Title: [Visual] Me sux at vector art >.<
Post by: MrMoo on August 29, 2007, 03:41:05 PM
So my first attempt at a face set for this RMXP sprite. I don't think it's that bad for my first try, but it still isn't good enough to use. The edges are a bit sharp, the eyes aren't really good, and the ears were made in 5 seconds. Any tips? Tutorials? Shading? Links?

Well here it is:

BTW: I used Adobe Illustrator CS2 for these. I also have photoshop so if anyone have tips for either programs is fine.

1. Make edges rounded.
2. Do not use gradients.
3. make sure it fits in a square
4. Shade things
5. Just work on your artistic talent, really.  Its not so much the techniques you use, but its just not very natural looking
6. Work on the eyes more, steer clear of anime.

No, don't steer clear of anime. Work on the eyes more, but make them look MORE anime. The sprite looks anime to me, so it would make sense for the pic to look that way too.

What it needs :
-Shading
-The bottom part of the faceset needs to be straight.
-More rounded, less edges.
-Do what bio tells you.

I know it needs shading, I just need a quick guide to shading or something. And I was trying for an anime look so that's why I did the eyes like that. It's just the eyeball coloring is a bit odd looking cuz I suck.

usually anime eyes (or any eyes really) aren't defined all the way around. Usually it's just the top and bottom, and about half the time they have eyelashes that help define the sides. Dont use the straight line tool.

Just don't draw anime eyes, have some originality.

sprite has anime eyes + picture is of sprite = picture should have anime eyes

My logic is undeniable.

I suppose, but it really isn't the same sort of anime eye as on the sprite anyways.
Also, the sprite could be stylized, in that the eyes are disproportional in order to make the eyes visible from the distance the player will be viewing them at.

If you guys are wondering, it has to be anime because my current project (Tales of Identity) is well, you guessed it, a Tales Of game. Which means it wouldn't be much of a fan game if it didn't have anime in it >.<
So yeah, I was just playing in Illustrator, trying to make skit faces. I suck at people in general so anime or not it would look horrible. I specialize in logos and basically anything else along those lines.

Just because its a fan game doesn't mean it has to be a generic all the same style game.  Do something to set it apart, or it will undeniably fall into the legions of shitty fan based games.

so true.

"Fan game" could be used almost as lightly as the word "butter", in that, although something may be as far off as canola (see rapeseed) oil and some other shit, because it still acts as a "buttery" spread, people colloquially call it "butter".
The (almost) same for fan-games. As long as it's a bit similar, you can call it a fan game. Of course, you may not WANT to call it a fan game, because those are usually- as Bio said- shitty, but if you must, then please differentiate. That is all.

Don't listen to them! If you're going to make a "Tales" game, then make it look like one! Fans of the Tales series love the anime style!
