Title: Great game companies that don't exist anymore.
Post by: Holkeye on March 15, 2007, 11:06:06 PM
I think Black Isle is probably the one company that I will miss more than any other. The games that used the infinity engine (Baldur's Gate, Planescape:Torment, Icewind Dale) were the best crpgs that I've ever played. The atmosphere of the worlds was captivating, and the storylines were vast and sprawling. Also, I think that Troika's "Arcanum" is one of the best, and that company will be missed by me as well. Anyone else have any defunct game companies that they would like to reminisce on?

Westwood proper.

EA bought thier asses, and besides C+C3 most of the games (Generals, for example) havent been as good as the games Westwood used to make.

I suppose they're still around a bit though.

Meh.

Square+Enix? I hear around here sometimes that they made better games individually than together.

Oh god. Oddworld Inhabitants ;_;

They TECHNICALLY didn't close or shut down, but they dropped being a game company. Now they focus on film stuff. Wether or not that means an oddworld film, I dunno ;9

Square... Enix... what a shame... it was a grand idea, but falls very very short in my opinion.  Those two were competition for YEARS... and it was good for them, kept them honest.

I think posted earlier that I've just finished Final Fantasy 12... and recently, Dirge of Cerberus.  Both games left me feeling dissapointed.  Like they were cheap copies of other Final Fantasy titles.

Split up, guys, and give us those great games you used to be capable of!

I honestly didn't think the merger of Square and Enix was a bad thing, because I think both of those companies had their prime on the SNES. The Soulblazer saga (Soulblazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma) Is one of my favorite series, and I know that most likely we'll never see another chapter. Also, Westwood was good, but I think C+C: Renegade was actually a great idea, and a fun game, too.

Well, I like FFXII way more than FFX. I haven't played X-2, but from what i have heard, it's a bad copy from X-2. =/

I know it's just a video game publisher, but Working Designs. The voice acting in Lunar and Lunar 2 were seriously the best I have ever heard. At the end of the games, they even put the NGs in there, which were completely hilarious.

I didn't know Working Designs was gone, but I remember them. They were similar to Atlus, porting some great games over to the US.

Well, Renegade WAS fun...I admit... but after that it just seemed like EA decided to cash in on a franchise name with Generals...*shrug*

I really miss Origin Systems and Westwood... bah, EA is buying everthing and turning them into crap makers.
Also, i miss Sierra - since Vivendi Universal swallowed them, the worst offense was with the Leysure Suit Larry series... it didn't have the original creator involved on that last 3D game(people in the production only found out about it later, and got really angry with V.U.) thus explaining why it got out so bad. >:(
And about Origin... i still proudly own my copies of ULTIMA 8 and ULTIMA 9: ASCENSION, and i don't expect a rat's ass from ULTIMA X. MMOs.. bah!

Capcom isn't dead. Neither is Atlus, and as far as I know, GameFreak is still active. Thus, you fail at this thread.

SquareEnix wasnt a great idea, but i didnt mind the Dirge of Cerebrus (sp?? <_<) game. I think the end bit is a bit strange...

Still, FF games got worse after the merge.

Made you look!!

You know, I thought the first Turok for N64 sucked really bad, so I didn't play any of the others for a while. Then one day I played Turok 2, and it was actually pretty decent. Never got a chance to play the others though.

It's Eidos. Also, they're still around? Also Eidos is a publisher; they don't make games =o

About Square Enix... some time ago, i read a manga called "even a monkey can draw manga", and one of the explanations where about the fact that - even with the same owner - two big manga companies should keep rivals, or the guys would relax and start making crappy titles.
I think that just happened with Square Enix: they think they're on top of the food chain, nobody else to care, so they don't do the best anymore.  :-\
