Has anyone played this yet? I'm waiting for it from gamefly. Is it as good as Tales of Symphonia or doesn't it not match up?
-
I'm surprised Yossy didn't make this topic.
-
Yossy would have made this topic if she had a PS2. ._.
I don't know anything about Abyss, except that the character design was done by Kousuke Fujishima, who is my homie snorkel muffin.
I really really want to play it, but I won't have the opprotunity to unless it is released on GCN.

thats a possibility if it's popular enough.
yeah he's an awesome character designer ^^
-
Yes, Symphonia was released on Ps2 only after it was realized how much of a success it was on the GCN. I shall remain hopeful~
...
lol I was going to say something about Fujishima's character design, but I'd better not...

so ur just going to make everyone curious as to what u were going to say and then not say it? >< thats cruel

Well, Chester was my favorite character from Phantasia, and everyone here knows Zelos is my favorite from Symphonia. After looking at all of the characters in Abyss, I think the main dude, Luke, looks the coolest...
I was going to say something suggestive about their possibly questionable sexual orientations, due to their somewhat effeminate appearances, but now I've decided against it.
And now, a convenient diversion!!

-
That guy was your ex-avatar right!?
And i thought yossy...no...Yossy would have T E H ps or gameboy or something
-
I would have what?
I'm so confused.
Nightwolf should win an award for confusing me like 20 times in the last five minutes.
Maybe he's just stupid.
-
I got a 88/5 % i am not stupid
how come i confused you...
IM SO COMPLEX TO ALL OF YOU! THATS WHY IM THE BEST!
-
meh, not possible with zelos. he's a PIMP!

88/5% on WHAT? And what the hell is an 88 out of 5!? CONFUSING IS WHAT IT IS!

That's exactly what I'm talking about!!

I really wanna give Tales of Symphonia another try. Maybe this time I'll actually get to, like, an animated cutscene or something 30 hours in.
-
Umm, the first animated cutscene is at the very beginning, as Kratos narrates the stuff about angels, godesses, and the Chosen. The second is about 10 minutes of gameplay later, after speaking with Remiel the first time, and shows the Tower of Salvation rising from the ground.
The first substantial animated cinematic is the awakening of the Great Kharlon Tree, near the end of the first disk.
-
Seriously? I don't remember seeing any anime cutscenes in the beginning. hm
-
That's probably because you're looking for the typical aspects of anime... Fujishima's first few cinematics are mostly scenery... and darn pretty scenery, too.
The PS2 release of ToS had a few added cinematics, including Colette's first use of her wings, a bonus scene somewhere in the middle of the game, and an extended ending.
-
you got to love the title screen cinematic anime thing too. ^^
-
Okay, I'm getting very confused. I can't find ToS for PS2 ANYWHERE online, except for Japanese import versions. eBay fails, Amazon.com fails. What the hell is going on, here?
edit: Ok, that's messed up. All this time I was under the impression that they just ported the english version over to PS2 but LOL NOPE. Great. Guess I'm not gonna play ToS after all.
:re-rail:
-
Have you seen the Japanese version of ToS' intro?
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7487914986321283905&q=symphonia
It's so stupid. Motoi Sakuraba's intense, dramatic score completly owns that out-of-place J-Pop.
edit:
I've just watched the Japanese Tales of the Abyss intro, and HOLY COW it's awesome.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6313645090884699486&q=%22tales+of+the+abyss%22
J-Pop again?! Augh!
I don't care too much... I just like watching Fujishima's amazing animation... the man is an artistic genius...

I thought the game was PS2 / GC. ?_?
-
don't insult j-pop, j-pop is awesome, just doesnt always work with intros xp
-
I thought the game was PS2 / GC. ?_?
Symphonia is, yes. But not Abyss. I'm nt quite sure what you're asking. o_o
I don't have anything against J-Pop, collectively. There are a couple J-Pop songs that are awesome, but the particular uppity tune selected for the ToS intro seems completely unsuitable... The TotA one wasn't as bad. I guess that one would qualify as J-Rock. The male singer is also an improvement. That's just me, though. I can't stand female voices, and that goes for american music, too. Sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard. :P

sexist against yourself?
xp
yeah i agree that one choosen for the ToS into sucked, but the ToA one was awesome, i am mad that they took it out in the american version ><

I saw Tales of Abyss at Best Buy two days ago. It looked kinda neat, but ultimately I didn't buy it. I pretty much assumed it was a typical RPG and therefor a giant waste of my money. I bought DMC3 and Tony Hawk's American Wasteland instead.

Okay, so maybe I just acquired a poorly translated ROM of Tales of Phantasia, but one of the guys in the game just said "Mint has a certain elegance about her, but I bet Arche fucks like a tiger."
Jesus christ, Japan! This is an SNES game! :O
-
That's the DeJap translation you have, there. They have admitted to exaggerating much of their translation, and have revealed that that exact conversation never actually took place. However, I am fairly certain that many of Arche's suggestive comments are true to the original dialogue.
-
Hah. I have that ROM. It's great.
-
I think everyone has the DeJap version. I'm pretty sure it's the only translation available. ;D;
-
Frickin' hilarious that game. I think it is also hilarious how they represented mole.
-
what wrong with that line? it just makes it a little closer to what people would say in true life xp.

This one group's been working on translating the PSX re-release (which looks incredible. Many, MANY GOOD changes to design and stuff like that) but progress is very slow. :( :(
-
There was a what now? I'll have to watch out for that...
-
Yeah, it was released in, like, 98 or 2000 or something. It's taking them THIS LONG to finish translating it. I don't think it's ever gonna get done. =\
-
The Playstation version revamped all of the music, which makes me infinitely happy. ;D
Especially the soopa-awesome rendition of The Second Act (http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/1189/39)!!
-
i just got the game in the mail finally, and let me say, it owns! if ur a tales of fan or not u gotta play this!
omg puppetmaster!
