-based puzzles have already made their way into the new content I'm working on. Some are about sequencing (hit the right switches in the right order), there's one that makes use of a timer and I'm also trying to create one that combines switches with sound or light patterns.

Those sound like some really good ideas. Puzzles are a great way to add a new dimension to any RM game and the idea with the sounds and switches should be top. It's a shame about the cave and moving carts puzzle however, it might have been quite unique to your game.

I have tried out your demo and it is very good. I forgot to save the first time around and died when collecting nectar but isn't that always the way? lol. The tutorials are great and giving the bonuses to those who listen to them was a good idea. I assume you would be able to find more of those items throughout the game? As for the storyline, it developed nicely and always gave you enough to think about. Characters also developed well, and the use of different faces for different emotions (whilst widely used now) helped with this. Some faces are certainly amusing.

I look forward to the final product and if you want any ideas for puzzles let me know!  :D

Thank you, it's wonderful to hear that you enjoyed it. And I hope you'll get a chance to play a bit further, as the first chapter doesn't have a whole lot of puzzles, as it's rather story-heavy (which I'll probably fiddle with in the future, to balance it out with the rest of the game). I've tried for some more innovative puzzles in the tower (Chapter 2).

In theory, the moving cart puzzle was great, but I don't think I did the best job translating it into practical gameplay. It was slow and very frustrating/confusing for some players, which is something I want to avoid. I'd hate to see people feeling discouraged to play the game because of a puzzle.

I do, however, like the concept and I'm looking for a way to incorporate it into the game better. I have a couple proper mining areas where I can use the concept in, and I hope to make it a little more fun/challenging.

I just wanted to drop by and say thank you for this wonderful game.
I really enjoy the dialogues. They're well written and fun to read.

There's one thing I have to mention, though.
When doing one of the side quests, I wasn't sure if I had to return to the miner's wife or not
(the one that wanted me to deliver a letter to him).

Maybe it's just me, but I prefer to have some objective like "get your reward, fool" in the quest
or at least some notification that I just got a reward.
When I gave the letter to the miner and he teleported away I was kind of confused because
the quest was marked as completed but I had no idea if I had received a reward or not.

Apart from that it's a great game so far. Keep up the good work!  :D

Post by: Lunarea on May 12, 2011, 06:51:26 PM
@Gonor:
Once you do receive the reward, the quest is removed from the log. The complete quest is just to let you know that you can now return to the quest-giver. I can see how this can be a little confusing, however, especially since it's not mentioned in the tutorial.

I've been working on adding the name and location of the quest NPC. The quest will now be colored "complete" when you can go claim your reward, but it will have an extra line telling you where to go get it.

Thank you for playing and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Actually, if you checked the newest version of the quest script (which was just released a week ago or so), it has that function built-in, a separate spot to include which NPC gives which quest, so you might wanna check it out xD

Though when mentioning bout that, removing the quest from the log after finishing is kinda "discouraging" XD There are lots of people I know which whenever they play, they would try to finish all the entry in the "game's encyclopedia", be it beastiary, item encyclopedia or quest log :3 A log full of finished quests give a lot of satisfaction (^o^)b *thumbs up*
Title: Re: [VX] Twice Upon a Hero
Post by: Lunarea on May 13, 2011, 02:02:07 AM
I've downloaded it and plan to check out the full details soon. I'm a little hesitant to change if it involves reconfiguring script input commands, however. I added the quest script after chapter 2, and reconfiguring just all the content to add in the appropriate script commands (complete objectives and all) took quite bit of work and a large chunk of time. I feel like I'm already lagging behind, as is.  :-[

I can see your point about the quest collection (especially since I'm a player like that), but I'm not convinced it would be very practical to use the quest log for it. Because I'm also using the script as a checkpoint walkthrough (doesn't tell you how to do things, but hints at the next step) as well as for keeping track of quests, it's pretty lengthy. I'd like to have the quest log be fairly simple and clean, so information is always easy to find.

I'll have to think about it. I may just integrate it into a sort of fortune-telling concept I've been working on adding. It might tell you which areas have side quests you haven't done (but can currently pick up) on top of another couple secret things that I'm not yet revealing.  ^-^

Hey Luna, what's the missing_log.txt made by? Is there a script? It seems quite cool. Among, of course, all the other cool things.
Title: Re: [VX] Twice Upon a Hero
Post by: Lunarea on May 15, 2011, 12:03:18 AM
It's the Missing File Prevention script by woratana. It basically makes it so game doesn't quit if a resource is missing. Instead, it will display a message that X graphic/sound is missing and record it into the log. Very useful script, as it sucks to not be able to play a game over one missing file.

I'll look into that. I probably have it laying around somewhere in this computer. I'm replaying this game, and I have to say it's somehow better than it was before. Some great work.

Same here.

Found the battle system very different, did you had problems configuring it Lunarea?
Title: Re: [VX] Twice Upon a Hero
Post by: Lunarea on May 19, 2011, 06:28:17 PM
It was pretty easy to configure. YEM is fairly user-friendly if you read the manual and spend some time looking up the features you want to include. I have a custom damage formula for some skills and I got creative with how certain spells work (especially some of Penelope's healing spells). But in general, I've spent far more time tweaking the database for different skills than I did configuring the battle system itself.

I like this game so far. It's fun.

One issue that I had though. When you move the boxes to fix the bridge, if you line them up all on the left side, there's no way to get out of the puzzle area because the boxes block all ways out. I didn't know if you did that on purpose, or if you want to change it. Just thought I'd let you know.

Sadly, I hadn't saved recently before that, so I basically have to start over....

No, what I mean was I was stuck and couldn't get to the other side of the puzzle. I couldn't get to the puzzle restart button. That's what I mean.
Title: Re: [VX] Twice Upon a Hero
Post by: pacdiggity on June 12, 2011, 01:26:42 AM
Oh, well that sucks then.
Lunarea, maybe just have a parallel process on that map that resets the puzzle if you press a certain button. Or put another button in on the other side of the puzzle.
EDIT:: Hang on a second, she's already done that. Press the 'A' button to reset the puzzle. It says at the start.
Title: Re: [VX] Twice Upon a Hero
Post by: Lunarea on June 12, 2011, 02:43:41 AM
Yep! I added the reset button (keyboard button A) just in case the player managed to block themselves in. I'll try to make it a bit more clear in the puzzle explanation.  :D

No need, I just don't think I read it well enough the first run around. I feel foolish now. Oh well, great game Lunarea. Like it so far a lot.

EDIT: I found another Error. The lily pad in the mines that moves around is off track so it won't let me get on. It's one tile lower than it should be.

Oh, the dreaded "cannot replicate it as it only happens to some people" bug. That puzzle works fine for most people, but every now and then it will bug out and make it impossible to continue.  :-\

I've changed the puzzle in the new build, but I haven't uploaded it yet. Still a bit of tweaking left to do on it.

In the meantime, if you'd like, you can send me a link to your save file and I can manually get you past that room :3

@RPGMakerVX52:
It's still in progress. The current download includes two chapters and takes about 2-3 hours to complete - depending on your play speed. I'll be releasing a new build for those two chapters very soon (to fix a couple of bugs, really) and the third chapter is not too far away either. There is a total of 6 chapters planned.  ^-^

@atiebatie99:
Yep, it's been brought to my attention. I'll take a look at it, but it's not a really pressing issue at the moment. In the meantime, you can get to the title or shut down the game via the main menu.  :D

I accidently used a neutralizing serum on one of the unimportant gas spots and I can't guess the ghosts password and I can't advance :( I knew I shouldn't use the extra one but I thought I might get something for it :(

Is there a way to unencrypt it and reencrypt it? I only wanted 1 more, or the pasword...

EDIT: When chapter 3 is finisjed is it possible to make a seperate download? I just finished #2 and I had to restart for the above reason.

EDIT2: I had the lillypad bug too! You just need really good timing and it fixes itself when you get on it! ;)

Sorry for the delay in replying. I'm in the middle of house-hunting/moving and it's keeping me away more than I expected it would.

@modern algebra:
Thank you so much! It wasn't a huge game-breaking bug, but I really appreciate that you took the time to fix it.

@Infinate X:
Did you fight the two rats yet? Each of them drops one neutralizing solution. You should have enough solutions even if you don't answer the riddle. You do get something for neutralizing all the solutions, but not right away.

Just in case you really do need the riddle answer, you should check out the sign in the right corner by the ghost. And if that's still confusing ...
Spoiler for Solution:
ARKHAM
There won't be a separate download for chapter 3, but there will be a save state for the beginning of chapter 3. So, you will be able to continue from that point on.

Spoiler for:
Only some of the words are capitalized. If you put together all the capital letters, they'll spell "ARKHAM".

I'm also happy to announce that Joerao has come on board as a composer. I'm so lucky to have someone of his talent composing some nifty custom melodies! He composed Par Tillian theme for me, so stay tuned (no pun intended) for other great pieces from him.

Hey Lunarea. Played through most of the demo and got stuck when a glitch occured and I managed to save on one of those lilypads in the mine-catacomb like area. The lilypad's position on the map went haywire when I loaded the game.
Title: Re: [POTS] [VX] Twice Upon a Hero
Post by: Lunarea on July 18, 2011, 03:57:01 PM
Oh, goodness! I never thought one little puzzle would make such a big mess. I've already replaced it with something less buggy, so I hope it won't be a source of frustration in the new release.

In the meantime, allow me to apologize! I will try to link a save for just after that room a bit later this week. I will also be including a few save files with the new chapter, so you can skip over playing the same thing again and again.

I have been house-hunting for the past couple of weeks and it's really eaten up my free time.  :-[
Title: Re: [POTS] [VX] Twice Upon a Hero
Post by: Infinate X on July 23, 2011, 12:29:01 AM

With the lilypad the problem was just that it was one tile low. To fix it in game you need good timing to get on the lilypad and it fixes itself.
Title: Re: [POTS] [VX] Twice Upon a Hero
Post by: Lunarea on July 23, 2011, 05:27:26 PM
@Infinate X:
Thanks, that's good to know! I've re-created that puzzle to be a bit simpler, but I will tweak the concept around and perhaps re-use a similar mechanic in another area.
--
I've got a screenshot to share. It's very much WIP, though I'm pleased with how it's turning out:
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi242.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff267%2Flunarea_album%2FGames%2FScreenshots%2FSS-Oakwood2.png&hash=93875902264cb3a7dc843f7a7cbed2f595cad267)

Oakwood is a Western-inspired town that's a neat little side-quest hub. I'm planning a few fun quests and maybe a mini-game of some sort (duels or a shooting gallery, maybe).

I'm also very happy to share that Joerao, the composer who made the Par Tillian theme, is creating a few custom music pieces. He's already made a very ambient swamp theme as well as the town theme for Oakwood.

Some of these are in the extremes of nit-picky while others are minor, but I thought I would go ahead and write out everything I came across while playing through the game.

EDIT : After having meandered around in search of bugs to quash I forgot to mention that the game was quite enjoyable to play! I await the next release.

For some of these I noticed them but for most of them I have a question... WHAT WERE YOU DOING TO FIND THESE!?!?! Were you just randomly trying to wander through walls? In the forest I tried to walk everywhere and I didn't find any passability issues.

Yes, I was just bumping up against the borders of each area trying to find anything abnormal. Like I said, some were so small that normal players would probably never notice them, but I was just trying to be as complete as I could.

To find problems within any of your games, I would suggest using OriginalWij's Debug Tools (http://www.mediafire.com/?j78m7wbjs2649rw). If you hold down F5 it will highlight passable regions first, then if you tap F5 again it will show impassable regions and one more tap will show overlay (starred) regions. Plus it has a lot of other options that are extremely helpful too. In this way it won't take forever to simply run around and bump against the edges of all your maps.

I'll try to beta-test the heck out of newer content. I have a few people willing to help test things for me (yay!). Hopefully, it'll cut out any major bugs and keep the minor ones to a minimum.  ;D

If you need more help I can help! Also some scripts don't alias other methods so when you try to use another script below them it causes errors so those scripts need to be above the non-aliasing scripts and vice-verca.

I've had practice doing that ;D

First off, I love this game. The level of detail in the maps is amazingly complex. Add in the wonderful characters and all the chemistry and this becomes a work of art. I did however find a lack of need to use any items i collected.

I did notice one error by the mines(pic posted below)
Spoiler for:

Thank you, ldkraven! I've corrected the error.  :)

When you say lack of use for items, do you mean things like potions? I have been very generous about giving those out, as several players were concerned about MP management in battles. But I realize that not everyone will use them or need them, so I'm thinking about adding some sort of barter or alchemy system. You may be able to trade/transmute several small potions into a group potion or make them into antidotes, for example. I'm still working out the system, though I hope to have it in with chapter 3.

First of all let me just say that this is a beautiful, smart and atmospheric game.
The most interesting bit, however, was the description of early characters that I found in one of your blog entries. As a very clever man once said, design is nothing without the process. That's why it is always thrilling to follow an evolution of a concept.
We should probably make a "before/after" thread somewhere here to see how certain concepts are developing over time in people's projects.

Anyway, good work. Cheers!

Hi, great atmospheric game!  Writing, gameplay, menu & battle design feel quite professional.  The characters are thoroughly engaging, each map is unique and adds to the atmosphere and believability of the game world.

Here is one error I've found, through playing, a large passability error, from which access is gained from the ship.

@vogelmeister:
Thanks!
It was a lot of fun reading through my early concepts and writing up how things have changed. I'm planning to do the same thing for other characters, some plot points and locations. I'm especially excited to write up the way the plot has changed, but I don't want to spoil any important plot points, so I'm waiting a bit on that one.

@evildrspock:
Thank you for the bug report. There were a couple areas like that that I've made sure to fix up.

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the game. I hope I can keep up the same level of quality in future releases.  :)

That system sounds pretty cool. But when i said that i meant that i never used any items. maybe increasing the difficulty of the enemies or something. Although that could be just me. ^.^

One element that I both liked, and perhaps missed ...
Spoiler for:
... was the lack of interactive shops.  Then again, as your game was designed so far, there wasn't much money in the pocket of the players until Chapter 2, and I saw hinting at shops in the future ... I enjoy that element of buying things in games.

... But, then again, I really like how your worlds feel more real.  The various merchants and shops you can visit in your game feel very real, and Alistair has very little use for what most of the shops sell.  Plus, the lack of opportunities to re-earn gold in say, random battles makes sense for not allowing characters to burn their gold on optional items, or weapon shops, so they can't get stuck.

Are those something you are planning on retroactively fitting in the game, or just at later stages, when the shops make more sense?  Because right now, I feel like the game works fine without it.

@ldkraven:
Balancing enemies is probably the most challenging thing I've encountered so far. The battles are easy for some, while at the same time being hard for others. I think they'll probably stay on the easier side, but I do have a couple of tournaments planned. Those will be optional with more complex and longer battles.

@evildrspock:
Spoiler for:
In the conventional sense, there will probably only be a handful of shops where the party would really spend money and you won't get to those areas until very late. However, I do have several systems that I hope will be just as fun and engaging.
- Certain merchants will barter for their quality wares. Some of them may, for example, trade your health potions and some gold for mana potions. Others will trade tools and recipes for exotic and rare goods. For example, someone may part with their apple pie recipe for a fancy flower vase. Some of these rarities will come from side quests, too.
- You will have the opportunity to hire a blacksmith, a seamstress, an alchemist and a scholar. The crafters will turn raw materials into finished goods and will be able to create special equipment/items. The scholar will research materials and their properties for you as well as tell you where to get them. You won't have to pay any of them, but they may occasionally require you to do a side-quest before they can resume their duties.
- A casino will allow you to spend and/or make money. You will also be able to trade in casino chips for various prizes or open up new side-quests.
- There will be repeatable side-quests that will generate steady money. I'm hoping to integrate several different possibilities: hunting monsters, playing mini-games, delivering items or gathering base resources.
- You will be able to invest in certain things like town development, financing education and scientific discoveries.
- Lastly, in certain shops, you will be able to purchase gifts for your party members. The party member will need to be with you, and there will usually be a little cutscene. They may also display it in their room or occasionally bring it up in conversation.

where do ya get your sprites from?
cause their so cool!
Title: Re: [POTS] [VX] Twice Upon a Hero

Depends on the sprite. Most of them are just the good old RTP that's been edited and/or recolored. Others come from various websites/blogs such as ClosetVX (http://eurs.blog65.fc2.com/). If I have the time, I can make some sprites from scratch. But I've mostly focused on making faces and tiles.

I thought it was time for an update and then I noticed something that interested me, in the post ldkraven made, he had an ATS error that didn't occur while I was playing. I remember talking to that guy, but the only text issues I found were typos.  :-\

BTW, most of the typos were near the begining, mainly in the church. Some of them were very confusing :(

Hrm, I'll double-check the church, then. My testers haven't reported any typos in the church, but I'll play through it just to be safe. :)

There weren't too many but it wasn't easy to read...

Do you know when the next update should be?
Title: Re: [POTS] [VX] Twice Upon a Hero

The timing of the next update depends entirely on when I move (which I'm hoping is over the next 2 weeks). I will have literally no free time during the move, so I probably won't be able to work on the project for a week or two. However, I'm very close to finishing the revamp of the first 2 chapters. I've just got a bit of light database work and some event checking left to do now.

I don't do well on ETAs,  buuuuuut I'm pretty sure mid-November looks good for a release.  ;D

** Download updated and Revamped Chapters 1 and 2 ** (http://freebirdgames.com/Lunarea/TUAHv2.7.rar)

The list of updates is very extensive, but this is probably as close as I can get to a finalized version of the first two chapters. The updates include loads of customized graphics as well as somenew content. It's a great reminder for those of you who have played it a long time ago.

Chapter 3 is well underway and will be up for beta testing in a few weeks.

Thank you! I'm definitely planning to finish it.

I'm really excited because most of the early work (like graphics, database, script customization, etc) is finally done and I can focus on just going forward. After spending several months polishing the older stuff, it feels great to work on the new.

Took this old gamer over an hour to find a good download and playing this game has really been enjoyable........until now :(

First, is there anyplace where I can find a walkthrough ?

If I can't find an easy way to beat the game, is there at least somewhere that gives the answers to the Tower puzzles ???  :)  I did make it through the cave with the lilly pads on my own so consider myself a superior gamer :) hahahahahaha

I'm in the first room of treasure chests and needing to step on colored tiles in order.

Of course I did not write down the instructions so now I am STUCK :)

HELP !!!!!!   :)

Im not sure if I downloaded an older patch of the game.. and if so these bug reports might be fixed already.. but just in case I will present the bugs I came across while playing :)

Spoiler for:
- Sidequest; When you enter the Sewers to find the traped guard. After you cross the first bridge, there is a dialouge between Alistair, Penelope and Cordelia, this happened when Alistair was alone in my party and it seemed a little weird to me.

Spoiler for:
After you enter the mine, and venturing to the room before the "boulder puzzle" there is a slight change in music volume. Im not sure if this is intended.

Spoiler for:
After you enter the mine, and enter the room with the boulder puzzle.. if you try to reset the boulder on the sparkling switch to the left, the game will freeze at a black screen.

Im sorry if these are already fixed, but other than that I really loved every second of this game! I hope Its still on the run, cause I cant see to many posts or updates here. Maybe you are updating on a blog or something? :) Anyway, I support this game and I hope you will have the time to finish it. Its really incredible!

Edit: Sorry.. I just saw the post about the development blog..

@Linkis:
Spoiler for:
The goal of the puzzle is to step on colors to get the target color. So, if you get green, you would step on blue and yellow (because mixing blue and yellow makes green). The number in the right corner tells you how many colors you have to use. Some are tricky (like brown, for example, that can be made using red, yellow and blue or through combinations like red and green or blue and orange). There's a little letter next to the middle door that has a hint for which combinations you use first for the brown.

@Dizturb3d:
Thanks for the bug report! They're things I knew about, but haven't rolled out a fix for yet.

Outstanding and thank you Lunarea.

I deleted all the old downloads and loaded another copy so it will be a while before I get back to the tower :)
But at least I now have an answer to my question.

And you were nice enough to create a new page just for me :)

I really like what I've seen so far of this game. You're a real inspiration for me in deciding to try my hand at game graphics and character design. I used to draw a lot when I was younger, but I got really bored the instant I tried to take a highschool class. When I saw yours and Celianna's beautiful artworks, I got inspired again for the first time in six years. Thankfully, not all my skill has diminished, and my eye has only improved with age. I'm progressing in a self-taught manner.

So, thank you. And I hope this project goes well for you. Again, this is a really interesting take on an RPG. Though I think a lot of RPGs (and epic fantasy in general) tend to end with finality (Final Fantasy 8, and a number of other FFs, most MegaTen and Persona games,  The Lord of the Rings, ect.) the ones that don't always bug me when I try and think about what would happen next.
