Left 4 Dead is a multiplayer cooperative survival horror shooter in development by Valve Corporation based on the Source engine. There are two sides, the Survivors and Infected. Four players control the four Survivors, working their way through campaigns in rural and urban areas, fighting off dozens of the AI-controlled "infected" (fast, 28 Days Later style zombies). On top of the regular zombies, there are four player-controlled "boss zombies" all with unique powers for causing chaos. This mix of the dozens of AI-controlled infected zombies and the boss zombies makes for an entirely fresh co-op experience. Release is scheduled for the PC and Xbox 360 on November 18, 2008 in the U.S. and November 21, 2008 in Europe.[1]

Game Modes
[spoiler]
SINGLE PLAYERFor those without an internet connection, make your way through the campaigns alongside three AI-controlled Survivor bots. Also recommended for those that like to give people headaches by team killing.
CAMPAIGNWork together to survive the zombie apocalypse. You and three friends (or strangers) hook up online through Steam or Xbox Live and take the roles of four Survivors battling against the Infected horde and AI-controlled boss zombies. This is pure survival on four different difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, Advanced, and Expert.
Campaign mode is the ultimate co-op experience for anybody.
VERSUSVersus mode is a completely different beast. This mode is aimed at those thirsty for human vs human competition. Four human players play as the Survivors and face off against four human players playing the boss infected. The boss infected players spawn 20 seconds after they are killed in combat, being able to choose their spawn location by walking around as a ghost until they find the perfect ambush spot. This quick spawn time makes Versus mode absolutely brutal to the Survivor team. On top of that, the only place where Survivors are able to respawn is at the next map.
Just like campaign mode, you choose a specific campaign to play through. The first team plays as the Survivors through the first map until they reach the end or until they all die off. The two teams switch spots, so the former Survivors are now acting as the boss infected and the former boss infected are now playing as the Survivors. After the map is completed, scores are tallied based on various factors and the cycle repeats on the next map in the campaign. This continues all the way until the finale map is completed for both sides, at which point the final score is shown and a victor declared.
Versus mode is currently the only mode where human players can choose to play as the boss infected.[1]

Mods?

What updates are planned for after release, and will the community be able to mod it? - From Valve's Michael Booth in an interview with Firingsquad.com:
We already have ideas for additional missions, features, and content that we hope to ship in future releases/updates to Left 4 Dead. In addition, an L4D-specific update will be made to the Source SDK so members of the community can make their own missions, characters, and L4D MOD content.[1]
YES, MODS

the matchmaker is kinda crappy and I hope they get rid of it or fix it or something but other than that the game is great.
I'll have to play more to work up an actual review with complete thoughts, but...
The game was so good I totally forgot I had chinese food sitting next to me.

If my computer could handle this I would so have an orgasm all over it. ._______.

you can headshot with anything, they all go boom and splat :3
No like, I was in the subway, and I saw a zombie on top of a train on the otherside of a tunnel, and I shot at him, and his head exploded, it was atleast 40-50 feet away

ah, well umm....maybe you just got lucky and one of the shots from the spread happened to brain him ?_?
oh yeah, I totally forgot.
in b4 zombie mod
Zombie mod
downloading the demo now
So are they going to come out with mods for this that change the zombies back to living people? Also, it would be great to have a mod for this in a school shooter version. Boomers = fat guys puking on you, there are the muscled jock users, normal people just running at (or from) you to stop you. I think it would be fun as shit.
hmm, looks like a nice game
I'll probably get the demo =D
though i'm like against violence and zombie slaughter.

uh huh...
So. I've realized just now that EVERYONE I associate myself with is a mod/extra access/some elitist title. And I am not ;9
Also, namkcor, I was just saying it would work out well.
you can associate with me <3
EXTRA ACCESS. And I counted you already.
yes but still <3
Oh fine <3

I don't know if I want to download this game, or wait a year and buy it... hmmm.
game is out, gonna be playing it all week, and if you join my steam group, I'm looking to drop some cash for a server or two for our own use, so if you'd like to donate I'd <3.

So I'm hearing from pretty much everywhere that the versus mode actually kind of sucks.
I haven't played it yet, but I know why a lot of people say it sucks.
Infected can't outright maul the survivors.
As in, a lone hunter can't take out a survivor, you can only do a portion of damage. The point of the infected isn't to kill the survivors in combat, it's to heckle and grief them and cause damage that adds up and adds up and adds up and eventually wears them down. It's to cause chaos to break them up from each other so that it's easier to cause damage.
People were expecting it to be a TF2 equivalent, where the infected would be able to maul survivors if they were good enough. This isn't the case, and that's why they don't like it.
Now, that's all conjecture based on the reasonings and whinings I've seen around the internet ("wtf the infected can't kill anything", etc...) but I'll tell you what I think when I play it.
Actually most posts I've seen are complaining that you can't be just Infected or just Survivor, you have to keep switching. There are also a lot of complaints about the scoring system, but that's probably just a lot of people complaining just for the sake of complaining, which seems to be the majority of complainers.
I don't have the game so I can't speak for myself, I just wanted input from someone here who actually does have it.
the switching makes sense if you ask me, it's like switching from offense to defense in a capture point game in Team Fortress 2.
people complain for the sake of it, I agree with you there.
I played versus just now and it was a blast, you basically get to just piss the survivors off for the whole game, and contrary to popular belief, it's actually quite effective when done right. I enjoyed myself.
your gameplay video is old it still shows louis as having the semi-afro thing going.
this game is epic. i got disapointed when i saw the hl2 cinder block however. tut tut reusing models...lol
anyway the detail in the scenery in this is immense. in blood harvest theres a cabin building thats a safehouse with a bucket with a toilet seat ontop complete with shit in the bucket. theres also cows.
matchmaking however sucks. theres so many shitty servers out there that i lag out of every other game. Lobby style matchmaking also allows idiots to run riot. I once was in a verses lobby full of players but the host was afk as a result everyone leaves. Some times people just dont stay in game long enough.
I also got votekicked for no reason by some french guy. A friend of mine was also in the game and survived the votekick to insult and pry the excuse that the french guy wanted to play with his friend. utter noob. desperatly looking for an admin mod and some better server structure style.

This seems to be the only legitimate complaint I can find that people are making about versus. And that's hopefully something that will be fixed in the very near future. It seems a lot of people quit too when they want to play infected but end up being human.
I'm looking forward to getting this. I don't want to get it for Xbox, but my computer can't run it so I don't have much of a choice, sans getting better processor and a better video card but I can't afford that and the game, so ;9
yeah, the matchmaker makes sense for this game/game concept, the implementation really just needs work.
If you guys are ever getting hung from behind while your team is 50 feet away, and they cant shoot the smoker because it is out of the line of fire, it's probably me <3
that doesn't happen cuz I stick close to my survivor buddies, so that when we get mobbed we can help each other quick :)
Oh you would think that, until two people are pounced, one of you is grabbed, and you're all vomited on.
that doesnt happen very often, considering it'd take a very perfect situation for it to actually occur
Yeah, but with my team of 4 friends as infected, it is how virtually every attack goes. We didn't let a fairly decent team we were playing against get past 2% in any level of No Mercy.
I wonder how you describe 'fairly decent'
That they tried to stick together, took almost no damage from normal zombies, and I'm fairly sure they could beat the campaign on expert.
I'd call shenanigans but w/e
