Does calling a common event instead of making the whole thing on the spot create less lag? (Less work needed for the game.)
I'm trying to place as many events on a map as possible without creating horrid lag.

If you can reduce the amounts of events on the map, then it will probably give less lag. It will however create more lag in all other maps, though that is most likely insignificant. Common events which must be called does not take much time to process while they are not called.
I suggest you conduct some tests to find out which works best.
