Title: Eager N00b...Scripting Questions.
Post by: jessman1988 on February 28, 2006, 09:31:48 AM
Hey everyone.  I've been really into RPG Maker for a few years now, but are just now getting into the "scene".  I've been using RPG Maker 2003 until recently when I found out that XP existed.  Anyways, I installed the newest version on my PC and it seems to have a worse battling system and a more limited interface, while it DOES look incredibly nice.  Anyways, I was wondering how to use scripting because I've read that you can use it to change the battle system.  I would really like an FF6 style system and I don't know where to get the script or even how to go about using it.  Please help me.  Oh, and how do I access "World Map" tiles, because I've been looking yet I can't seem to find any.  Thanks a bunch!

1. Search here for a side-view battle system script. There are two here that I know of. Just follow the instructions and you'll be fine.

2. XP doesn't come up with a world map, you'll have to either find your own somewhere, or do without.

Thanks for the quick reply, but the search feature on this site is confusing me, and nothing seems to explain quite how to use scripts either.  I found an "Active Battle" script but don't know how to insert it or what to do afterwards.  Please help me, and I'd already searched around.

Sigh...I realise that anyone reading this probably just considers me "one of those damn n00bs that doesn't search", but I am grinding my teeth so hard that they're gonna break apart because WHAT GOOD IS A BATTLE SCRIPT WHEN IT DOESN'T WORK AFTER INSERTING IT?  Whew.  God, I am so frustrated with this whole "scripting" thing because no thread tells you what to do after inserting the script!

I went to this thread http://www.crankeye.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2966&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 and followed the directions exactly, but after all that, using "test battle" and or going in-game is exactly the same!  PLEASE someone!  I'm about to break my PC over this!  I am serious when I say that I'M BEGGING FOR HELP!!!!

No... I believe everyone is just trying to figure out what the heck you just said.

It's hard to make a battle system, and even harder to make a good, clean one, that's easy to implement, and easy to change, etc.

I would try but I've got to hone my l337 ninja script0rz skillz before I try that.

Not to mention my time on the computer is now limited... I've got to work for it, while that's fair and all, it still irks me a little.

Well, I'm sorry for blowing my top, but I just don't understand how to use a script after inserting it.  I thank you for replying, but can you please tell me what I need to do after inserting a script so that I can use it.  Basically, I'm having no real problems finding a script, but what do I do after pasting them in?  Do I just go into a battle?  Or is there a way to call on a script?  Please, I want to learn so that I may contribute in the future.  Just because I'm a n00b today doesn't mean that I'll always be one...

Once you insert the script it should work just fine when you go to test play...of course, I'm new with the whole scripting thing, so I shouldn't be saying much.  :P
Either way, I'm going to try the script out for myself, just to see what its like.

Thanks.  I just can't figure out how to use one though...I mean, the battle system seems exactly the same!  Aren't there any scripts out there that work after just inserting them?  Because it sounds like other things have to be done also...

If the script doesn't run when you insert it, it's either you inserted it wrong and it's not reading, or you need to call the script through an event.

Ok try this jessman, go into the script editor, right click on main and click on insert. Now in the name box type anything, then in that blank space paste this script in there.

I've tried all of this already.  Is this script one that needs to be called through an event or something?  Honestly, I'd be fine using any script as long as the characters are animated.  I know that there's some good scripts out there, but I just can't find one.  If any of you know of a script similar to that of snes RPGs, please link me to one.  I really thought that the 2003 battle system was perfect, but I can't find an XP system like it at all.  Just please, tell me how to access these.  I posted it above "Main" and did everything the way that it was described.  I'm just a clueless n00b, but I'd like to change that.  Thanks.
