Title: [Visual] Revtattertot's Artwork

Sketchbook Art

Spoiler for:
This first one is a split-screen I did of 2 characters for a concept of mine. On one side is the male character, Martin, and on the other side is the female character, Arryanna. The style is a mixture of Yuu's and Mark's drawing style, plus some minor touch-ups on my part, like the more anime-style eyes.

This next one's another OC I did, with special attention to the hair and eyes. I couldn't modify it the way I wanted, which kinda pissed me off as an artist, because I lost 3 hours of work on it.

this one I'll classify as a quick creation, but it's another female character [should probably do a guy next]. This one has pig-tails, has glassy eyes, has some awful big bangs coming down, and is wearing a long sleeved shirt, and a shawl.
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1153.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp516%2FTatton_Ray%2FSnapshot_20120506_1.jpg&hash=c40577e085cf3a10d12ef0c52bb782567abc2b1a)

Another school girl! this one's a placeholder for either until I get my artwork for a story I'm doing done or if you guys like this.

So...
...Yeah. Post feedback if you want to. Since this is a style I want to say I have mastered [makes doing facesets a little easier, since I can just cut & paste, resize, and profit], and since people seem to like it, I'll continue posting artworks here from time to time. That spoiler will contain my own internet portfolio.

Whoa, damn those are pretty good :)

Do you know how to colour them as well?

Yes I do, but when I tried, GIMP froze up on me so I lost ALL THAT DETAIL. That's why I put it up in black & white.

I hope you plan on trying to color them in again.

I know that they will look very nice :D

Not to sound like a douche, strike, but the nearest art store is like 3 miles away. [P.S.: Don't, EVER, live in Lawton. It is a ghetto!] While it'd be good exercise for me, I literally leave school after my P.E. class, so I'm sore as hell when I get home. After that, laziness kicks in and I slouch. This plus I'm broke ATM = no good art supplies.

Then use some printer paper.
Also, it wouldn't hurt to study up on anatomy a bit.

Then use some printer paper.

It's an even toss-up by this point.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to study up on anatomy a bit.

I have been studying, but I am gonna say this in terms of style:

When it come to anime, a person's style can be based off of any type of proportions they deem fit for the story. Some like the Chibi look, like the guy who drew the panels for Lucky Star. Others like more realism in the anime, like the guy who drew DeathNote. There are still other who take a mix of these styles, like the person who did the Majutsu/Kagaku series.

In terms of anatomy, I can partially agree, because it makes setting the features easier and can make body proportions more accurate. It isn't the greatest issue, however, because some people like the anime/manga look. Again, however, it's open to interpretation. So I'm not gonna fight to the death on this one.

Thank you for the advice, Clopin. However, I probably wil not take all of it into heart due to resource constraints and context of the drawings.

[P.S.: Please do not call me a douche on this one, as I was merely stating my opinion. I truly do appreciate the advice, constructive or otherwise, I just responeded in a way to provide some greater detail on the subject.]

The anime and manga artists don't ever, ever just freehand anything of that nature. The correct nature of the look is still built upon by being anatomically proportioned. It's a matter of the way you proportion or the details added after make it a certain stylization. Just winging it isn't making your own proportions.

No they don't, but when it comes to concept art or sketchbook drawings, some details are free-handed to create a base to develop until the actual anime/manga look is created. I understand your reasoning behind this 100%, and again agree partially.

When I said what I said in the last post, I meant to imply that these artists start between concept sketches to place the poses and get the idea of the detail, then use what they learned in anatomy to set the details in the right place. Some parts of the anatomical structure, however, are distorted in certain techniques, like adding highlights in the eyes, supersizing them, supersizing the head, minimizing the nose and mouth, lowering the placement of the ears, the list goes on.

I don't think you understand how it works.

Anatomy isn't just for detail placement. It shapes the whole body.

Go here (http://www.mangatutorials.com/). It's a site with anatomy help from a manga perspective. I think it would help you.

Anatomy has been touched upon already, but I think it's far more important for you to learn where eyes and noses are supposed to go. It looks like someone stuck them on a face, blind-folded, in that last drawing.

I do kinda see that. [Insert overused saying here]

Thank you, Clopin, for the help.

I don't think you understand how it works.

I have seen some artists go in that direction, but that may be me. Just to ask: how many paths can you think of to get to the authentic look, other than copying or tracing.

You get an authentic look through years of studying human motion and anatomy. Copying and tracing isn't teaching you anything, it just makes you dependant on the style of others. Read and study her link instead if you want to be unique in execution and not co-dependant on other artists.

I was actually about to post in here. I have a couple on standby, but one is cg and one is traditional. Which do you prefer?

Why post one when you can do both ??? :)
