Title: Relapse
Post by: CartoonFan on May 15, 2012, 01:28:06 AM
I need a program that I can put on my computer that will block a website with a password protection. Then I'm gonna enter a random sequence of keys that I'm not watching myself enter. Then I'm gonna give that password to somebody else. And then I'll never go to that website again.

-Google is turning up shit that doesn't work how I need it to.
-Firefox add-ons can always be disabled, because they're just add-ons.
-The Windows 7 site blocking functionality only works on Internet Explorer.
-I can't see a psychologist about this. I just can't. Don't ask me why.
-I will never ever download a third browser. If you know of two different programs that'll do what I need them to do for firefox and internet explorer in particular, that would be good enough.

Please don't tell me that there isn't ONE program on the entire internet that can do what I need it to do. There HAS to be one. There are billions of pages on the internet. ONE of them has to contain the kind of program I'm looking for. Don't ask me why I need it. Just tell me how to find it.

If you are not going to watch yourself enter this random sequence of keys, how are you going to give it to someone else?

You know, self-control is the only way you're every going to beat this.  I know that is hard, I really do. But where there is a will, there is a way. You will always find a way to circumvent any blocks you put on this one website.  I suggest when the urge hits you to go to it, walk away. Get away from your computer for a while and do something else.  Do it until you forget about the urge to visit the site. If need be turn the internet off for a while, or don't get online. Whatever it takes.  But seriously, you can install any program you want, until you learn to control your urges, it won't make a bit of difference.

Try telling drug addicts and smokers that "self-control" can help them. What I have is a legitimate addiction. My hands practically move on my own when this happens to me. If self-control was going to work for me, I wouldn't be back here again.

And I can just copy+paste the random sequence of keys. I'll enter it into a wordpad doc, copy it, paste it into the "password" field, paste it into the "confirm password" field, and paste it over to my friend. I've done something like this before. It works.

Self-control is the main thing they teach in rehab clinics.

Also my dad and my husband both quit smoking. Both quit without drugs, or without anyone tying them down so that they couldn't smoke. They used self-control :)

I hate to say this but, Net Nanny:
"Net Nanny is known as the best porn blocker and is also the most highly-rated parental controls software of all time."

I once found a copy of this in my Family Home, I replaced its cd with a blank cdr, I still have the software lying around somewhere lol

Not sure if this will help or anything as im not sure of the legitimacy of most of these videos but it could be a start.

Also yes it does require self-control to beat an addiction.  Some of us know people who have been able to beat their addictions through self control.  My father being an alcoholic and drug addict for 40 years must use self control on a daily basis to keep himself from getting locked up.  My stepfather uses self control daily and it has kept him from wanting to touch a beer in 20 years.  Excuses are like assholes; We all have them and nobody wants to hear them.  Do what you need to beat your addiction, whatever it is, but self control is the #1 way to do it because there may be a time you are able to do whatever it is you do when you are away from your home computer and you wont have the option to install some BS software.

It's not a porn site.
Regardless, I don't think the program will say "oops this isn't a porn site, you're not allowed to block this."

You should shoot up some black tar heroin and get back to us once you want to stop.

Abstinence plus change equals recovery. If you don't change your people, places, and things, then you'll never stop. Get rid of your computer. Seriously. Get rid of it.

This is also really stupid logic.

I felt the same way when he argued with me about different things to try when troubleshooting his many other problems.  Seems to me like a lot of cries for attention.

At this point, I can only suggest him to do his own research because most of the suggestions have only been turned down and I'm afraid to see what he says about the video I posted.

Throw your computer away.

Must be Cracked; every time I go there I waste up to ten hours looking at bullshit. My productivity literally plummets every time I go there.

On the other hand, I only go there once every few months... so there's that. Same deal with TVTropes.

By the way, that self-control thing is not enough. It takes honesty, open mindedness, willingness, accountability, spirituality, acceptance and surrender. Sure, maybe I could stop using on self-control, but I'd still be the same miserable addict who picked up drugs in the first place. Who wants that? Eventually, I will pick up again. But by having others to help me, and taking an honest look at myself, and then working on the defects that I have, not only does the obsession and compulsion to use go away, but I become the man that I want to be.

Seriously, half measures avail nothing. Looking for a password program will only make it take longer for you to do what you're going to do. Get with other people who have similar issues, find the ones who are now living how you wish to live, and do what they do. All of what they do.

Locking this, TL;DR

Multiple solutions given, None accepted....

Just want to add here that I never meant to imply that self-control alone would solve your issues. And I apologize for giving that impression.

Listen to Holk, the Holk knows .-.
