The mesh tool and the gradient tool are the best ways to do skin tones.

if I wanted to learn how to use livetrace then I wouldn't have done this. I wanted to practice vectoring >:(
its better to vector anyways. livetrace blends colors together. For instance, if you had a 40 color image and live traced it to a 6 color image, illustrator would take the average 6 colors and use them to color everything. If you vector, you can choose the colors that fit best :P
yeah, I used it once, but the image I used it on was already vectored (just in flash and saved as a png) so it wasn't such a huge deal.
