Title: Would anyone be interested in making a video game review site with me? [gamevice
Post by: Sigma on September 25, 2007, 03:02:16 AM
The only problem is that I'd need a crew of reviewers and finally a web designer.  :tpg:

I'd be interested in looking at it, if it's not a free site.

if you can wait after I get my current projects done. (church, rmr, iockman's moms site) I would like to do the web design since it can give me some practice.

I got burned when I paid for a site, so I'm not doing anything like that. Someone would have to front the cost.

SO GUYS.

I own the domain name 2DRPG.com, and currently it's just an alternate mirror of the crankeye.com downloads. I've been wanting to do something better with it for ages (come on, it's an awesome domain name), and something like this is actually what I had in mind.

I host 2drpg on this server (this server meaning my server that rmrk runs on), so no hosting issues ;o

I'll do reviews if Roph lets you use his server. :3

I was thinking having reviews not only under platform, but also by reviewer as well as posting date.

I have/had a reviewing topic, and inside is how I'd want a review to be set up. We could have forums with it, but I wouldn't want reviews from the staff reviewers to be posted on the forum itself.

You can give the users who will be able to post reviews the access to do so, also by using the comment feature its like all your reviews can pretty much be blogs in separate categories. Seems the best way to go IMO.

so when they add a review, they log in, select the category (n64 or w/e) and post, then on a page you can use a template tag and call the categories and they will be displayed. also on the homepage you can show teh most recent review from each section.

That would be fine. This forum obviously has ties with RM, so that would be a good fit since Roph is interested.

We're reviewing RPG Maker games? I wanted to review REAL games. There aren't many RPG Maker games...so why manke a review site just for that? Why not have RPG Maker Reviews, NES Reviews, SNES Reviews, N64 Reviews, Gamecube Reviews, Wii reviews, Playstation Reviews, Playstation 2 Reviews, Playstation 3 Reviews, Xbox Reviews, Xbox 360 Reviews, and PC game reviews? I would be more than happy to review NES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, and computer games.

It is terribly hard to get any traffic on a review site when huge sites like IGN and Gamespot are able to do it 1000 times better. I can help here and there though, if you want. I can do anything Nintendo, I guess.

Ok, so.

You would probably need 2 people for each console, just incase one goes down, the other can pick up, or both go strong.

PS3 (Probably going to be a little harder to fill)
-
-
Wii (SirJackRex would be awesome for this, and alot of people here have a Wii)
- SirJackRex
- (Ask around, for the second one)
360 (LOL EASY SHIZ)
- EVAProject01 (LOL TOTALLY)
- I dunno, Irock, Biohazard, Arrow?
Retro Nintendo Games
- Biohazard (LOL TOTALLY)
- (LOL NO IDEA FOR THIS ONE)
Retro Sony Games
- Biohazard (Dunno really)
- (I could only think of one. Muffin King maybe?)
PC & Or Ect. Retro Games
- Arkbennett (LOL TOTALLY)
-

Suggestions only, don't get pissed if your

A. Not on the list,
B. Not enough slots.

someone did bring up the point of the big name gaming review sites, so I was thinking why don't we just make it a review site for EVERYTHING KNOWN TO MAN.

Music
games
tv
movies
porn (lol jk)
software
electronics

someone can buy the domain:

reviewall.net
or if you want I can buy it ;o
or of course we can name it a hand full of things.

JUST AN IDEA TO ATTRACT MORE PEOPLE!
if it were a TOTAL review site it would be pretty neat.

I'm just thinking games for the time being. I don't want to stretch too far away from gaming or spread ourselves too thin.

There's a lot of smaller review sites that are doing well simply by word-of-mouth.

There needn't be a limit, and more than one person can review the same game. Differing opinions or alike opinions are always good.

Regardless, here's what I've reviewed so far:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/59827.html?type=4

I'm into everything except the PS3 atm.

LOL, I didn't want the fucking list to be all like "OMG WHY AM I NOT ON THERE?!?! WTF??!?! EVERYONE LOVES ME?!?!" It was a suggestion. But if there are too many members on a staff it will just seem like ANYONE can post on there. Suggestions people, i'm not saying that is how it should be, you have to start somewhere.

Jeeze, go take a journalism class.

I think I'm going to have to see two samples of everyone's work to decide who will actually be on staff.

better idea to pick a few staff members who REVIEW content, allow anyone to submit content but the staff checks it before letting it go through.

I got a box of retro PS1 games.

I've got everything from Musashi, Parasite Eve, Silent Hill, Spyro 1&2, Worms: Armageddon, Suikoden 1, Suikoden 2, Star Ocean: 2. Stuff you can only get for 70-100$ on Ebay.

And I have about 50-60+ games for Playstation 2.
Games like Gladius, Devil May Cry Series, KH Series, Star Ocean 3, Katamari, Silent Hill 2, 3, 4,  Radiata Stories, and the list is endless.

I'm a game collector.  ;D

I'd like to have it where reviews are split up by not only platform but also reviewer, score, and date.
Would this be possible, guys?
Game Review for:
Mario Strikers Charged
Year: August 2007?
Platform: Nintendo Wii
Maker: Intelligent Systems
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Hardcore Soccer (Seriously, it is it's own genre)
Players: Four
Wifi: Hell yes, and it's amazing.

Well...when I first got to play this amazing game over summer vacation when I rented it, it was

with my cousins, and we had a blast, it's amazing.
-
If I wanted to make the review longer...I wouldn't have many more things to work with other than

"It's Amazing", the controls are well put, and simple.
The graphics are a little choppy compared to the likes of...say, SSBB? Well, that aside, the

graphics are still pretty good.
Getting back to the controls, a simple control scheme always works better than a complex one, and

this is a good example of one, it uses a few buttons on the controller, which is always welcome

in a sports game.
The gameplay is simple enough...when the game starts, it's just like a normal soccer game, the

team captains go for the ball, which is in the center of the field, and, once you have, you can

pass, pass, pass, pass and shoot (Or try...) and HOPEFULLY get a goal...but, this game isn't as

nice, no, no, it's very hard to get a goal in this game, which is sorta nice, because, there are

two other cool options: (This is where the game gets very interesting!! =D)
Super Striker:
An insanely cheap move, but, thank God, it's a little hard to pull off without one of the

unlockable cheats.
OR
Dive Shot:
This is purely time, if you have perfect timing (or nearly), you can successfully dive behind the

goaly, and score a goal!

Getting back to the Super Strikes, you get, if you have enough space, get six shots at the goal,

and, if you timed it correctly, all will go through.
Wifi is a huge part of what makes this game so amazing, it's a little laggy at times, but,

playing with someone across the country, I only lagged a tiny bit.
You have two choices, play with a friend (if you have any), or play with someone random.
Inside each of those, you can also play with a guest (which, literally means have another person

on your side, and on his/her side in P2).
The matches seem unfair at times, I've been put up against people way out of my league.
Aside from Wifi, there are also loads of extras, there's the tournament, which, you have to

compete for different cups, each one with it's own difficulty, and two special awards for

winning:
If you have scored the most goals out of every competing team, you get the Golden Foot award.
If you have the least amount of goals scored on you, then you can get the Brick Wall award.
Those aren't really special...but, they're still cool to have and show off.

There's the challenges, which put you in the spot to do some little thing, like...beat Daisy by

seven goals...which, is pretty hard, after you beat one, you unlock a "Cheat", which, in return,

really help.
Plus, there's the tutorials, and normal game, which is just normal...

There are a ton of characters and side kicks, which really help, because you'll have tons of

possible combos to try and work with.

The Verdict:

Overall, the game is amazing, it's like Super Mario Strikers 2.5, Wifi, tons of new characters

and stages, unlike it's very limited older brother.
However, this game's AI is very unfair, but soon, you'll catch on and be just as good, very fast

paced gameplay, too!

Wifi Value: 9/10 Amazing
Graphics: 7/10 Decent
Sound: 9/10 Amazing
Controls: 10 Superb
Gameplay: 10 Superb
Originality: 8/10 Great
Presentation: 8/10 Great
Replay Value: 8/10 Great
Overall: A great game worth you time!
=)

No, this is what I had in mind, and I went with it. The reviews sent to me aren't very good, so I'll have to do the brunt of the work at the beginning while I give them some review writing tips.

The name can be taken multiple ways. It's not Crankeye or whatever the hell that means at least, so if you don't like the name too bad. I got used to Crankeye, so you'll have to get used to GameVice.

Now we wait patiently for a site.
I have no design experience, but I was thinking we'd have GameVice in some kind of futuristic font with the V looking like the scissor on top of Cut man's head, but in a green hue.
The site would either be light black. Sort of like the sides of this forum.

=)

Your spacing is very weird. Can't you simply put into paragraph form? It'd be easier for me to read.

Not being a dick. You just need to have better writing skills in your reviews.
I'd rather have a site that isn't paid for filled with good writers than a site that is paid for filled with shitty writers.

I was just saying, you asked a question and don't seemed to be interesting in anyone in their site because you don't trust they can write. If they don't write well enough on the site, get rid of them. If you make your opinion off of ONE thing than you will never get enough people.

If we're using that, all superphillip needs to do is set the domain to use "ns1.slyph.org" and "ns2.slyph.org" as the nameservers, and I'll handle everything else. It'd be like working on a normal webhost and stuff since I have a cPanel license and that's what you'd be using and everything ;o
Tomb Raider: Legend

Platform: PS2/PC/PSP/X360/XBOX/GC
Genre: Action/Adventure
Developer: Crystal Dynamics
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: T

The first time Tomb Raider was released to the public it was a stunning installation for most gamers, but its glory started fading when the Tomb Raider II was released. It lacked the charm that the original one had in store, but with the release of Tomb Raider: Legend this glory is slowly but surely coming back to life. With a completely new approach to the series this game is a true masterpiece.

Story

Tomb Raider: Legend wins at where all the other Tomb Raider games to date has failed: storyline. Never before have you been so captivated of a story like this that actually adds depth to Lara. Before she was, quite frankly, just an hourglass with sexy hair and big guns. In this game her unsecure, but rash personality really takes a shine. After playing the game all you can do is wait for Tomb Raider: Legend 2 to come out :(

9/10

Graphics

People tend to complain about Lara's jaggy boobs in the original Tomb Raider. That is completely unrelevan to the matter at hand but the effects of Tomb Raider: Legend are very impressive. Although the requirements are rather high, it is very much worth it. Lighting effects, water effects, fog and clever level design adds up to a fairly neat experience. For console players this is even better.

However, there are other visual effects that are rather annoying. The HUD of the game is very simple, along with the menus. It could be fancier, but there's not very much you can complain about. All-in-all the graphics are rather neat.

8/10

Sound

Probably the best part in Tomb Raider: Legend is the various songs that will make your mind soundgasm all over the place. The main theme will bug you forever, and the songs are very well adapted to the different levels you play. Then again, sound is not only about music. The sound effects are also very nice (Then again, all games have good sound effects nowadays) and add up for a neat experience for both eyes and ears. The voice actors are superb and the best you could imagine for this game. Lara has the posh voice you'd expect and the people in Peru doesn't speak Russian.

10/10

Gameplay/Replay Value

If you ever played a Tomb Raider game on PC before, you will love this game. The creators finally gave you WSAD movement and a rotateable camers, as opposed to the other games. Jumping and climbing isn't as stiff as it was before, now you are like a feather in a bowl of noodles. You can practically fly around, dive like a dolphin and fall like a leaf from a ten foot building. In terms of movement, gameplay is excellent.

HOWEVER, there are slight drawbacks. The game is incredibly short for a Tomb Raider game, and it lacks difficulty at times. You can only carry one additional weapon at a time and you pretty much never run out of bullets. Unless you play on Hard difficulty you may get disappointed by this game. Alot.

What makes it slightly better is the fact that you get to collect relics and unlock secret outfits, upgrades, biographies and more. The game even contains a time trial mode where you are supposed to speed through the levels at the speed of lightning. If you are a beginner this will frustrate you incredibly, though.

7/10

Conclusion

Tomb Raider: Legend is an excellent game, but I wouldn't recommend this game for someone who has never heard of Tomb Raider before though since the gameplay has some major drawbacks. Since the game is rather short, I'd recommend you rent it rather than buy it. It may be more worth your money in that way.

But this doesn't mean you should turn it down, by all means no.

Overall: 8.5/10

That's nice. I wouldn't section it though. I'd just make it paragraph form without the section headings, y'know? Then you could put all the scores for sound and graphics at the end with your overall score. Good work.  :D

The problem with that which most would disagree is because it shows the writer can't shy away from sectioned writing or doesn't know how to write in paragraph form.

It is fine though.

My Review on an abandonware game caled Beneath a Steel Sky.
I'm familiar with making game reviews.
STORY
Beneath A Steel Sky is a futuristic graphic adventure game. It was made by Revolution Software, and was released as freeware in August 2003.

(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi185.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx99%2FGesselschaft35%2FReview-06.png&hash=ad8771ef42f0fac50c6891a0ac93258dc5f91f8e)You are Robert Foster, and you live in a place called The Gap. You were raised by a peaceful tribe, and you even have a robot pal called Joey, who is very loyal to you. You are very shocked when some guards from Union City arrive. They kill your tribe, kidnap you, and take you back to The City.

Arriving at the City, you manage to escape your captors. You have no idea why you were brought here, but you are determined to return home to The Gap. You are told that if you want to leave The City, then you must find a way down to Ground Level.

As you explore the area, you gradually learn about LINC - the computer that controls everything and everyone in the city. A person's status is determined by how loyal they are to LINC. D-LINCS are people that have been caught rebelling against LINC. They are treated very badly, and they are not allowed any human rights or opinions. They are restricted to the worst areas of the city. You start out just wanting to go home, but you gradually realise that you must stop LINC once and for all. You must put an end to this corruption, and make The City a better place for everyone.

GAMEPLAY
The game is downloaded as an .EXE file. Just double-click on this file to install the game to your computer.

The game is mouse-controlled, and very easy to use. Just left-click on an object to use it, or right-click to get a description of it. Just click on an area of the screen to make Robert move there. If you want to talk to a character, simply click on that character to see a list of dialogue options, and then choose what to say.

Move your cursor up to the top of the screen to see your inventory items. You can scroll left or right, as necessary. Each inventory item is shown as a small picture, so you can easily see what items you are carrying.

Pressing 'F5' brings up a menu which allows you to save and restore game, quit the game, or adjust the music volume etc.

GRAPHICS
The graphics are beautifully done, and are very impressive. At the start of the game, you really get a feeling that you are VERY high up. The characters are well animated, and the backgrounds are lovely to look at. Everything from the gritty factory areas to the luxurious gardens on the ground floor is very rich and detailed.

I especially liked the camera in the furnace room. It looks like an eye watching you. The LINC interface seemed very intimidating. I also found the pulsing veins in the subway quite scary, like they were really alive.

MUSIC AND SOUND EFFECTS
There are some nice sound effects in this game. Things like doors opening, the alarm as you step onto the transport elevator, the dog barking all add atmosphere to the game. The music is also very effective, as each area has its own music. For example, music for the factory area is quite sharp and loud. It makes you feel quite tense. Music for the ground floor is a lot more soothing, as this area is only for the privileged few. You get a nice variety as you explore different areas of the game.

CHARACTERS
There are many interesting characters in this game. Joey is your robot chum, and he has some hilarious comments. Doctor Burke is a very funny character. Gilbert Lamb is heartless, and he is an excellent 'baddie'. I especially liked Anita. She was a D-LINC with a heart of gold. There are many others that you will enjoy talking to.

SUMMARY
This is an excellent adventure game that I highly recommend. The story is very well written. The game is mouse-controlled, which makes it easy to play. The graphics are very rich and detailed. The music is effective, with each area have its own piece of music. There are many interesting characters. This game will captivate you from start to finish.

Is that supposed to be a review?

Heres my review on Killer 7:

Everything: 0/10

This game is shit and deserves to get nailed to the cross.

That game sucked so hard at first, but one you had a little more control and understanding of what was going on, it got real good.

LoL no, If i wanted to give a proper review i'd go into a long detailed explaination as to why it sucks.

Like the controls, walking on a track is not innovative they shouldn't have even tryed it. That belongs in arcade shooters. And the fact that nintendo power sucked its dick so much it should have fallen off. Like i remember being 12 and looking through nintendo power reading, "This game will rewrite the games of the future. It will set the standards for games. People will refer back to this game as a classic." Yeah it was a classic alright, its the first game i actually loathed soo much it hurt.

Doing it all at once with the scores at the end makes more sense in my opinion, it makes it easy to find all the scores - you just have to read the end. Otherwise you'd have to search for them inamongst the article.

Someone should make an official review template for the site.
At least that's what I think!

totally will do that. A page will explain what html codes to use as well, and all posts (except for the one's submitted by a special ranked group) will need to be checked by a mod before posted.

it will be way more strict then that.

I am going to format it so the person will know where to find everything in a second.

Some stuff:
- Score box, special place for the score of the game
- breakdown list (parts of the game reviewed. sound, graphics)
- screen shots. The screen shots will not be like that, all scattered and random sizes. Each screen shot will be shown on the review page in a special minimized size like a photo gallery and then a click will enlarge it. This ensures the page will look nice also.
- Single game image. A pic of the game to the side, probably of the game case.
and some more stuff :D

Anyone is accepted, but featured reviewers will be carefully chosen by me and someone else. Is that fair?  ;8

Perfectly fair.

But wouldn't it be better if instead of featured reviewers, you just have featured reviews...?

no matter what featured reviewers are needed. not just for the fact to submit reviews, but to correct reviews before submission.

See all reviews when posted will be sent to waiting and there a featured reviewer will make sure it is:

- Correctly formated
- Has good content

before allowing it to be shown.
This is why we can allow anyone to submit anything because if it's bad, we send it right back :D

I'd like to help if only school gives me more time, but hey I can write it on paper then type it! xD
However, I'm specialized in reviewing RPGs (PS2, PS, GBA) only... And NDS games. Well I play some PC games too... But PS2 took most of my times.

Can I help? =D

Consoles you mean?  ;)

I would love to review DreamCast games, especially, being like my favorite system, and I've played over 100 DC games. (I think, some giant number like that)

Does the consoles include retro consoles?

I played a lot of abandonware and small-sized pc games, so I can do them.
And PS2 games, I can do them too.

Yes, sorry for the spelling mistake.

I'm thinking, the major ones get listed, then there will be one section called Other, and will have a drop down list of the other systems that aren't the major ones as of now.

By major ones, I mean pretty much the ones listed on the top navigation of EBgames (http://www.ebgames.com)
