Title: VX Character Sprite Generator

While I was clicking through links today, I happen to come across this page: http://www.famitsu.com/blog/tkool/ (http://www.famitsu.com/blog/tkool/).  In the newest post as of 3/14/2008, there's a link to a page that contains a VX Character Sprite Generator (http://www.famitsu.com/freegame/tool/chibi/index1.html).  Seems it was based off of the XP generator from this site (http://www.geocities.jp/kurororo4/looseleaf/), or that's how I read it when put into a Babelfish translation.   :)


PLEASE NOTE:
You must click the download button right below the character preview, not right click and Save Picture As. Usually if it is working correctly, the default file name will be "image". If it is not, or if your picture does not load for you after saving, refresh the generator page, wait a minute, and try again. Remember, you must click the download button, and you must save as a PNG. Additionally, in order to use a single spritesheet instead of a collection of eight like the RTP, you must name your file with a "$" at the beginning of the file name.

Although the resources for the generator seem a bit limited, we can still make some great sprites with this thing.

If you run the website in a translator, one of the yellow bulletins comes up as "Tiny KYARATSUKURU", the parts will be added from time to time to go to class though.  I believe every time they put up a new lesson, new parts will become available. Two such lessons are already done: recolors of sprites (2/27/08) (http://www.famitsu.com/blog/tkool/2008/02/_lesson1.html) and frankenspriting(3/13/08) (http://www.famitsu.com/blog/tkool/2008/03/_lesson2.html). So hopefully it'll become a little less limiting.

Google's web page translator (http://www.google.com/translate_t).  Just copy the url into translate a web page and select Japanese to English.

If i save a male character my Computer canth open it. I have Windows Vista, but u tryd on a Windows XP Computer and he has the same problem

Without being more specific on what you're trying to open the file with, I'll try my best to answer. VX allows you to upload .png files, so you shouldn't be having a problem with that.  Now if you're trying to open the file in say, MS paint, then click the spoiler below.

Well it's saved as a .PNG so MS paint won't open it, as far as I know.  So you first have to convert it to a .BMP file type.  I use IrfanView for this.   You can download it here (http://www.download.com/IrfanView/3000-2192_4-10021962.html?part=dl-IrfanView&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlPid=10755180).

Once you open up the image in it, just click Save as, and make use you save it as a .BMP file.  Then you'll be able to open it in MS paint, and edit it as you like.

You could most likely use a fancier program like GIMP or Photoshop to both edit the file and save it, but since I don't use them, I cannot comment on their usage.

I was woundering where can I put my own sprite shop so I ca start helping people. I can create characters quick with the generator, but I don't know how to recolor them yet.

i was woundering can we use the rpg maker 2000 and 2003 characters in rpg maker vx. Because I can use the character.EX to make characters fast and change colors with out even have to goto another program to recolor the sprites

Thanks that really help with the webpages that us english people can now finally understand. Thanks for the page!!!!

Then online character generator is great, but we need an offline character generator so if we loose our internet we couldn't use the site!!!!!Like a free download of the character generator. I already have one for 2000.....I dont have one for vx, but like to and would make characters fast!!!!

As of 7/16, The character sprite generator was updated with at least 50 new parts, mostly hair, but a few other things as well.

Well, i used this sprite generator, but when i import the character sheet the selection box only highlights parts of it, like the legs of one and the head of another one. Any help would be appreciated.

yeh the it should say only image but you either rename it or when you save it you write $ next to your image
then import
for example you get one off the generator then you save it say its called image then you go to your
desktop and find it(or where ever you saved it) then you rename it by writing $image
then you import and it should work

Yeah, that's what I was getting it. Pressing Save Picture As ... will download an empty sprite, thereby useless -  you have to press the button to download it. If you could open it in an image editor it would mean that you downloaded the sprite correctly and it was a problem with RMVX. Otherwise, you just need to press the actual download button and everything should be fine.

well yea but the button im pressing doesnt look like that and if it makes a diffrence im using the english translated one from google

Ok, so i made the image i wanted and saved it in my Character files....
Then when i go into the char files its nothing...
Any ideas?

It's Japanese. Use Google's website translator. I have no clue what you're talking about with your character problem. Grammar rocks. Though, as it seems you have no clue how to save anything. Funny thing is, you don't actually need to name your character sheets anything unless it's a single character. (Which is a 3x4 sheet, 96x128 pixels, which is one character). If you import single character sheets, make sure their file names begin with "$". Try using the import button instead of dragging and dropping, or saving, your resources into the folders sometime. I know that every once in a while it wouldn't take if you just put it in the folder. It was odd, but shit happens.

I didn't see that section you're refering to anywhere, and I was viewing the site translated by google. I looked up and down the page a couple times, and even used the word finder to locate it, and it didn't find those words on the page.

Ok, so I'm kinda new to the whole sprite creation thing. Whenever I make a sprite and upload it into RPG Maker VX and select it as the sprite to use as its animation it only will display a piece of one of the walking animations (I.E. It will only show the top left corner where the sprites head is when selected) instead of the whole piece and properly moving. Any explanations?

P.S. I tried the renaming the file with a !$ after it and it still didn't work.

Like when i download them..It doesnt work..i cant view them and it wont show up when i import them in the game

1: Learn to quote correctly.
2:Make sure they're saved as PNGs. Save the file with a $ at the beginning of the file name. Like this:  $charactername.png

Ok sorry another newb I've been trying this for the past 12 hours.

I Have downloaded the file as a .png and tried putting the $ and a !$ sign in front and still nothing appears, any ideas i'm on vista if thats a problem?

Have you tried refreshing the page, waiting a minute for everything to fully load, and then click the download button below the preview?

Alright, i've tried that sprite maker and all is well. Until i import it and try it. The background of the sprite isn't transparent and is always white.
I always press the download button underneath it and the sprite appears. It moves and everything, but the background is always friggin white. Am i supposed to manually erase the background in photoshop or something or???

Sure, why not? Or you could import the sprite through the Resource Manager of your project and left-click the background colour to have it become transparent.

to anyone just seeing this. it seems that the famitsu character generator has been moved or removed. i tried using the old site location and it doesnt show it. when i tried the wayback machine it just doesnt work. so once i found out how to access it again i will post it here.
