Title: Speech bubble tuts?
Post by: T.R.U.T.H on January 27, 2009, 02:24:31 AM
Can anyone recommend a good tutorial for making character speech bubbles? I am new to RMXP ???  Also, information on creating/editing sprites, changing the player avatar graphic, and creating cutscenes would be much appreciated.

I figured out how to make my own characters since my last post, but maybe you are a better artist than I am. I need some suns and moons for a space scene. If you could help out, that would be great. Thx. I am only using the trial version of RMXP, so I'm not sure I'll be able to finish my game, but If so, I'll be sure to give you credit.

I'd also like to combine tilesets, if possible, and or/create a new tileset or item that allows me to put fruit(s) on trees.
But back to my first question. can ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO MAKE SPEECH BUBBLES? (Scripting is OK). :'(

In the future, please use the Edit button rather than double posting. Thank you~

What do you mean by "speech bubbles"? There are no speech bubbles as I understand them in the game by default, but you could get ccoa's UMS and that might be what you're looking for. But how can I help if I don't know what you're asking for?

As for combining tilesets, there is a Tutorial in the Database by ChaosSpartan I believe.

They might not be in the program by default, but I know It's possible, because a friend of mine did it. Maybe through the animation editor? I don't know. I just wondered if anyone else did, because they are much more attractive than text boxes.

OK, well try ccoa's UMS then and see if that's what you want. It should be on rpgrevolution.com. Though, you should ask your friend. You could technically do it with events if you had a ton of pictures.

To change player graphic in-game, all you need to do is go to Set Move Route: Change Graphic. It's an event command. Or, if you are talking about at the start of the game, you can change player graphic through the Database where you set up actor information.

problem is, my friend lives 400 mi away, I don't know his email, and he hasn't posted here for a long time (maybe he changed his handle?). But what are UMS? And who or what is ccoa?

UMS means Universal Message System. Ccoa is the creator of the UMS. Just search for it in rpgrevolution.com.

ccoa's UMS is great, but it's not quite what I was looking for, unless I can figure out how to get the icon of the character to show up in the text box. Modern Algebra, your event idea sounds good, but how do I get a picture to show up in rmxp? I''ve tried, but it cuts off all but a small corner of whatever picture i try to get to show. What type does it have to be (.png,.gif,.btmp)? Or is there another issue, and how might I fix it?

cuts off? No tht shouldn't happen ~ I usually use png files but I wouldn't imagine any other format would be problematic. The only thing I can think of is that you are importing your picture into the Characters folder or something. Import them into the Pictures folder and you can use the Show Picture event command to show them.

But: the pictures idea is the worst idea ever. Not only would you have to position it every time, but you'd have to have a bajillion pictures, increasing your game size to beyond reasonable.

As for the UMS, why would you need the icon of the character to appear in the text box when it's right over his head?

Maybe I don't know how to use the UMS correctly, I haven't figured out how to do that. But then too, ccoa removed his latest script from rpg revolution, and the version I downloaded is not the most current. As for the pictures, I still haven't figured it out. Conversely to what you suggested the problem may be, it works when I show a picture as a character , but not when I use the regular "show picture" command. I'll fiddle with it and see if I can figure it out.

On another random sidetrack, I was just curious, is there any way or any version of rpg maker that uses a hexagonal movement system rather than squares? The square system is cool, but hexes are better. The reason:

(never mind, first I've got to figure out how to post images on this thing...)

but I'll try to explain. Imagine a set of four small movement squares making up a larger square. It takes two moves for the player to get from the top right (or left) corner to the adjacent bottom left(or right) corner. With a hex system, the character can use a single move to reach any adjacent tile. A hex system is also more useful in determining the effects of spells, because it more easily fits a circular radius.
