You still use TabIt? I can't bring myself to anymore, it seems almost archaic :/

btw, impressive as per usual.

I use it as a sketch pad, or a starting point. The interface for Finale and Sibelius are cripplingly slow compared to how fast I can get an idea down in TabIt, and if I don't get my ideas down quickly it destroys my creative flow.

Hey guys, I got a 5 on my AP Music Theory exam ;8 Even though it's probably due to the humongous AP curve I received (because I just suppose everyone ELSE in the country is just dumber than I am rather than me being smart... seriously), I feel like I haven't learned anything useful in composing music. ;9 This kinda sucks. I mean, I got one OK piece that was, liek, a few measures, but, heck, I could have just done that on my own.

 Ryarleber, stop having the colleges hide the good stuffs from us highschoolers.

You can't "teach" composition. You have to learn through experience. Studying under another composer is really the only way to be "taught" how to be a better composer, the rest is just trial, error, and experience. But even then, all I ever did in my composition courses was bring in what I was working on, and have the teacher look at it. He'd say "this is good" or "this part's confusing, I'm not sure what you were trying to say, here," or "this reminds me of _____, you should read this book/watch this movie for some extra inspiration" and stuff like that. And that was immensely helpful for me.

It's not like you sit down and be like "okay, write a string quartet. Go!"

Things you can teach: Theory and Orchestration.

lol. I see... :( I just hate my creative side, though. Seriously - the only time anything remotely decent pops into my head is RIGHT before I go to sleep while I'm lying in bed. And I don't have the willpower to get up and put it down on anything because I just need to sleep, lol. And I'm not good at putting my thoughts onto paper (or computer?) so that kills me. ;9

I love the wording you do in your posts sometimes, lol. Like the "this part's confusing I'm not sure what you were trying to say here." I just love how your music conveys words, lol.

Whether it's obvious or subtle, all music conveys something. Most of my music conveys a story, or alternately a contained period of time, or sometimes just an emotion.

Hence the soundtrack of a movie is used to control the audience, to try to make you feel what they want to you feel about the given scene. Example for Arlen's piece here, I think he wants a sense of comedy that you only enjoy when you're drunk. :V

I kid, I love it. :3

I was better at composing in Tabit when I didn't know anything about keys or chords or music theory. But now I can't do anything in Tabit, and most of my recent music with either audio-in from my keyboard or Milkytracker isn't that fantastic. ;9

I'm getting better with practice though.

I love my nanokey :) it makes getting ideas down so much easier.
