What do you use to keep your computer safe?
I use:
AV: Bitdefender
FIrewall: Bitdefender
Browser: main: IE 6 (configured), Second: Opera
Trojens, spyware: adaware, just about every scanner from all other spyware software (bittorent download)
Special weapon: Being a smart computer user.
-
Anti Virus Software: NOD32
Firewall: NOD32 (I turned off Windoze's because it messes a lot with many other things)
Browser: Opera 9.02, I "deinstalled" (you actually can't remove it 100%-ly) IE to prevent security holes
Trojens, spyware: Spybot - Search and Destroy (keeps my comp safe and even asks me if any Registry changes should be applied when a program tries :))
Special weapon: Avoiding porn sites and software I don't know where they originated from, scanning the HDD frequently (1~2 times a month) and updating my virus/adware definitions frequently
-
AV: None (unless you count common sense)
Firewall: Router's hardware firewall.
Browser: Firefox & Flock
Trojens, spyware: See AV
Special weapon: Not being tarded.
-
Yes, most average computer users always seem to have more security flaws then the smart user.
-
True, but common sense is sometimes not enough. :( When I used common sense I got infected with maybe 2 viruses, while I am virus free now. Thing is, the AV blocks even stuff you couldn't yourself. You can never know where the next virus lurks. Half of the internet is infected :( (maybe a little bit exaggarated, but I think you get the point...).
-
Yep I get ya ;) . *sits back and waits for someone to post I USE NORTON*
-
Ok. :) *sits also back and waits for someone to post I USE NORTON to flame him and laugh at him ::)*
-
...*huh?* OH THAT'S MY CUE! *ahem*
I use Norton for av, firewall, etc. I use Internet Explorer for my browser. I'm pretty clean. ;D

What version of IE? and if you havn't already use the IE config guide I posted under this section of the fourm. (dam can't bag on arrowone!..NEXT)
-
Wrong, A1. You THINK you're clean. ::)
lol j/k
Norton: "Scanning your computer has revealed you are infected."
Me: "Hm... okay, well then just clean it."
Norton: "Please go to www.symantec.com and download a virus removal tool."
Me: "WTF?! WHY DON'T YOU JUST REMOVE IT WHEN YOU ARE ALREADY USING 50% OF MY CPU UND RAM?!"
-
LOL
Mine actually trashes the stuff though. THE PROBLEM is that it blocks all new programs from connecting to the internet, ESPECIALLY Firefox, no matter how many times I tell it other wise.
-
Believe me firefox....meh....RESOURCE HOG! Better off with IE properly configed, or opera which BTW uses have the computer resources that firefox does.
-
Thing is that IE is more secure than Firefox (dunno about Opera), but h4xx0rz attack IE users, while Firefox users nearly don't get attacked at all.
-
Thing is that IE is more secure than Firefox
Do you have any idea what you're talking about?
My firefox is using 66Mb of memory. Considering all the extensions I use, that I have 12 tabs open, and that I have my cache set to ultra hueg, that's pretty hot.
I didn't buy all my ram to not use it.
-
Say I have a...HP Pavillion a1230n, no extra upgrades or nothing, just a fancy new monitor. Would Firefox be a good idea? I usually have about 5 progs open at a time, two of which are usually paint, another two being browsers, and the last being a music player.

Sadly, yes. I wish it wasn't that way, but it is. =/ I've just read the other day an testing article about IE and Firefox. But don't worry, using Firefox is still better than using IE, because as good as all hackers target IE anyway. =D

My view: FIrefox is a great program right from the installation, great for lazy people, but if you have 5 min's to config IE you will have a safer environment then you can have with firefox.
-
What is better? Sitting in a nuke bunker where nukes are dropped on all the time or just sitting in the park and... well, that's it.

Firefox is always a good idea.

I used to use Norton, but I never had this problem. It just got rid of whatever it said was there, which was rarely ever anything.
THE PROBLEM is that it blocks all new programs from connecting to the internet, ESPECIALLY Firefox, no matter how many times I tell it other wise.
I never had that problem either.
AV: McAfee (Because it came on the computer)
FIrewall: Mcafee
Browser: Firefox, IE7
Trojens, spyware: Adaware, Spysweeper
Special weapon: I never show that on a first date ;)
-
My laptop has AVG free, Spybot S&D, I use Firefox, and I never get viruses because I do'nt download everything or go to risky sites like a computer idiot would. So the only time I've ever gotten a virus was when I was at Lehigh and someone put one through the network or email or something weird like that. But everybody got hit by that one, so it doesn't count.

norton anti virus....

norton anti virus....
*shame* *shame* haha, but really if you ever need to upgrade and don't mind paying/ torrenting or w/e, get Bitdefender, at least give it a try, if not I would have to say NOD. Try and get at least one of the two.
-
I hate norton... I keeps telling that things are wrong and it is pissing me off! I lost my tower of weed game because I told me that patch thing that would make XP work is not a registerd somthing. And it won't let me run 95 either... it says (https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi109.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn52%2Fdreamslayer7%2FHelp.jpg&hash=32468dd23642bdc533ce62dccab64335791cd019)
-
did you tru turning the AV off and running the patch, I have never seen an AV cause such a problem...maybe because I have used norton for only a few hours so I could'nt really know
-
If anyone is using anything different please go curl up in a corner and feel ashamed of yourself.
AntiVirus: AVG Free Edition 7.5
Firewall: Windows' built-in firewall is just fine.
Browser: Mozilla Firefox. So secure it makes the AV and FW redundant really...
AntiSpyware: AVG Anti-Spyware
I have never, EVER had any problems on any computer using this setup.
