I will say it's a bullshit rule, but he really shouldn't have lost the ball when he hit the ground, that's the only reason it got overturned.

If he had played good football (assuming he really was attempting to dive for the endzone way too short) he'd have brought that ball to his chest and made it a 1st and goal situation instead of trying to pad his stats.
