Title: What would be a good pace at making your game?
Post by: Honenya on June 03, 2010, 11:28:42 PM
I just thought I would ask how much of your game should be made at a time.

I am currently doing mine at three maps a day, but my brother tells me that is not good enough.

So any opinion, how much do you do?

3 maps a day is more than I ever do.

Errr, 3 map a day? Thats more than enough. It is honestly quality over quantity. You could in truth be making 20 a day, and they could all suck.

Lets see, I will choose one map to make. I will then lay out the basic form, add details, put events, and finally test. If testing fails, I start over , fixing errors as I found them.

I would suggest one full map a day (meaning, if lets say it is a city, you also complete the small interiors), do that 5 days a week, and you are doing great. Each day, you should also develop some of the character history, develop teh story, work on unique sprites and tiles, and finally, playtest.

BTW, I am back from my... year long hiatus! Yay me!

To put in perspective, I am restarting my RPGXP game making, but I am unpleased with many of my maps, hence, reemapping. Take the time to make the maps you make worth your time.

Also, any screens of your maps? We could comment and suggest things if you like.

Well, my brother keeps talking crap about how many maps he makes a day.

He makes like five a day.

Savarast's sig is awesome.

Do it at your own pace; RPG making is for the fun and enjoyment, not a race to see how much you can make in how long.

Thanks, that helps.

And not in a sarcastic way because it kind of looks like it.

Make each session as meaningful as possible without trying to cram too much bullshit into it.

If you make it a competition with your brother, then game making will become an obligation and it wont be fun anymore, stop while you can.

I think that 3 maps a day is a bit too much, especially if you are working at it every day! You sure would have a good long game, but you need to focus on how much work you put into your maps instead of how many maps. Hope I helped!

Wait, how many maps does your brother make a day?

It varies. Sometimes I do up to five, other times I do none. I haven't made any maps recently because I have been working on resources.
