Title: Design Feedback
Post by: modern algebra on July 07, 2007, 04:07:58 AM
Hey there guys.

As some of you might know, I am writing an inventory script similar to Betrayal at Krondor (limited inventory. It has lots of features, like the ability to equip inside that screen, support for pictures, if you choose to use pictures to represent items instead of icons, custom sizes for each item, as well as a loot system and other cool stuff you will see when I release it). Anyway, I was wondering what you guys thought of this design. I think it's good myself, but feedback is always good:

What do you guys think of the layout?

Thats cool :P

But, it looks a little too similar to the Diablo style inventory :-\

It's nice, but as Rune mentioned, kinda leaning toward  Diablo. But still, I like it nonetheless.

Yeah, but it's going to have spacing. That'll be awesome. Also, LOL at the fact that the shield is so huge. But I don't think armor should just be a straight 4 lines down. I think maybe 2x2 or 2x3. :P Just my opinion.

Hold on a minute, does this script use customizable weapon, armor and item sizes?
If so, finish it! I've been wanting this for ages ;D

Unless its only for your game ::)

I will release it, yes. And yeah, it has customizable item, weapon, armor sizes, as well as an option to use pictures for the items, and also the ability to stack items of your choosing (like arrows or potions, you could have more than one of them in each slot). And yeah, none of the items there are the correct size. I was just testing the space optimization method.

EDIT: I shouldn't be making it look bad. It is a great script, just didn't suit my purposes is enough to say. I'll just list my own features which are different:

And maybe some other stuff I've forgotten about.

Looks very nice :D But i still think you should rearrange the windows or something to make it look less like diablo, thats just my opinion though.

Also, maybe, add a gold count somewhere like below the armor/accessories?

Okay, I did a little rearranging and I have this now:

I think it looks pretty good. I think that's what I'm going to go with. Anything else looks silly. It's based off of Betrayal at Krondor, which looks like this:

(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mobygames.com%2Fimages%2Fshots%2Fthumbnail%2F982867511-00.jpg&hash=8544a7f4cb206313a84260b720d18c640d52bd35)

If anyone has any suggestions to improve it, don't hesitate to mention.

So, the BK inventory looks like a white box saying

Interesting...

Doesn't for me :-\

What about this one:

(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcontent.answers.com%2Fmain%2Fcontent%2Fwp%2Fen%2Fthumb%2Fd%2Fd9%2F180px-Betrayal_at_Krondor_-_inventory.jpg&hash=e4a2efc2b5d1f5e596ee963d7b6192d8048d1cf5)

It doesn't really matter too much. I used it only as a guideline. It was mouse-based, so to adapt it to RMXP some design changes were badly needed.

Ohhh, cool :P

One problem...

SOME design changes?! :P

They look nothing like each other :P

Sure they do. ;8 Equipment's on the left, grid's on the right, gold's on the bottom  :P

The primary thing is that all the interactions are the same.

A new screen: This one is for the item info screen. Basically, it gives a lot of info about whatever weapon or armor you select to view

Enough of that though. What I want to know is if the lines look good. If not, what do you guys suggest to improve the screen? Any feedback is appreciated. Also, anything you can think to add?:

Okay guys, which one of the backgrounds to the pictures looks best. I don't like #3 at all, but I can't decide between #1 and #2

#1
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg228.imageshack.us%2Fimg228%2F2286%2Finventoryscrrentestrr7.png&hash=f205fc9a8276bf37b52e9a68fa221e2508896fee)
#2

I like the second one best ;D
A couple of questions:
What will the in-battle item window look like?
Does each character have their own inventory space or it it all just one space for all items, weapons and armors?

I like 1 and 3 it shows the separation between the objects better.

The in battle window will look the same, but I will probably make it impossible to equip items or move items, or I might make either of those actions use up a full turn just as using an item will.

Each character has their own inventory which they take with them when they leave.

Also, here are some new versions. People say they like the mix of colours and lines on another forum, so I made up these
#4
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg236.imageshack.us%2Fimg236%2F5058%2Finventorypicmd4.png&hash=b184e74afdf70e95765fee4672bfc2bbae8299b1)
#5 (Zeriab's idea)

I think I will probably go with #5 and make it easy to change background colours.

you are realy good at scripting, my brother wanted something like this he all ways failed at it, and you just pissed him off.

It looks realy cool Nice job!

What's the difference between #4 and #5 above?  I'm either blind or I'm not looking in the right place...
Title: Re: Design Feedback
Post by: modern algebra on July 19, 2007, 03:58:45 AM
In 4 the lines are black, and in 5 the lines are a darker shade of the item's background colour.

ah, tricky...  Now that I know what I'm looking for, I think 5 is good.

I am with 5 as well.
Ït looks quite nice

I don't think it will really matter, but I say 5 looks nicer. That's only if you know what to look for.
