Title: RMRK Level System
Post by: Roph on May 16, 2007, 10:10:40 PM
What is it?
Now on topics, instead of a member's displayed postcount, you see a "level". Pretty fitting for an RPG Maker forum.

What determines a level?
Postcount along with how long you've been a member.

TELL ME MOAR ABOUT IT
It uses a special algorithm on your postcount and also takes into account how long ago you registered to work out a corresponding level. As you gain higher levels, it becomes harder to attain the next one. Example: A newly registered member won't have any trouble progressing through the first couple of levels, though somebody like zypher on 8,000 or so posts will have to post much more to gain a level.

So it's basically the same principle as postcount? Why bother?
Shutup, this is cooler. But seriously though, it adds mystery to a member's postcount. Far too often people are judged solely on something like it, or people feel they can bitch. If you absolutelymust know somebody's postcount, you'll always be able to see it by going to their profile. Of course the level system still gives an idea of postcount, but it's less precise. Also, it's very easy to progress through the starting levels. You can also see a member's postcount by hovering over their level. It'll show their count and also member number in a tooltip.

How can I level up?
Post on the forum. The only other thing that affects your level is how long you've been here, which you can't change. You can just sit there not posting and as new people register over time, it'll bump your own level up (albeit slowly).

Can I have the algorithm? I want to workout when I'll change :O
No

Lol. I'm suspecting an exponential function (yes, my class just learned it. XD). But seriously, you're rising at an... well, an exponential rate, so yeah...

I just love this system <3

Can I have the algorithm? Lol, just kidding.
I have already it. (Well... It hit dead on with 5 different members ^_^)

No, I can't tell you or Silvy would ban me and then kill me. (Why did I lent that weapon to him >_<)

This is something that gives the forum that little thing extra.
I love it, yes even enough to repeat myself

People are usually judged by rep I thought...
I bet my sister could figure it out!  ;8

EDIT:
You can still see peoples post count in their profile....

*looks at Silver*

Can't tell you  :'(
Just do some analyzing, plotting and guessing. You will be doing fine then I'm certain.
You could do the easy way with hacking. All that can happen is Silver catching 'n' banning you ^_^

Just enjoy the system.

I know what the algortithm is, Silverline gave it to me himself.  Not directly, but I still have it.  Unless he deleted it.  Then, I don't.  So, I probably don't.  :(

EDIT:  Yes, I do.  I have to decode it from PHP, though.

I think it has to do with square rooting and then some stuff.
Title: Re: RMRK Level System
Post by: Roph on May 17, 2007, 01:01:11 AM
No square roots here =p

I'm planning to update it probably sometime tomorrow so it shows the second part as a percentage.

So say your level could appear like this:

"Level 20 (88%)"

Or if it's one digit it adds a zero pad:

"Level 15 (30%)"

Or if your level is dead on;

"Level 54"

I'll give you a hint, moo, someone with 1000 posts is level 27, and someone with 100 posts is level 9

Actually, I might be wrong, I'll go test it out
Title: Re: RMRK Level System
Post by: Kokowam on May 17, 2007, 01:18:46 AM
And someone who's 10,000 is 70. Lol. I'll just have to make a value table or something.

EDIT: Wait, Ferenn is 101 posts and he's level 8.

Yeah, I think I might have gotten it wrong  ;9

Ok, never mind, I just mixed it up a little.

Here's your new clue:

100 posts = Level 8

1000 posts = level 27

10000 posts = level 64

Ok.

You should find a way to factor in joined dates, so elder members that don't post as much don't suffer.

LIKE ME. WHO JOINED OVER A YEAR AGO. BEING ONLY A FEW DECIMALS OVER MASTERMOO. WHO JOINED, LIKE, 3 MONTHS AGO.

I think that can be labeled as ageism.

Also, you can still view the top 10 post counts here (http://rmrk.net/index.php?action=stats). Perhaps that should be changed to show the top 10 levels?

This was done in partial to stop people from judging you on you post count, I think judging someone on their join-date is the same basic thing.

Quote from: Silver
Far too often people are judged solely on something like it (post-count), or people feel they can bitch

It's not a judging system (although it will sadly be used as one >_>) it's there to give a less precise idea on someones post count. Member number was given to stop oldies like you from bitching. You lose  :*
Title: Re: RMRK Level System
Post by: Moss. on May 17, 2007, 04:38:59 AM
So judging people by their post count is much better, then?

So instead people will just judge you based on your level number. Nobody's going to look at the member number, because it's too vague. Who knows how big the gap is between member number 2057 and member number 2304? Could be months. Could be weeks. But a level number, yeah, that'll definitely help people ... what? What will it help people do? It'll help them judge people with decreased accuracy. It equalizes the standing between a very intelligent member that's been here for years and posts rarely, and a member that's been here a few months and posts nothing but senseless spam.

Yes. Yes it is a judging system. The only way to get rid of a judging system would be to remove joined dates, post counts, levels, AND extra access and RMRK Advanced. It's all a system of labeling this group of people better than the other.

Well, whatever.
Title: Re: RMRK Level System
Post by: Deliciously_Saucy on May 17, 2007, 04:45:08 AM
I actually agree with that, this will just be another judging point (if not a stronger one) for people to use. Other then cosmeitcally I don't see it changing anything. The only judging system that should be used is rep as in most  cases it's a true reflection.

If you want to stop people using their post counts as means of elitism, then simply do what FFS did and remove the post counts all together.
Title: Re: RMRK Level System
Post by: Moss. on May 17, 2007, 04:50:36 AM
Really, I don't think Silverline did it to remove judging in the first place. I may not be too active in every part of these forums, but I'm pretty sure we're a very laidback forum, and there isn't too much noob-flaming or judging going on around here, though I may be wrong. I really think he did it because it would be neat/interesting. Which it is. I just think basing it solely off of postcount isn't an accurate representation of a forum members "level."

I mean, if he did in fact do it to reduce "judging," wouldn't reducing everything to a level based solely on post count be completely detrimental to the cause? Now, instead of judging people by how long they've been here, what their rep is, and how many posts they have, we're just going to judge them on some number that really only represents ONE of those factors.

Bah, who cares, it's just an internet forum. I'm going to bed.
Title: Re: RMRK Level System
Post by: modern algebra on May 17, 2007, 05:54:41 AM
Yeah, I kind of agree with Samurai Pizza Karl (by the way, the seriousness of your sig picture really contrasts with the fact that your name is "Samurai Pizza Karl"). You might as well throw in some additional things to determine level. I actually like level more than post count, because it's kind of neat and unique, but it wouldn't hurt to add in a few extra factors. Like, instead of log10(post count)3, you could make it like:

log10(post count)3  / (.001)(Member Number). It wouldn't make much of a difference, but it would take it into account.

Of course, the more you try to make level an accurate representation of the member, the more a tool for judging it would become, and so it might not be a good idea. But I don't think there is much elitism going on in the first place that we need to build defense mechanisms against it.

Just postcount (at the moment? =o)

Also yeah, the main reason was just to be neat and also, this being an RPG forum, kinda fitting. :o

Title: Re: RMRK Level System

Ok, updated again. Percentages towards the next level are working fine.

ALSO NOW, it factors in how long you've been here.

The higher your user ID (i.e. the sooner you registered here), the more it will subtract from your level.

So somebody like crankeye (user ID = 2) is basically untouched, lol.

[edit] LOL, ok. Tweaked it so that a user with a very high user ID (just registered) and like 1 post isn't owned by that new algorithm and it's impossible to have a negative level.

Postbits on all themes updated. Now all the info underneath is like this:

- Badge (if they have one) if not, normal stars

- Custom title (if they have one)

- Rep (and + / - links if it's another member's postbit and they have enough to modify rep (all this on the same line)

- Level (Hover over the level and you'll get a tooltip that comes up and it'll say their user ID and also their postcount)

- Member's personal text

What I think the level should be based on

1. Post Count (Get rid of Zypher's 7000 fake posts)
2. Rep (Get rid of DS's +216 fake rep)
3. Time Online
4. Amount of people who have you as their friend

Anyone agree? Or have something to add to my list?
Title: Re: RMRK Level System

you said amount of friends which is dumb, I can add as many as people as I want.

Not amount of friends you have. Amount of people who have you as their friend. There's a difference.

I chose time online as that also is something that should bring your lvl up as it shows how active you are. Just like your post count.
Title: Re: RMRK Level System
Post by: Arrow on May 18, 2007, 10:25:03 PM
While I would agree with dropping, perhaps, at least half of Zypher's fake posts, as the joke has kind of lost it's value by this point, I disagree completely with the rest. Saucy earned her rep, wether it's something you would do or not. :P

Time online can easily be abused. and besides, your level would launch (hmmmmmmm) seeing as how you have the highest amount of that.
Title: Re: RMRK Level System

I guess maybe not all that rep but I'm just refering to losing the fake stuff. Maybe it is maybe it isn't a good idea. I'm just throwing some stuff out there that the levels can be based on so they aren't JUST based on how many posts we have

If how long you were online affects your level, it doesn't mean you are active.
I could just leave RMRK up all day, and just come back and press something every now and then.
And I could black-mail people into adding me as their friends! xD
I think the level system is awesome, and it's good you can see their post count, otherwise I wouldn't be able to make sense of it! :-\
By the way, why can't I add/subtract reputation?
Is it cause I have -1 rep'?
If so, WHO SUBTRACTED MY REP'!!??
:D
Title: Re: RMRK Level System
Post by: Roph on May 24, 2007, 04:03:06 PM
You have to have 70 (or 80? something like that) posts before you can edit rep. :)
Title: Re: RMRK Level System
Post by: Roph on May 24, 2007, 09:42:59 PM
UPDATE

Ok, now the level system really is influenced by more than your postcount.

The BIGGEST influence on your level is your postcount.

The NEXT BIGGEST influence on your level is worked out from your member ID (been a member longer = lower ID)

Rep also has a TINY influence. ONLY a positive rep can do anything, a negative rep is interpreted as zero (no influence). To possible whiners: Rep does *hardly anything* to your level, you'd need a HUGE rep to make any significant difference :).

On a completely unrelated note, wow I have like the strongest Deja Vu ever right now of this moment.

Yep, I'm now level 37, instead of level 32!

Is this a glitch, or is this person supposed to be such a high level:

Same thing I know.

I've seen members with like 100 posts at level 33.

Defiantly an error.
Her rep is 0, she has 1 post, and she registeredb April 29, 2007.

Silverline, you got some splainin' to do.

Wow, haven't heard that in forever!

Yeah, like almost every new member is level 31...

Link? Or did you post these posts like ages ago. There was a period of like half an hour or so while I took the old one out (fucked with everyone's level) then put the new one in.

I just went to the member's list, found a new member with a couple of posts, found a post by them, and their level is 0 (60%). Looks fine to me.

I like post counts more...I can't see my smexy and first 1k posts when I post and I'm not bothered to go into my profile  :tpg:

It's not that bad though...it's a pretty good idea for an RPG Maker forum...

That is as expected. She's a couple hundred down as for user ID.

Her user ID is high, but her register date was April 29, 2007? That doesn't make any sense.

The later registered, the higher the user ID. Your level appears to be based on how much less your ID is then the latest registered (maybe?). Thus, her level is high because she her ID is 200 less than the latest registrant? maybe?

Well whatever, I'm happy with it.

No, the older the member, the lower the ID. Crankeye has user ID 1, and she has a really high ID since she's new.

Spot on. If a user (like her) with an ID 200 below and if the current newest registered member posted 200 times, they'd have the same level. There's nothing wrong with it, it's working exactly as it's supposed to.

It's much easier to gain your first levels. For example her, with just 200 getting level 10, though me with an ID thousands below and also having thousands of posts being level 61.

Or ... a mouse. Because for most normal people, drawing straight or smoothly curved lines with any kind of mouse is damn near impossible.

Yeah, especially when they're all squirming around. I find it works a lot better if you break their necks first.

What? Oh... that kind of mouse.

It's a barebones ultra cheap low dpi optical mouse.

Seriously, your average decent-ish optical mouse is like, 200dpi, this is like 30 ;9
