I have RPG Maker XP, the 'official' one from the enterbrain english site.
I have been working on a game for the past three weeks and cannot open the game.rxproj file. It says "Unexpected FIle Format" in an error message when I double click it. I have opened that same file for the past three weeks without problem. I have tried moving all the project folders into a 'new project', but that only works to the extent I have the Actor, Item, Armour and Enemy/Troops Database. I can see the 'Map002.rxdata' files, all of them, but they don't appear in this 'new project' version, only the first map works. So I have loads of maps THERE, but not 'accesable'.
HELLLLP!
Search for the RMXP FAQ. I posted the answer there, I don't know if Zeriab already updated the first post with the answer, but the answer is there. Should be the very last post.

No, it was the wrong question. :P I can't see the one with my 'Error Message'. I tried the last one anyway, still didn't work. It's saying that it's an Unexpected File Format, not an Incompatable Version.
Make a new project and copy it's game.rmxproj.
Try to overwrite your game.rmxproj with the new one.
Usually works...
I am having the same problem... this version of rpgmaker is brutal :-[
You also need to copy the MapInfos.rxdata for the maps to work. Also Try copying one file by one and start the project after each copying. When it crashes, you have just found and copied the corrupted file.
But first of all...
Backup your data first!
