Title: Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
Post by: hatefuckingforest on November 30, 2006, 08:49:48 PM
This is an awesome book (this part is not up for debate). But apart from it's merit as a work of fiction, it also show's us how a liberal society can be more oppressive than a totalitarian one.

Opinions?

I read this book long ago, as an assignment for school.  I'm a science fiction buff, so I enjoyed it, at least until I realized how completely lame it was.  Even while it was really slow-moving and boring, and didn't even tell much of a moral, I have respect for it due to its originality and the fact that it is a classic work of literature.

I suppose one might consider it to be "slow-moving" and "boring" if you have a short attention span. As for it's moral, it doesn't have one. Mr. Huxley had the good taste not to shove dogmatic propaganda down our throats, and instead merely presented a believable future world in which runnaway hedonistic liberalism has created a society more socialy constraining and oppressive than any of the totalitarian societies of the past. It also shows how losing touch with holistic and heroic values in exchange for "individuality" and personal comfort and hedonism produces docile, unimaginative, and inneffectual people.

Anyone have any real opinions on these things?

People who read stories for their morals are douchebags.

Morals are for douchebags, just an excuse for denying reality and justifying parasitic behavior.

*coughchokesputter*  >_o;  I did give my real opinion.

Furthermore, a slow-moving plot has very much to do with the style/skill of the author, and very little to do with the attention span of a reader.

Very well, then what is your opinion on the rest of the things I said in my post, as, those are the things I am most interested in getting a responce to.

Well really you said it all in your first post. What is there to add to that? I don't think anyone is going to disagree with you.

I like the part where he said it was relevant even though it had nothing to do with classic literature.

HFF's image removed. Although, I probably should have done so sooner. Oh well.

Arrow, if that post doesn't represent you very well, then I'll have to no longer like you.  :)
