I'm thinking of making an rpg at some point, and I'd like to know what are the worst things in rpgmaker games. What's overdone in rpgmaker games. What do you hate? Music. Characters. Plot points. Battle Systems. Party Characters. Sidequests. Etc etc.
Please don't leave a typical response, like, "Anything involving 4 magic items (jewels, crystals, swords, wisemen of the 4 winds, etc)" or "Dragonball Z / Naruto rpgs", or "Final Fantasy XXIV" responses. They're vague and unhelpful. Please be specific.
Just doing some research =)
Thanks.
I guess I'll start. I hate how every villain wants to become a god. Then after becoming a god, they are killed by a breakable peice of steel.
I hate most RPGs with random encounters, especially if the frequency is set too high.
I agree with Pathbinder. Lots of Maker-games have loooong and tedious dungeons with battles every 10 steps. Stuff like that is fucking awful, never strive for that. And illogical and tedious puzzles are annoying too. You'll have to figure out what that one means by yourself though :3
Breath of Fire II was notoriously bad for bad encounters.
Hmm... I guess I' have to say how tedious it gets having to walk around forever training when you're stuck at a boss or something.
Or, in other words, training takes too long.
I dislike the recurring theme that Religion is evil.
Lol. The only 2 games I can think of (at the moment) that are like that are:
Tales of Symphonia
Lol, you end up fighting angels. And the Church of Martel (the main church) turns out to have a secret plot to resurrect the goddess Martel.
Tales of the Abyss
The Order of Lorelei (the main religious body in the game) has 6 "God-generals", who help the game's main antagonist Van (a Dorian General, who basically leads the God-generals) achieve his goal, which ultimately leads up to him trying to destroy all residents of the world.
Breath of Fire II:
The traditional "dragon" faith is abandoned for a newer widespread religion, whose god turns out to be the devil.
Xenogears:
The Ethos Church was part of a bigger lie to control the public.
Xenosaga:
The Roman Catholic Church is evil. In the second game, the final boss is the Pope.
Final Fantasy 10
The Yevon Church was a system of control.
Final Fantasy: Tactics
Ivalice's religion is evil. The game's Christ-figure turns out to be evil. You fight him/her in hell as the last boss.
You know, it's prolly a recurring theme because it is at least somewhat true. ;D
Religion has caused more problems than it's ever solved.
Bump.
What does everyone hate about rpgmaker games?
(I thought people would have more to complain about...).
Characters named Arshes.
The infinite amount of typographical and grammatical horrors.
Default windowskin.
no your character cannot save the world thats what annoys me most.
apart from that avoid:
Dictators for friendly npcs(HEY BOB GO DO THIS WHILE I DO NOTHING)
Still, Charcters named Arshes.
Christian references. Evil angels, evil demons for that matter, gratuitous Bible quotations. I did this one in an attempt to make my game cool, and I try not to look back on that incident.
when people leave the tilesets the same for every map, and make a world map out of the same tileset...

I don't think I've seen anything like that, but it'd be kinda hard to do an entire game using just the Grassland tileset in RMXP, when the only building choice there is is a tent. ;8
Too many random encounters once every 5 steps. Random battles that last 5 minutes a piece. Spikey haired protagonists that are loners but get paired with 3 friends. The side battle system is overrated. Impossible boss characters. Lack of save points, or once you save you are too weak to continue so you must restart.
