Title: College Daze (IT IS CLEVER PLAY ON WORDS!)
Post by: Yossy on September 11, 2006, 04:04:20 PM
As most of you know, I have entered my first semester of college.  Excuse me whilst I rant.

You may have already guessed that my major is art.  My "dream job" is to become a character designer.  Now, I am not going to say that the art program of this school is of poor quality.  It is probably embarassingly likely that this is a problem present in every school all across the nation.  As every day of classes goes by, I am becoming increasingly persuaded that the purpose of art classes is to suppress one's imagination.  Ex.: Draw that arrangement of vases, exactly as you see it.  Use this particular and precise method.  No, no, you're doing it all wrong.  Do it this way.

This, of course, does not apply solely to art classes.  Any among you who possesses an interest in writing will agree with me when I say that writing assignments do very little to express who you are, or your favored "style" of writing.  Essays come easily to me, but as much as I try to incorporate my humor or personality, there remains to be a certain blandness to it.  There is also apparently a proportion among creativity and the actual grade you receive on the assignment.  The more imagination you reveal, the lower your grade.  Is there a name for this phenomenon?

I haven't drawn a single thing for myself since this semester started, two weeks ago.  By the point that I have time for myself, there's no telling how my muse might have suffered.

Conclusively, I am slowly dying.

;D So, how's school going for you guys?

Sounds like a music school. But the thing is, they don't often tell you this, but the whole point of that (in music schools) is "learning all the rules before you're allowed to break them." Maybe it doesn't apply to art in the same way, but I can sympathize with the whole "supression of imagination" feeling you're getting.

But hey, we both know that the market has room for both cookie cutter, stereotyped art, and imaginitive, fresh art, so just keep at it the way they want you to, draw for yourself every now and then, and don't let them cramp your style.

I know a little bit about both music and art, and I think it applies in an all too similar way. Classes are to teach you how to handle your subject with skill, and, of course, tell everyone that you can handle your subject with skill once you've graduated. They do not, and cannot, teach you creativity. That is kinda your own thing~ Like arlen said, you gotta take time to do it for yourself sometimes.

~Hang in there! You're doing great!

School is very fine for me. I love it. Thanks for asking.

I don't really know how you feel because creative coding rocks. The teacher think so too.

Still... Hang in there!
Maybe you should seperate your own writing and what you is taught.
Later you could put your creativity over the knowledge obtained and choose whatever method feels best.
I don't really know tho...

Just Hang in there. I know you can do it!

That's ridiculous that she thinks she can do that.

One of the perks about college is that I can use the school's computers for visiting the forums (LIKE I AM RIGHT NOW) and no one can get mad at me. ;)

Thank you all for your support!  I'm a strong soul.  I'll survive somehow.

Hopefully all of the art classes you take throughout your college career won't be so "oppressive" as what you described above.

I'm sure things will be getting better. You'll get inspired to start drawing again; you may just be burnt out on it right now.

And you can always show us your art and expect good comments about it, and not being told that's not the way you should be doing it. ;)

Sometimes, it seems, the teacher is the one who needs to be taught. Whether you notice or not the teacher (maybe this doesn't apply so much to college) but the teacher is always learning to teach. Certain ways, unfortunately, are not always so effective and the teacher will examine and tweak until the ever changing needs of the student are finally satisfied. Though not all teachers are not this way (believe me, i know a whole slew  :-\) the few who are make a profound impact.

This all comes from a recent conversation I had with a previous English teacher. It was interesting to hear her explain the way shes teaches and the changes shes made from previous years. She really took the time to understand our learning process and how each method of teaching effected us. Although, she laments, feigning the importance of teaching the student about him/herself rather than teaching only the tools. If the tools are there to use,  but no one to use them, have fun trying to plow the field.

So I say, press onward Miss Yossy, and lay gracefully. Remember, your paying for it. it this guy/girl is a bloke, drop that shit.  :P
