Title: House Exteriors
Post by: :) on November 25, 2006, 03:32:02 PM
Ok in this tut you will learn how to make some good looking houses. Most houses I see now a days in games, the person has just selected the house, and simply dropped it in the map like this:
First of all, if you haven't noticed on the RTP house, there is a shadow line, it is impossible that half your house will be light and half dark! When I see that in your mapping, I will immediately know how your mapping skills are.

LETS START!

Layers:

Step 1 Using layer one, lay out grass, and then make the house back/side wall:
Spoiler for:

Step 2: Still on layer one copy and drag the tileset of the house onto the map and lay it like this:
Spoiler for:

Step 3: Still on layer one, extend the roof:
Spoiler for:

Step 4: NOW ON LAYER 2, top the roof off, and overlay the back of the house top like so:
Spoiler for:

Step 5: switch back to layer 1 and use the grass tool to erase/cover the while top of the roof that you already overlaid in layer 2 (step 4):
Spoiler for:

Step 6: (sorta hardest step)On layer 2: Connect the roof to the side roof, use the tile's shown in the screenshot and work on layer two until it looks like:
Spoiler for:

Step 7: go back to layer 1 and fix that house shadow!:
Spoiler for:

Step 8: Still on layer one edit the roof and fix the slices, also add a shadow on the back wall near the building, and change the design on the front of the house:
Spoiler for:

And your done! your house is finished, now just add items around it, make it look realistic, using mainly the second and third layers to make items overlay and such.

after all that we can make a house like this! : (in game screenshot)
Spoiler for:

Please if you liked it or hated it just leave me some feedback. Thanks and also if you liked it take a look around I have more tuts!

true, 2 more on the roof itself, one on the house front, and I think the fence is a wrong color at the end.

But it doesn't matter, since you're gonna fix it. ;8

The only issue I see is the circled crossing, wrong fence brightness, frontal wodden detail and..that's it. Nevertheless, it is still 100 times better than most of the buildings I've seen.

I have a few questions for you about housing.
Here is my sample below:
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi95.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl126%2Fx7Angels7Plagues%2Fmappinghelp.jpg&hash=65ec3504f3dc4be11e85ca1b7b25ab66f20bbd36)

I don't understand how you can make your house larger. If you add another tile then it will have a line going across your house. There are also no corner pieces for the bottom level and there is no bottom brick trimming. It makes it look like my house is only half completed. Also, the second floor looks like it is floating.

here, I made a quick house. Look at my map and look at yours and the door isnt a tileset. for door making please go to this link:

Okay, thank you. I just think it would look better if the houses were larger than 2 tiles...

Post by: :) on February 28, 2007, 11:52:48 PM
your welcome...two tiles? xD
Title: Re: House Exteriors
Post by: 7Angels7Plagues on March 01, 2007, 12:07:54 AM
Well like the door...that's two tiles large, so the house looks kind of small. I don't know which tile to use to make my house larger though, because if you do this:

(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi95.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl126%2Fx7Angels7Plagues%2Frrr.jpg&hash=fbedbc808268f7b6adf9e814232c281a28e0dc2b)

It makes that line go across the house. And i don't think any of the other tiles would work either.

Post by: :) on March 01, 2007, 12:24:08 AM
you are adding to make the base wrong..you can make it bigger w/o having the line
Title: Re: House Exteriors
Post by: 7Angels7Plagues on March 01, 2007, 12:48:24 AM
Which one do I use then? There aren't many options and there are only two tiles that follow the side trimming pattern per side. Can you show me an example?
Title: Re: House Exteriors
Post by: :) on March 01, 2007, 12:50:45 AM
hey, your right. sorry I thought there would be one. you could edit the tileset and add one.

Do the tilesets have to be a certain size or could I combine a few of them together to make one big one? Also, is there a way to use multiple tilesets on the same map? They seem pretty limited without being combined somehow.

How do I upload it into the game? I tried importing it, but when I go to make a map it's not in the list.
Title: Re: House Exteriors
Post by: :) on March 01, 2007, 01:28:10 AM
after you import go to databse and tileset. and make a new one, or click the old name for Castle town, and replace the tileset it uses.

I tried a few times making my own and it's like impossible to get the bricks to line up...I think mostly because I am really stupid so I can't do it properly haha.

a small shack? hmmm..I don't fully understand the request.

When I first heard it, I was thinking a smaller house using the RTP-roof. I was also thinking of the house overlapping the bigger one, but that's just retarded to do.

Well like in Astoniashia story next to some houses are Small Buldings next to the main building (the house) I was wondering if you could make one of those?
