"Does the walker chooses the path or the path choose the walker?"

Story
Since childhood, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who refuse to stay dead. But now her father, the Mage Abhorson, is missing, and Sabriel must cross into that world to find him. With Mogget, whose feline form hides a powerful, perhaps malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage, Sabriel travels deep into the Old Kingdom. There she confronts an evil that threatens much more than her life -- and comes face to face with her own hidden destiny. . .

Demo
Sabriel Demo v2.0 is now finished. This demo is really mostly just an update to the old demo, with changes here and there, updated graphics (including a new title screen painted by me with Photoshop), and some custom scripts are now used. I am trying to move away from the RTP a bit, but not too much. Also, a new map is playable, however it is not complete so you can only explore it. Very much thanks to VHS1983 for designing this new map for me, and expect it to be used to its full potential in a later demo ^_^

It would be nice if anyone who plays this demo can give me feedback about it. Tell me what you think!

Also, if you find any typos or bugs tell me (I have fixed all that I've found, but there could be a few more out there).

The file is about 9.30MB

Here's the link:

Note: You will have to install the fonts for this game. To do so, open the folder I included (Sabriel Fonts) and drag the fonts in there into the folder C:/WINDOWS/Fonts.

Update: Some minor problems have now been fixed :P

It's good. Good mapping, good grammar, interesting little quest and a compelling intro. I'll play the full version when it comes out.

based on this review, I take it the you made it through the whole demo without errors :D

That makes me very happy!

There are alot of sidequests and minigames in Wyverley College, some are hidden, so everyone should look for them. All together I think there are about 8. Some are very simple, such as bringing an item to someone, and others are complex and will take time. I hope you enjoy them!

I just bought the book today (I previously had it from a library...and it was very late when I returned it), so I can now progress the story a bit. It is hard work adapting a novel, so if the game is finished, it will be pretty long, and a new demo probably won't show up TOO soon, unless it is an upgrade to this one.

Well I hope you all enjoy Sabriel so far, and don't forget about i! ;D

the only thing that bothers me, is that in the second screenshot the staircases go up into nothing, and dont seem to be attached to anything anyways.

Yeah, but its like that in alot of RPGs, like pokemon. If a staircase that leads to another floor is in the middle of a room, it just goes up into nothingness. But when you walk up it, you are taken to the next floor. There really isn't any other way to do it with a top-down, 2D RPG.

The presentation is marvellous, with the color tones and the pretty fogs mixing together masterfully, and the English is just like out a Garth Nix novel. This is quite close to a masterpiece. Well done; I'll be looking forward to the next edition.

Wow thanks!

I guess I just have a natural skill with this sort of thing, since this is my very first try!

I also had to figure out how to do everything with RMXP on my own, and haven't had any outside help (yet).

yes, but you see, they can get away with it for two reasons-
-it is a slightly different perspective
-RMXP is alot more detailed, and your staircase is longer. Also, The ones in pokemon usually go to the side, not up and down.

EDIT: great game. Even if you didn't have to exactly come up witht the storyline, the miniquests are awsome and the cutscenes were good also.

Thanks ^_^ I chose to make a game of a book firt because
A. it doesn't seem like many people are making such adaptations,

B. I really like this book, thought it would make a good RPG project, and wanted to do something with it, and

C. That way I wouldn't HAVE to come up with the story all by myself for my first try. If I'm going to write my own story for a game, I don't want to end up comming up with the whole thing as I go. The stories I have thought of would take more knowledge and experience with RMXP, and I'm not sure if they would translate well into RPGs anyways :/ Also, I wouldn't an to start a game and then find out I can't do what I want to do....so adapting a pre-existing story lets me know basically what I'll need to make it in advance...which has proven challenging, but I think it will be possible!

Go for it Snithe! I've been waiting a long time for someone to make Sabriel/Lirael/Abhorsen. I got RPG Maker XP purely to do just that, at one point I started working on Lirael, but I never finished it... Anyways, I can see you are an excellent game maker and are much more suited to making Sabriel than myself. I love what you're doing here, and I look forward to seeing the finished work. GOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGO! Work! You know you want to! C'mon c'mon c'mon c'mon!

Hats off to Garth Nix as well, the books are amazing!

@Nephytys: Thanks for the encouragment ^_^ Its good to find that people really appreciate what I'm doing. The main reason I decided to do this was because my dream is to be a movie director someday, and well, I would really like to make films of these books :/ I think they would translate well into film, and I decided making a game of it would sort of be a good starter. This is my first crack at RMXP; I initially tried to make Sabriel with the old RPG Maker for Playstation...but it didn't work out well >.<
Since I made this demo I haven't done too much more with it, patially because I wanted to get more feedback, and I haven't found much time with school and all. However, there's one week of school left for me, so I will probably be able to put some good work in over the summer :P

@qwertyuiopboy: Oh sorry, I guess I didn't tell you that you have to install the fonts :/ Open up C:\WINDOWS\Fonts and then just copy my fonts from the folder I included and paste them in there. That should do the trick :P

this looks good...

the only thing ( I havent DLed this yet), judging by the screen shots, the border guards you used are the RTP guards, who in this case should be more modern. (actually around WWI looking). Besides that, looks good, but if you REALLY wanted to detail the bells, you could go in and edit the icons based on the descriptions of the bells, besides just size.

Rep: +0/-0Level 88
Thanks. But if you didn't notice, I used the RTP gaurds for the "Crossing Point Scouts" (who were described as wearing armor over their uniforms) and a WWI soldier sprite that I made myself for the regular soldiers :p I mixed them together to seperate who was what kind of soldier and to add more variety.

But anyways, I hope you like the demo  ;)

Judging by the screenshots and the topic (which could have been presented better), I expected to see a n00b project full of bugs.

I was pleasantly surprised. The dialogue felt natural, and the cutscenes never felt rushed.

Now, on to the criticism.

While mapping in some areas was nice, I felt that it wasn't consistent, the river of death for example, didn't show very nice mapping, it felt wide open. I expected dead bodies, withered trees, etc. In addition, the college indoors felt too open. I understand it was supposed to be big, but I thought space wasn't used well.

I also urge you to use an advanced message system. The name and face box would make your game look much better.

Keep up the good work, and I hope to see an update soon.

Thanks ^_^ I'm glad you liked it. Cutscenes are one of my main focuses with this game, since obviously, being based off of a book, it is very story oriented.

Mapping is the part that I'm still building my skill the most in, thats why I've hd some external help with it. The river of death is sort of a hard concept to create with RMXP, since it would basically be an endless empty plain of water if I made it as described in the book....so I tried to make it more interesting in a top-down view RPG, while still getting the idea of the book. There are whithered trees, but dead bodies would be out of place...since dead poeple are alive in the river of death :/
As for the college, I made it open on purpose because of an even that will happen there near the end ;) But thanks for your thoughts on it.

Quote

I probably will incorperate something of the sort eventually, but for now I'm avoiding using too many custom scripts until I'm more cmfortable with RMXP overall.
