Title: The Mortal Realm [XP]
Post by: Acolyte on July 23, 2010, 09:51:17 PM
This is a game I have been working on for a few months now. I've been collaborating with someone on the story, and a few of my friends have helped me bug test, so I guess I have a bit of a small team going.

*Most of the original premise was written by my friend. It's apparently somewhat based on the Diablo series. I've never played Diablo, so I don't really know how much is based on it.*

The setting is present day Earth. Humankind has forgotten the existance of magic, but it is still praciced in widespread underground communities. In fact, much of the Earth's history was shaped by magic, unbeknownst to the common folk. One of the oldest races of magic-users, the Horadrim, has nearly died out. Only one remains to wander the Earth. Lately, many prophets have been forseeing a terrible cataclysm. The Gates of Hell will be unlocked by a special key. The Skeleton Key, one of the 42 Keys of Immortality, has the ability to unlock anything. The Horadric Wanderer has taken it upon himself to gather powerful warriors in order to stop this outcome.

Miscellaneous info:
Spoiler for:
Lothia: The largest enlightened city. The entire population is either Enlightened or lowers. Magic is openly discussed and expressed within the city. The city is in the middle of the Sahara and is completely concealed within sandstorms making it invisible to satellite images and even the human eye at certain distances.

Greneo: The Enlightened kingdom in Germany. Has a bit of a rough history, especially concerning summoners.

The Council: An organization designed to regulate magic use and govern the enlightened. Their exact number is unknown. They wear large distinctive brown coats with hoods, completely obscuring their identity. They never talk unless they must. They only discuss matters in closed doors that not even Lothian Guards may enter.

Enlightened: The term for people with the ability to wield magic.

Lowers: A derogatory word for non-magical people with knowledge of the magical world. Can also be used to refer to non-magical people in general.

Commoners: Non-magical people who know nothing of magic.

Horadrim: An ancient race widely believed to be the first practitioners of magic. When and where they lived is unknown. Their texts have been found in many languages. Scholars pay little attention to them as they are mainly legends.

I don't want to give too much away, but I want to get the feel of the world across.

The Horadric Wanderer - Not much is known about this mysterious being, other than that he is a powerful magician. Wears a long hooded robe that conceals his identity.

Guile Havor - A 20 year old Necromancer from New York. Has studied under his grandfather since he was a small child. Has short, silver hair, a product of his arcane arts. Often gets into street fights.

Ashelin Reye - A 17 year old Summoner from Washington. Studied under an old hermit she found in the woods when she was very young. Has long brown hair. Tends to rely heavily on her summoning to get her out of situations.

Henzarlle - A Paladin from the Kingdom of Gren. Though technically still a squire, he is very capable in combat. Has short blonde hair and a light complexion.

Inez - A mathematician from Africa. Has the ability to work powerful magic through her equations. Runs a fashion boutique part-time in Lothia, the magic capitol. Has long dark hair and a dark complexion.

Masca - A Cleric in her 40's. Tends to be very vague. Very capable in combat. Has red hair and a medium complexion.

*There are a few more main characters, but we're still planning some things out.*

The game is pretty much a straight-forward rpg. I'm using a side-view battle system with customized summoning skills and black and white magic. For the game, I wanted a heavy emphasis on the story. I didn't want the whole "designated hero/heroine/sidekick". I wanted it to feel like every character was just as important as the others. I want the player to be able to explore their backstories if they choose to.

As a fan of Diablo, I'll be definitely interested in seeing those screenshots when you can get them up and working. :3

Thanks.:)
Honestly, making the game has been easier than making that post. I think theres something wrong with the posting system. Either that or my computer. :/

Lothia is the main magic capitol of the game, located in the Sahara Desert. :)

Yeah...I know. :'(
I edited it at least 4 times now, and every time something random screws up. o_O
I think I'm just gonna say screw it for right now.

Edit: Woah, thank you Zylos. That looks much better.  ;8

Hm... might I recommend using a wall autotile for your room borders?

Wall autotile? Hmmm... I didn't even know there was a wall autotile. XD
Thanks for the tip.

Edit: Is this a little better?

I also added another room to the right, because I realized that Grandpa didn't have a place to stay. :P

I'd also like to know your opinion on the doors. I wanted to put actual doors for each room, but it doesn't look right. Should I just leave the open spaces?

Here's a small video of the intro to the game. I didn't have a lot of ideas of how to start, so its basically just a picture slideshow right now.
Also, I'm having a lot of trouble with the battle graphics, so they don't really look right.

In the battle scene, the party is flying...

Yeah, I know. ^^;
I'm concentrating on trying to calibrate the enemy sprites. Then I'll fix the battlebacks.
I wish I knew how to use the regular character sets for the battle sprites, but I'm afraid of editing the script without much scripting knowledge.

Here's another video. I tried tweaking the battle script to fix the sprites, and I managed to fix the summons, but the enemies are still a problem.

I also redid a lot of the maps. Hopefully they look a little better. ^^

Aweasome menu. Still battling bugs, and some big empty maps... But the menus and all the rest seems working and being really nice.

Looks good. For some reason the story reminds me of Harry Potter.....never played Diablo.

That's sorta what I thought too. I kind of think of it as a sort of Lord of the Rings/Harry Potter hybrid with some Final Fantasy elements.

Edit: W00T! Enemies are fixed! ;8

Thought I might as well update, as I haven't done so in a while. School is making it hard to work on the game.
I added a few new scripts and redid a lot of maps. The screenshots are updated. I took down the demo because I don't really think its ready quite yet. I was a little over-excited to get something posted.
The first dungeon is about halfway through being mapped. I have the puzzles planned out and the boss and mini-boss planned as well. I have a spriter now, so the battle sprites should be finished soon, as well as a couple other charactersets.
