Freedom of speech exists as long as you only speak freely about what people want to hear. A paradox, yes.

Somehow I doubt that, and it seems you're starting to make things up.   :| And without trying to cause another argument about USA, I wouldn't go as far to say it's the dumbest country ever. I'm sure you'd rather live here than... well, a lot of places. The problem here is that until recently, the US hasn't had to defend themselves against anything remotely threatening, so we've been able to take everything for granted, while eveything has actually slowly been taken away from us.

But that's another topic. Freedom of speech? Yes, to an extent, it exists. I suppose though, if it was truly free, there wouldn't be any extent at all, it would have no limits, but it does, proving again that it's a paradox. In school you have absolutely no rights at all. Teachers/staff can search your property, your locker, your pockets even without your consent. You cannot discuss religion for the most part in any public schools, and saying anything detrimental against the US today will get you in serious trouble.

Well i dont really talk about religion.Inless its in science class cause my teacher knows how we got here by evolution and yet insist to believe in god.WHILE SHE KNOWS EVERYTHING ON HOW WE GOT HERE and none of the stuff she knows has to do with god.Everyone in the class talks about relgion there. And im not making this stuff up.I guess i really hate america and wear stuff thats offensive to americans.

Freedom of speech should be allowed as long as your freedom doesn't impair anyone elses freedoms. Why would you say "f*ck" in public where a 3 year old would be. Maybe your "Gay Pride" shirt makes some people feel uncomfortible. Doing so basically revokes your right.

Not speaking things that would make people feel uncomfortable would in turn not be free speech, correct? This means you can't say things that they don't want to hear. If you aren't allowed to say something, then your speech is being restrained, and is not at all free.

So if i said:
"George W. Bush rocks!!"
it would be free.No?
But if i added on just to be an ass:
"But John Carry rocks more"
would that be free?

Free speech...

nothings free. ever. end of story.

why?

everything u say and do will have consequences. you choose what you say and what you do, THAT is your right. what other ppl do and how they react is THEIR right.

so u wore a T-shirt to school.. you wore it didnt you?

You excersised your right to choose what you were going to wear, the ppl who were in authority above you, excercised their right to stop you.

everyone has rights, so there has to be a system in place to maintain balance. that system doesent care about the individual. the system might mean u feel like your loosing out, but thats just so the balance overall is maintained.

these days the system is loosing controll, the more ppl that decide they have the right to force there will upon others the more the world carreers towards total chaos.

little things add up to make big consequences.

Air is free.
Title: Re: Freedom of speech
Post by: XtarsiA on April 12, 2006, 07:23:40 PM
actually no its not. there is a limmited amount of "air" while we dont pay air tax or anything ike that, pollution, is degradeing the quality of the air gradually, as we cut down more and more trees the the rate of replenishment of oxygen in the atmosphere slows down.

air is just very very very cheap, but the cost, is all your recycling/waste disposal ect ect, wich u DO have to pay for, so indirectly, u (or someone else for u) are paying for the "upkeep" of the air u breath.

in short, money is spent somewhere by someone to keep the air breathable. therefore, it is not free.

Maybe the problem is in the interpretation of the right of free speech.
It means that the government, or anyone for that matter, CANNOT pass any laws or what have you restricting your right to speak freely. But free speech doesn't mean "no consequences." There are still places where it's simply not appropriate to do or say certain things. (I'm not relating your your situation, specifically, Mental, I'm just speaking generally)
Like, there's no law that says "you can't say the f word in a public school." That would be a violation of free speech. However, if you DO say the f-word in a public school, you'll be punished because it's not appropriate to say that in a public school. Not because you're not allowed to say it, PERIOD, or because some law prohibits you from saying it. No, because public school's are filled with young, impressionable children, and the f-word is NOT appropriate there!

.....eh......that still doesn't prove anything either way, I guess. It certainly is a troublesome little right...

If mental is from The States, he most likely is in the bible belt. There's alot of Emos there for some reason.... It's bizzare.

I seriously think our 'freedom of speech' is severly limited. I swear once on my show, and the FCC goes crazy. I call a cop a c*ck master, and it's illegal. WTF?

As was said earlier, in school you and your parent sign over many of your rights. Of course, I never signed or let my parents sign any of that stuff, though my schooling history is a completely different topic (Probably not one for intelligent debate, but maybe). Typical school dress codes request that you do not wear anything with sexual references, thus any sort of gay pride shirts are out of the question (gay being assumed to be refering to sexual orientation, and not simply "happy" pride, though you might be able to get off claiming it is). You of course are also not allowed to curse in school, and some schools may not allow any sort of political or controvicial clothing.
People can also set rules that you are not allowed to curse on their private property, I am not sure that this can get you arrested, but it can certainly get you removed from the area. I suppose the laws are different in different states, but here there are no laws against cursing on public property, no matter who is around (little kids or old people, doesn't matter).

I am against the suppression of freedom of speech in any way, but it is obvious there are exceptions to "freedom of speech" in America, and most likely other countries that claim freedom as well. It is a sad thing, but thats how it is.

Actually, we have more trees today then we did before we started cutting down all the trees thanks to tree farms. However, that is also a very different topic.
