Title: how to make charcter sets look better then the reg 8 bit but still be 8 bit

trying to make a descent looking characters but i cant import them. if i cant make good looking charcters in rpgm2003, what other game making programs are out there that i can use?

xp..2k..Game maker. also there are programs that you can use to make a char easily.

what programs and how?

what i am doing is going on photoshop nad taking a face from a picture and saving it as a png an making the picture 42X42 and it still wont let me import it into the the resources
