Title: Skill issues
Post by: TommyMachineGun on February 20, 2007, 05:26:44 AM
Hi

I get an error which says "Event referenced a skill that does not exist." What do I do to remedy this?

I made the skill.
I made the animation.
It's type is Normal in the skill tab.
I applied it to the class that can use the skill, and then applied it to my hero character.
I am really stumped. Can anyone help me please?

Thanks.

You deleted all the monsters?

IF YOU DIDNT, then just tell me.

I did delete all the monsters. I imported monsters from other games though.

that could be the problem then
they could be trying to call skills/effects that don't exist.

So how do I make the skill exist? I've tried everything that I could think of?

Ahhh, I'm not to sure of the schematics, but check the monsters commands, see what skills they are programed to use and  see whether they exist in your skill list or not. If they don't then that would be the problem, as to "making them exist", it could be hard without the original skills as even if you make skills with the same names, it still may not work.

You best bet would be to delete the skills in the monster's commands and replace them with skills that do exist in your copy of the game.

An interesting development:
Unfortunately I deleted all the skills from the database. But,
I programmed one of my monsters to use the skill that I made and it worked.
But when my guy uses it, I get the error message.
So what do I do now?

BTW I appreciate the help.

Well, either get a new Skills.rxdata or just create new skills and assign them to enemies again. The second choice will take a lot more time.
BTW, the Skills.rxdata file is located in the System/Data folder where you have installed RMXP.

Damn, isn't that interesting... Check to see that all of the old skills are out. Delete and try again. If this doesn't work try reinstalling the program because this sounds like a glitch... Try downloading the program from a different source too.

Ok so I deleted all the original skills that come with the maker from my game database that I am creating.

I tried re-installing the program and I still got the error message.

I tried downloading from a different source and I still get the  same error message.

I did find something interesting about the error messages. A README came with the program and it had this blurb:
"Error-checking in RPG_RT.exe is flaky.  If you give the party
an invalid skill or item, RPG_RT.exe will not show an error until
you open the item list or skill list.  Enterbrain has not officially
acknowledged this bug at this time."

That is what happens. When I try to use the skill in battle I get the error message.

When I downloaded the other RPG Maker. It came with the same read me. Does that mean that I downloaded the same version?

So I don't know what to do. What else can I try?

That error is referring to a deleted item, skill or monster still being used in events.

Did you remake them?? I only meant to delete that dead skills the monsters had.

It could be, but I think the chances are low enough, I think most come with the same read-me...

Over the internet it's very hard to tell a problem, it is most likely a simple thing you've done wrong but without being there I can't pinpoint it...

The problem shouldn't exist if all was said and done. Are you only using imported monsters?? Try giving the skills to a monster that comes with the game. It's possible you haven't set up the skills properly, try copying a skill that comes with the game and only change the parts you have to.

The error seems to be that your applying skills that don't exist, try fooling around with the skills you apply to monsters.
