Title: Should I Use Voice In My Next Game
Post by: moobob9 on June 21, 2010, 12:53:56 AM
I was thinking about a sequel to my so-far unfinished game, when I thought of a cool idea: what if I use voice instead of text in my next game? I know how I would do this, but I just want to ask anyone reading this. Please post your opinion about voice in my next game. Is it a good idea, or is it not a good idea?

Also, there is a poll above here for you to vote!

No, you shouldn't. Voice acting is hard; a lot of games with professional voice actors do it badly too. A game with bad voice acting is a lot worse than a game with just text, and aside from which, I think the appeal of RM games is in that they are kind of retro, and even if you have good voice acting it will be incongruous with the fact that its 2D.

Anyway, you shouldn't be thinking about a sequel before finishing what you have now.

I think MA is right about the retro aspect, but if you have enough splash anime images, a good story arc, and some decent sound recordings, you can do it. I think it kind of worked for some games, although I have to caution against using voice for repeated battle commands or spells. I recommend looking to old streetfighter games for ideas on how to keep voices brief.

If you're looking for voice actors you can check Newgrounds' Forum.

I'm definitely going to have to make the game REALLY good before I add voice acting anyway. I think I'll consider it......

If you DO do voice acting, hit up some actual voice acting forums that specialize. I know of a few forums that have a medley of professionals. If you ask, most of them will do stuff for free mostly so that they can add that project into their own sound demos for more work.

Anyways, a good video game voice actor is hard to come by especially if the story of the game sucks. Also, the number of audio files needed would severely rape the file size of the final game.
