Title: New Computer Build (HTPC Media Center) For the new T.V
Post by: :) on July 30, 2009, 02:25:33 PM
soooo....not that anyone noticed I wasn't as active this summer, I need a few explanations

We recently got our second gas station; however, its about 1hour 30min drive away from our home. Because the market is so low we can't really afford our new market value therefor we can't sell this house and move out there ;o

Because of that I've been staying there in an APT we rented for four days a week with my parents working and helping, and three days back at home relaxing (not to mention include driving back and forth)

My dad wants to make the place like home for us as much as possible so he walked through the door last week with a new 50something inch mitsubishi t.v with 16 speakers (http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/08/mitsubishi-introduces-16-speaker-unisen-lcd-hdtv-line/) :x

(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.blogcdn.com%2Fwww.engadgethd.com%2Fmedia%2F2009%2F04%2F153_series-mitsubishi-hdtv.jpg&hash=2ea64c78ae2e40212c52154bfa0e1e88e678d0ae)

so to make it all that much better he's letting me build an HTPC that sits below the t.v running boxee over windows and function as a computer if the need arises - and here's the parts I've ordered: (its low budget :3)

Case: Antec something with power supply (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129034)
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fc1.neweggimages.com%2FNeweggImage%2FProductImageCompressAll200%2F11-129-034-02.jpg&hash=75a76c30f57996aed475bf92928c8d2f2296b1f2)

Mobo: Asus  GeForce 8200 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard (no dedicated video card in this build, but still needed something with HDMI (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131318)
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages17.newegg.com%2Fis%2Fimage%2Fnewegg%2F13-131-318-TS%3F%24S180W%24&hash=d5b189ce570f75221f57a23223470807957af3e2)

Processor: AMD Athlon X2 7850 Black Edition Kuma 2.8GHz Socket AM2+ 95W Dual-Core Processor (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103678)
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fc1.neweggimages.com%2FNeweggImage%2FProductImageCompressAll200%2F19-103-678-02.jpg&hash=9d1f5dc84c0a4aac6f2f8b127164fdb7eefe9342)

HD: WD 250gb (actually its a replacement for another computer, so it'll have 1tb most likely) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136113)
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fc1.neweggimages.com%2FNeweggImage%2FProductImageCompressAll200%2F22-136-113-07.jpg&hash=6936fade4127863844b3009a3abaa70b4a8f97dd)

Ram: Kingston 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 I forgot to look if it was dual channel ;o prob ordering a replacement (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134797)
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fc1.neweggimages.com%2FNeweggImage%2FProductImageCompressAll200%2F20-134-797-03.jpg&hash=5ba7aba4c449a6962f29c282308cb2c97094b606)

CD/DVD Burner: (until he says I can order a blu-ray drive, not like I care for one ;o) Samsung something (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151175)
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fc1.neweggimages.com%2FNeweggImage%2FProductImageCompressAll200%2F27-151-175-06.jpg&hash=5196e0579a2e817db7e2c5666ce5e2ab2205d179)

and a HDMI wire (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812816002)
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fc1.neweggimages.com%2FNeweggImage%2FProductImageCompressAll200%2F12-816-002-03.jpg&hash=1fab085ef15fcca5340c51ee84bde99476907a1b)

Order Total     $392.33 nice and cheap, it may not be the best bang for buck as im sure 100% if I asked here i'd have a better build but I had about 20 mins to throw it together and place the order.

I'll take pics when it comes and its hooked up (if I don't just rip it open like I usually do ;o)

Yayyyyy Boxes (though everything BUT the processor and dvd drive came)
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg518.imageshack.us%2Fimg518%2F1%2Fimg0275r.th.jpg&hash=f9bc4a38141135241aa8680b37336c2eabbb2a2e) (http://img518.imageshack.us/i/img0275r.jpg/)

Case is actually better than expected. Power supply is sufficient and has good wire management.
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg165.imageshack.us%2Fimg165%2F1724%2Fimg0277o.th.jpg&hash=f732d26e38198f75d096cba3cdb69047d6983e1e) (http://img165.imageshack.us/i/img0277o.jpg/)

Moboooo
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg165.imageshack.us%2Fimg165%2F9030%2Fimg0278c.th.jpg&hash=4b5b362f12197876cb244b2cca6497d786c00e20) (http://img165.imageshack.us/i/img0278c.jpg/)

Mobo Installed :3
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg518.imageshack.us%2Fimg518%2F192%2Fimg0280k.th.jpg&hash=6fd317d2c3c2123d63f0f0138595e8ede2f420e5) (http://img518.imageshack.us/i/img0280k.jpg/)

HD
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg29.imageshack.us%2Fimg29%2F702%2Fimg0284juk.th.jpg&hash=76ef409a0d892ff3bf7f4b9b06152f515b488d82) (http://img29.imageshack.us/i/img0284juk.jpg/)

All I can say about the HD compartment is WOW. Good layout, drives are mounted sideways to allow better cooling. Also, screws are put through rubber mounts before entering the drive making it sit on four rubber mounts to keep them put.
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg29.imageshack.us%2Fimg29%2F7025%2Fimg0285fol.th.jpg&hash=f359d5f90d86055b2d95a84f7f4b391ba20cf08c) (http://img29.imageshack.us/i/img0285fol.jpg/)

End of day one, mobo installed, hardrive in, ram in.
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg165.imageshack.us%2Fimg165%2F9869%2Fimg0287v.th.jpg&hash=11cbcd1c2574299a1918a95d930b60e99cf3ce95) (http://img165.imageshack.us/i/img0287v.jpg/)

Dayyyy 2. After a weekend and a day I get my second shipment of boxes. I actually rushed through opening everything so not very much a story ;o
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg441.imageshack.us%2Fimg441%2F1505%2Fimg0289c.th.jpg&hash=fd0581456952600a27b90508fad264a3f8408350) (http://img441.imageshack.us/i/img0289c.jpg/)
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg526.imageshack.us%2Fimg526%2F158%2Fimg0290v.th.jpg&hash=c77868bbc216a26233e78e68eeb814b035f432ef) (http://img526.imageshack.us/i/img0290v.jpg/)
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg188.imageshack.us%2Fimg188%2F8821%2Fimg0291dcf.th.jpg&hash=4ec058dc26020cf9da2cf7ecaac69178f26fd130) (http://img188.imageshack.us/i/img0291dcf.jpg/)

next to the beast.
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg441.imageshack.us%2Fimg441%2F3131%2Fimg0295h.th.jpg&hash=422e8234869e8618b28c631af7e03ef911cb966c) (http://img441.imageshack.us/i/img0295h.jpg/)

Conclusion:
Works GREAT. Onboard video does 1080i with my HDMI cable perfectly. Windows 7 loads and looks a beauty on 52 inches. Speeds are great, design fits perfectly in the T.V table.

All in all a good buy. Somethings I'd change would be a processor that doesn't get 95 watts. ;o it's an HTPC not a powerhouse so it shouldn't need to generate that much heat and power. I'd also pay attention to the ram I buy and get 2x1gb dual channel next time.

and thats itttt.
I'll write back later with software and real time info.

keyboard and mouse for now.

So far so good, except it won't recognize LOST season two episodes 1-9, but lists the rest perfectly with summery, details, and all that goooood stuff.

I have a motherboard with the Geforece 8200, it's pretty decent. Personally I've had no trouble with it but it's not exactly the best if you're going to keep gaming on a pc for a couple years or so...but this is for a media center so I doubt you want an 8800.
