Title: Arrow-1's Clockwork Series: Mega Man X
Post by: Arrow on July 02, 2007, 01:37:16 AM
Here's to the kickoff of my first game engine, and furthermore, the start of the clockwork series! The idea behind the Clockwork series is to present true-to-the-original game engines. I decided to start with Mega Man X, because I know the series so well and because resources are so readily available. (Favoritism played a part as well. :)) The game will hopefully feature a custom (at the least, remixed or arranged) soundtrack, a full array of sound effects, and edited or custom sprites, as well as original stage designs.

All iterations in the Clockwork series will be made in the latest registered version of the Game Maker software. If the demand is great enough, I will make a conscious effort to supply a version for non-registered users, but I will not make versions for past versions of Game Maker.

With that, here is a link to the GMK file, an executable for non-programmers who want to see what has been done, and a list of what is included here. Please note that a feature highlighted in green is active, in yellow is new, in blue is currently under development, and red is on a waiting list. If I have named any of the enemies or characters incorrectly, please inform me.

Any noticeable errors?

Excellent Arrow!
The only problem I noticed is when you try to jump on the moving boxes from the side they're moving to. If you're right on them you can't jump on top.

That's part of what will help me implement wall-kicking. Without the code it looks fucking bizarre, but when it's in there it'll work much better. :D

wow, i feel less intelligent now.

: |

yay, ima test your engine!

welll...
You seriously need to...

oh. Damage system isn't included...heh. >.<
well, if that's the case, nevermind, except that when you "die" (e.g. fall), it's funny to watch the enemies chase after your location. Also, I'm a newb and died on the first conveyor belt part, but an enemy got stuck on one and held up the whole production line xD

fun glitches.

already did.

biatch.

Well, there's that, and I found it odd that the blaster only made a sound when it hit an enemy or when it was being charged.
And the flying guys are annoying : |

Custom tracks are being composed now. Two are in the works, but may already be finished. Still trying to get a good idea for this stage.

Update: One of the eight bosses. I drew it very quickly today during class.

Also: Prelim sketches of stage backgrounds and ride armor. These all apply to the stage you've played.

This ride armor has no name yet. Its hands have been replaced with wrecking ball mechanisms, attached to the end of super powerful poles. Kind of like a plastic action figure with ROCKET PUNCH ACTION!

TMK: Yes, absolutely. I use one every single time I test. I will make a note to implement customizable controls though, now that you mention it.

UNTIL THEN, however, look up a program called joy to key. (joy2key?)

Alright, so everyone knows, the new version will have a complete pause screen, and the damage system will be fully implemented!

EDIT: It has come to my attention that the original download link has died. If you really want to download it now, use this link. BE WARNED, it is being released a full week before it was intended to be, so it's probably got a number of glitches.

There are 2 glitches...

1. megaman's bullets always go to the right, even when facing left. I didn't do it again... o.O
2. Because you put the death system in, when I try to change the frame rate he dies... because he has no health bar.

It worked pretty good, remember, mega man starts with a small hp bar. Also wen he charges sparkly shit goes around him.

Just a reminder.

I was going to work on both today, and it totally slipped my mind. :0 Thank you for the reminder. I actually have the sparkly shit 's graphics in the file already, I just need to make the objects now. The healthbar will be done with a variable, methinks.

Id have to say this game is immediately awesome. Srsly.

You should add some kind of cheat to put in and play as the old 8-bit Mega Man. That would be awesome. No really, this game is going to be freaking sweet. I can feel it. IN THE FORCE.

And I never had the healthbar thing happen either.

I've never played X so this is probably a stupid question, but by Clockwork do you mean that the entire game is the same, or just the engine. IMO, it'd be cool if the stages and enemies and bosses were original. It's pretty cool both ways, especially considering I've never played X  ;D

Never mind, I'm blind and can't read. This looks awesome!

Been workin' for a few hours now, and I got this much done, completely from scratch. (First sprite usually takes the longest, should be moving along much more quickly now. -___-)

This is Doral, the Close Combat reploid. His special move is "Extreme-G", which take the opponent high into the air and crushes them with an earth-shattering suplex!

Uh, guys, just wanna say something right now:

Progress here is gonna slow down.

And not just by a little bit.

By a lot.

See, there's this program called Stencyl. They're basically doing the same thing I am here. So I talked to them, and it turned out they needed a spriter. Now I'd have to be an idiot to pass up a deal to work with them on THIS kind of a deal.

http://www.stencyl.com/about/

So yeah, I'm part of the team working on the Blue Bomber kit now. I'll try to work here, but most of my efforts are going to be put forth to meeting my deadlines. Anybody who wants the editable file can contact me at any time.

Do you mind putting the controls somewhere? XD

Edit: I figured it out by messing around but it'd be still nice. Also, I don't like that the sounds aren't completely done but that should be saved for last. Game play first. ;) Also, for some reason, it was reaaaalllly slow at maximum framerate.
Title: Re: Arrow-1's Clockwork Series: Mega Man X
Post by: Arrow on August 02, 2007, 03:25:18 PM
It's weird, the framerate varies DRASTICALLY from one computer to another. On mine its fine, on others its WAY to fast, and on others its slow...

All I can suggest is making sure that, when you test, do not have any other programs open. (Like windows media player, firefox, internet explorer, winamp, MSN messenger, etc.)
Title: Re: Arrow-1's Clockwork Series: Mega Man X
Post by: Kokowam on August 02, 2007, 04:11:06 PM
Yea, nothing was on. Also, on the computer I'm using, Chaos's LoZ thing doesn't load.
Title: Re: Arrow-1's Clockwork Series: Mega Man X
Post by: Arrow on August 02, 2007, 07:57:52 PM
That's weird.

Well try this then: Go the frame rate room, and try decreasing the frame rate. its entirely possible that, since mine runs at the max speed, its overloading your comp, and a decrease would give it a break.
Title: Re: Arrow-1's Clockwork Series: Mega Man X
Post by: Arrow on January 06, 2008, 04:54:53 AM
Well, I left Stencyl, so I see no reason for me to prevent myself from continuing to work on this any longer. I don't know when I can update again, but I will probably be starting the topic over when I do, so watch out for that.

Currently working on: A new stage select screen, with (hopefully) 100% custom sprites.

If you wanted an original song for this, and yuo felt like doing an 8 or 16-bit version of it, try the song Impulse by an endless sporatic, i'm pretty sure it would go good with a megaman game.
Title: Re: Arrow-1's Clockwork Series: Mega Man X
Post by: Arrow on January 18, 2008, 03:05:24 AM
If I did that, it wouldn't very much be an original song would it? ;________;

I appreciate that, but I'm writing my own music.

HOWEVER, the beauty of externally loaded files with any game is that they can be altered. You could easily find the MP3 you wanted to replace, save the song you want it to be replaced with under EXACTLY THE SAME FILE NAME AND EXTENSION (or it won't work), and then copy over it. Then the game would use the new file with no foreseeable problems. I do it with every game I can that allows me- notably Lunia GSP.
