Title: Original Sprites
Post by: Honenya on June 12, 2010, 04:54:34 PM
Can anybody make me some character face sets and matching sprites?

I started a new game because my brother and so called "best friend" started making fun of my game.

A little background information about the characters is that their uniforms are green and they where berets (green berets of course).

I could probably do the work with the sprites, but I'm not so good with facesets. there is a thread, I am positive, with an amazing faceset making member taking requests.

Since I also replied to your post on How many maps to be making, I know that your brother seems to be antagonizing your game making. I would like to suggest not listening to him and doing it like you enjoy, whichever way it is. Since it does not seem he is giving you constructive criticism, why not post some screen shots, or better yet teh demo game, and the people here would be more than happy to help you out.

Well, I can't release a demo  beacuse I don't have everything onm my world map.

He told me this "People like graphikal will crack down on you for this."
He also said my maps suck, and my best friends are way better.

Where would I post some comparison screenshots?

Tell your brother to shut his mouth. You shouldn't really listen to `tards like that, Honenya. Let's seem them do better :<

Well, that can be changed and improved. Everyone starts off that way. You can look at tutorials or take classes at other forums :)

You should listen to Savarast's help post: don't listen to your brother :C

I am going to assume yoru brother is a member here. Well, either way, don't worry too much about use RTP-stuff. Worst case scenario, you can switch out the tileset/faceset/sprites/etc later on.

You can post some screens here, it is on topic. I think there is also a specific area for screenshots also, but they are sometimes savage there.

if you post your work, then don't flip out and get butthurt when someone criticizes you, nobody will crack down on you for anything.

we have these sections for people to learn, and it's just the people who think they're perfect and take criticism as insult that have issues.

that being said, let's see what you can do, can't help you improve if you don't show what you already know.

Okay, I'll get some screenshots in.

It;s not the best, but it is not all that bad.

Naw, his brother refuses to do it because he sees Honenya trying to post all sorts of BAWWW just because he got a wee bit of criticism.

I would have done all of the facesets for him, but then he went and started being an ass just because I said his woods map needed some work. It was Billy Bullshot-esque.

Of course, Namkcor remembers that nonsense.

The map is rather basic. You need to make it a little more livelier, and cut down on the repeats of the flowers next to one another. That alone is a big no; maybe one or two, diagonally or a space or two away from each is perfect, but never more than two right next to each other. At least, that's what I think.
I would suggest breaking up the big groups of trees a little, and adding little bits grass and flowers in those areas. More flowers, some rocks, fallen leaves (which I am particularly fond of :D) and maybe even some dead trees. I like to put dead trees surrounded by some fallen leaves.
True, in real life, forests usually are very dense, but in RPG maker it looks strange to use so many trees all next to one another, without stuff (like grass and flowers, for example) breaking them up a bit.

You're also missing (what I presume to be) a player transfer at bottom-left of your map. The top of trees are set to the star property (but I forget what it's called) which means you can walk under them, and therefore should be able to transfer to the tile.

Yeah the mapping definitely needs loads of work.

Why would there be a beaten path like that?  A grass-less dirt path results from the regular passage of people, or was created to make passage easier, that just looks irregular and thus weird.

The flowers at the bottom look contrived, nature is random, not organized like that.  Trees organized in straight lines don't really work either.  Nature doesn't work in straight lines.

Here's a good mapping tutorial by Shadow (http://rmrk.net/index.php/topic,24419.0.html)

there's also one by grafikal floating around but I can't find it.

I see what you mean.

I made everything too organized?

And the path someone did put there, I just didn't make the map for it.

Oh and What do I do if I don't want the player to go to a spot that doesn't lead any where?
You know it's that spot on the bottom with no transfer. I did want to cover it with trees, but it would be forest like would it?

Just leave it as it is.

on its own, the path on that map looks random, irregular, and basically nonsensical.  also VX mapping isn't about big open spaces or larger maps with lots of ground detail like XP mapping seems to be.  VX has smaller sprites, smaller tiles, and smaller screen resolution, which makes it look better if the maps are more compact and thus compressing the detail.

just don't make it look like an exit.
