Title: Quick question, sorry if wrong forum
Post by: Darth Grievous on August 14, 2009, 02:50:14 AM
RMRK provides downloads for rpgmaker, but I heard somwhere that they are illegal, is this true?  I know XP and VX are avalible to buy, so I would assume that the free downloads are illegal.  But as far as I know, 2k3 and befor were never released in America, so are they okay?

Well, VX and XP downloads located on Crankeye are both the trial versions of those programs, and members are not allowed to post the keygen for those programs. So neither of those are free downloads.

2K and 2K3 - I'm not sure. I think they're technically illegal, but there is no official English version for any of the makers pre-RMXP, and so I know it's not enforced.

That's a good question. The downloads of XP and VX that we provide aren't exactly free, since you only have a 30 day demo period before you have to buy the program. 2k3 is set up the same way, but it was never officially translated into English. What people download for free I believe is a fan translation of the program. This is technically an illegal distribution, but I doubt Enterbrain cares at all. They can't expect an English audience to buy a program in a language they don't understand, it's outdated, and it does help promote the newer versions that are translated.

Mind you, I could be completely wrong. I mostly use XP, not 2k3.
