You could try reading tutorials on this board. Such as this one:

Please use search engine. You can also look at tutorials for RMXP that cover switches and variables, as they are almost unchanged. The one big difference is that self-switches do not exist in 2k/3

Switches are easy to understand.  Think of them as a switch to a light bulb.  A switch, unlike a variable, can only be turned on or off.  Switches are excellent for opening up custom menus, changing NPC dialogue, sparking events, and so forth.  Under SWITCH operations, you can change switches to ON, OFF, and even a TOGGLE ON/OFF command.

Variables are different from switches because they store values instead of just turning on or off.  Variables are useful for many miscellaneous events in the game like a bestiary for storing monster data and displaying the number slain.  Nevertheless  variables are useful when dealing with certain value of game play elements than binary elements.

ROFL, when I didn't understand switches (most of my RPG maker life) I copied the map when something changed and changed the events accordingly. It was irritating  :P

look on the back of your computer youll see a switch with 1/0 on it. what happens if its on 0. Thats how a switch in rpgmaker works.

Perhaps easier, think of a switch as a light switch, and a variable as a dimmer switch. Switches have two positions and you can set things accordingly, while variables have many positions for if your object needs them.
