Title: Feedback plz on my first spriteset
Post by: Halestorm5 on May 12, 2007, 01:07:44 PM
Half-Kaizers are tough, so I changed to using RTP. But, I need feedback.
My latest works -

Most recent battler update.

It doesn't look to bad but the hair looks like a bad hairpiece.  :P

Keep it up and have a look at other peoples works for technique and inspiration, I did some terrible ones when I started (remembers his sad attempt at a ninja) but they come along quite well now.

Like all the others already had said, it's a good first attempt. But like the others, Im not a big fan of the hair. Looks like an helmet.

please dont take our comments the bad way but for the first attempt it sure shows you have much potential =)

i think you should darker the middle part of the hair and give it a few light on the side

Soooo, you're saying I saying I shouldn't use the darkest shade for the outline?
Title: Re: Feedback plz on my first spriteset

The problem is that the hair has no texture. It looks like an entire bottle of gel was used on it.

1)Start by making the outline of the hair in the darkest shade of the colour you're using.
2)Fill in the entire block of hair with the next shade up.
3)Make a 'zig-zag' with the next shade up, and fill in the rest of the hair, leaving the top 'zig-zag'.
4)With the next shade up, create another 'zig-zag' again, don't forget to leave the lest on your created.
5)With the next shade up, fill in the bottom parts of the hair, but don't make it a straight line, it doesn't look natural.

If you want to know the hair style, read the spoiler.
His hair covers most of his head. His hair reaches to the back of his head from the mid forehead.
Also, if nobody/not many people like/likes the hair I will remake the hair. But thats after I finish the back. :)

I guess this is a small request, but...

Can someone make me some shadeless hair on the default RTP spriteset. But the shape, needs to be similar to my current spritesets hair. (No clothes are needed, just the hair)... ;9

BOMP! The battler has hair!
Title: Re: Feedback plz on my first spriteset
Post by: SirJackRex on May 21, 2007, 10:00:40 PM
You shouldn't use the same color scheme on the battlers hair..you should try a different more real looking color for hair to match his body... Nice job though!

Nice hair, but it's still shiny...
Title: Re: Feedback plz on my first spriteset
Post by: Halestorm5 on May 28, 2007, 09:59:21 PM
Shiny? The battler or the spriteset? If its the battler, is it the clothes or hair. If its the spriteset is it the clothes or hair?

And Ive finally re-started on working on this again... I only make this in spare time too.

It's slowly getting there... I don't think it's in keeping with the standard RTP sprites... But I think with a little bit of time you could make it much better.

I think you sticking to the Primary colours has made it look very childish and overly cartoony... For example if I was making it (Now with my experince) I would make it look much darker, and drab... Those vibrant colours just look wrong for the era of the game sets... Way to modern... Looks like some thing out of a Nike Advert... The Black key line around the hair on the walking Up state is a litle in your face, makes him look like he has a Lump in the back of his head...

But your shading is good, it's all about right, the swapping of the knee pad is correct and in keeping, the animation is nice... For your first sprite it's good.

Here's my first ever scratch build:-

(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi13.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa260%2FStevenGiles%2FBlindCH.png&hash=f92ac8b88233c2545c4e25a5249dc4876e781a52) (https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi13.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa260%2FStevenGiles%2FBlindBAT.png&hash=6ff0030c143d26e2670e8ea13921276615cf43e5)

It's funny I made pretty much all the same mistakes when I started out, looking back at my first one for me is slightly embarrasing now... I think now I am creating some brilliant resources... like me you should Keep at it, I think you have potential, you taking constructive critisum well... Gilgamesh Gave me some brilliant pointers when I first started out !!!

Well it did use MS Paint...

And what black keyline?
Title: Re: Feedback plz on my first spriteset
Post by: landofshadows on June 01, 2007, 04:39:21 PM
To the left of the back of his head (Slighty to the left of centre) his hair looks clumpy... Like a head malformity... Or may be it's just me...?

I have made your image larger and highlighted the far left where in my OPINION it looks odd... and on the Far Right done a very QUICK impression of what i think looks more natrual.

(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi178.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw267%2Flegendofthefallen%2Ferror.png&hash=91317d12c73738ddb8f331ae80e718247bb26423)

Hope that helps... I do like the clothing and shading, it's a good start !!!

At the moment the hair looks like a blob of melted plastic... But saying that many pokemon sprites look that way, so if your making a pokemon type game your sprite is spot on !!!
