I've used NVU a couple of times. When I first used it I didn't have a clue. I have dreamweaver 8 but don't use it for creating anything. I use it sometimes for easier editing of a page, like the colours and that =/

I don't bother with anything really and just use a CMS.

For the SMF skins I make I just use the online editor thing built into the forum, which is basically like notepad.

They all do. You could always just get somebody else to host the mysqldb. Nobody knew it but m-wave's forums were using a mySQL database hosted by me ~

Not any more though seeing as m-wave was shut down by michaelxp =/

This will sound dumb but, I don't use any program. I use HTML and some minor CSS on a blank notebook document and thats all. You can see how one of my sites turned out  http://freewebs.com/luigisrump/index.htm (http://freewebs.com/luigisrump/index.htm). Yeah the whole theme to the site is a butt... Just stay with me on the point. Just look for an HTML site, I recommend http://www.wise-old-man.com/ (http://www.wise-old-man.com/), and then try to do it on your own. Use the site as a source for codes you don't know or how to make codes you know even better. You may not get the best results the first time, or you might even get better results because there are no limitations! The only limitations are set by you! Hope this might help.

I use Dreamweaver, but I could really use any program because I code all of my pages entirely by hand in valid XHTML and CSS. The only reason I use dreamweaver is because it color codes the different tags so it's easier on my eyes :)

I use notepad at the moment. I have dreamweaver somewhere, I just haven't gotten around to finding it and installing it again since I formatted (and it's been around a month...I'm lazy I guess).

I used HTML-Kit a few times on a friends computer, I kinda liked that. And I've used Frontpage too, but I don't remember much about so I can't really comment on it.

Anyways, I'm not really skilled when it comes to web design, so notepad works for me. :P

No it's not, freely hosted websites give visitors the impression that you don't even care enough about your site to get some proper hosting for it.

I basically by principle don't bother with invisionfree or other freely hosted forums, along with freely hosted sites, and I know alot of other people don't either.

Check the link in the forum footer, it hardly costs much.

I can understand something free if you're just starting out, but if you want people to take you seriously it's probably a wise idea to pay like Silverline mentioned before.

Well, you can't expect people to just KNOW about your site and want to visit it. You have to advertise it and put a lot of effort into it, it's not all instant gratification. :P

Title: Re: website makers
Post by: Maglor on October 07, 2006, 08:06:48 AM
How should I advertise?  ???
Title: Re: website makers
Post by: Roph on October 07, 2006, 09:49:47 AM
Forums mostly I guess.

I don't really advertise my site, though it's gotten reasonably popular just through word of mouth.

If you're a newbie, you could use something called Site Spinner.

Or, you could use a CMS. My site is powered by a CMS ~

"Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit..."
"There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain..."

It's junk text.

QUOTE:

"There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don't look even slightly believable. If you are going to use a passage of Lorem Ipsum, you need to be sure there isn't anything embarrassing hidden in the middle of text. All the Lorem Ipsum generators on the Internet tend to repeat predefined chunks as necessary, making this the first true generator on the Internet. It uses a dictionary of over 200 Latin words, combined with a handful of model sentence structures, to generate Lorem Ipsum which looks reasonable. The generated Lorem Ipsum is therefore always free from repetition, injected humour, or non-characteristic words etc."

When people design web templates or layouts they usually fill places designed for text with that lorem ipsum thing, just as a filler and for an example of what text would look like in those areas ~
